A colde windy day. The coldest night of the winter. Henry was sick this morning fainted and fell but is much better tonight. Carrie Smith and her children stayed here last night. Went home this evening. I do hope they got home ok. Hugh & Hildes [?] come a little while today. Ben & Norman Booker went to see Les Harvey [?] this evening. Mr. Booker & the children staid here whil they were gone. Jim has not come back yet. I wish I could see all the children. Henry is sleeping down stairs to night.
A clear colde day the coldest that has bin this winter. Ben has bin at home all day. We did not eat but twice today. We cooked rabbits for dinner. Today is Carries birth day. Jim come home tonight. Mr Bob Starkey brought him from Chatham. He brought a pig with him. He brought several little presents for us all. A thermos bottle for me & candy and a doll for the children. Ben has bin fixin up the fence. The red cow has bin getting in the corn. The children are so glad that Jim is here.
A cloudy colde day. Jim & Ben shucked some corn and fed the cows the stalks. We got dinner at twelve oclock today. The children went to school was very late comeing home. Mabel stuck a stick in Franklins eye. I am afraid it is hurt bad. Hope it may be a bout well in the morning. Josie and I have sewed a little today. I wrote Lizzie Benett this morning. I am uneasy a bout Lonnie. I had a note from Carrie today. I am glad that they got home ok. I feel like I would like to see all of the children but I may never see them all a gain. No one knows what will be.
A cold morning and cloud. Warmer this evening. Jim & Ben ground axes and commenced to fix to burn plant land. The children went to school. Josie and got dinner and sewed a little. Hattie and Elie Gilbert washed here. Franklins eye has not hurt him much today. I have read a book thru tonight. Title The Playmates.
A cloudy day. Jim & Ben worked on their plant beds. Elick Gibbon got in some wood for us today. Josie got dinner. She cooked turnip salit. It certainly was good. The children went to school. I went to Kate Harveys. I spent a pleasant day. Kate was ironing. Virginia was at home most of the time. Dr. Owen & Clack Hubbard went hunting. Johnson & Jim Thomson was hunting. I will be glad when they cant hunt birds any more. 10 oclock at night.
A good day. Ben & Jim cut some wood in the woods today. The children went to school today. Josie ironed. I got dinner. This evening Josie went to see Evelyn Hutcherson. Come by Mr Bookers. Their baby is complaining. I got a letter from Alma saying that Lonnie is very sick yet. I do hope that he may get well. Oh how I miss Marvins family. I want to see them so bad. I know that I cant go as we all have to work.
A good day. Ben & Jim worked on their plant bed. They went to Steven Davis for guano. Ben has gone to the lodeg tonight with Norman Booker. Josie has gone up there to stay until bed time. Josie and I washed some today. Henry made the fire and diped some water. He shucked a little corn and gave the cows a few stalks. We have bin reading tonight.
A rainy bad day very colde. We all have bin at home all day. Had a lonesome day. That is I have bin lonely. I miss Carrie and family so much. We crowed in three meals. I have wrote to Carrie to night. That is next thing to seeing her. I would be glad to see all the children and grand children and great grand children. I hope to see them some time a gain. Some of dont come to see me. I excuse them. They dont know or care.
A beautiful day. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco this morning and worked on their plant bed this evening. Josie got dinner. I sewed a little this evening. I went to Johnson Reynols. Found Mollie by her self. Had pleasant evening. She walked with me half way home. Johnson was stripping tobacco. I did not see him. Mr Norman Booker got him a horse on trial. He was plowing this evening. Mr Mayhew gave a party tonight. Ben & Josie went to stay a while. Also Jamie Gravely is giving a party. Several cars has passed.
A good day. Jim stayed here and worked on a plant bed & shucked some corn. Josie got dinner and kept Mabel. Ben and I went to see Lonnie Bennett. He is very sick yet but better than he was a while back. I hope he may get well a gain. Ben and I come by Gretna and went to Marvin Smiths a while. I was glad to see them. Did not see Marvin. He was burning a plant bed. The children went to school. Franklin went today.
A bad morning. Rain and a little snow. Tonight a colde wind is blowing. Ben & Jim stripped some tobacco this morning and sawed some wood this evening. Josie ironed some this morning. She got dinner & washed the dishes. I ironed some. Henry & Edna went to school. It was a bad day for them. Ben broke a peice of the light enjoine today. We have the lamps to night for lights. We miss the lights so much. Cordie Blair is sick. I hope she may soon be well a gain. 9 oclock
A colde day. Very disa greeable day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco. The children went to school. Josie sewed some. I got dinner. We had chicken for dinner. The last of Jims game chickens. I went to George Blairs. Cordie is sick. She was some better than she has bin. I hope she may get well soon. Josie wrote to Carrie tonight. I am glad that she did. I miss Carrie so much I cant hardly stay at home.
A colde day. Ben & Jim burnt and sowed a plant bed. Henry & Edna went to school. Josie mended some stockings. I got dinner. I churned this morning. We heard over the phone that Cordie Blair is no better. We have to stay at home now that the weather is bad that I dont know any thing to write. Little Mabel has bin sick today. I hope she may be well in the morning. Ena let the cows out of the stalls tonight for me.
A clear colde day. Jim & Ben and Henry shucked some corn & gave the stalks to the cows. Then cut wood. Kate Harvey come a while today. I was glad that she came. Josie got dinner. I ironed some. Mabel has been sick alday. I am very sorry for her and hope she may soon be well. Ben has gone to the store tonight for oranges for her. I have not heard from the sick grandchildre today. I hope they may soon be well. Jim cut his finger right bad today.
A good day. We all staid at home today. Mabel is sick yet. We heard from Lonnie and Cordie today they are getting on very well at this time. We had fried chicken and ice cream for dinner.
We had a surprise this evening. Marvin & Carrie and four of the children and John Brumfield come. We all was so glad to see them.
I am so sorrie that Mabel is sick and we don't know what to do for her.

A bad day. Snowed all day. Not very cold. Mabel is sick. I am so sorrie for her & her mother.
Jim & Ben stripped tobacco. Mr Norman Booker helped them. I killed a chicken & dressed it and got dinner. Helped to holde Mabel some. Josie done what she could. She had to rock Mabel most of the time. Henry & Edna went to school as bad as it was. I have bin mending overalls tonight.
I sympathize with all the poor and hard up people and the sick and that is the most of them.

Ben & Jim stripped some tobacco. Booker helped them. Ben went to the store. Bought some coffee. Caught a rabbit. The children went to school. A pedler come here today selling glassed. I have done most of the work today. Poor little Mable is sick and crying right now. I am so sorry for her & Ben & Josie two. The peice for Henrys gun come today. He is so glad that it fits right.
I do hope that the sick grand children will all be well soon.

Annie and Brtha Doss come here this evening. They brought the lasts[?] home. Maybel is sick. Don't seem to get better fast. I do hope she may get well soon. The children are haveing a big time to night. I am so sleepy tha I can hardly write.
A rainy day. The boys stripped tobacco. The children went to school. They were late at school. Mabel is better today. I am so glad Josie and I do a little cookin and [Nanes?] Mabel is so cross.
I have not bin anywher or heard any thing new so I have not got anything to write. The weather is bad and soon the roads will be bad so that people can't run a car. Henry & Edna are studying their lessons yet.

A cloudy day & some rain. Raining tonight. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco. The children went to school.Ednacome home with the head ache. I hope she will be well in the morning. Mabel has as well as we could expect today. I have mended some thing today. Josie sewed on her quilt what Mabel would let her. Josie got two letters today. One from Carrie one from Ella. All of their people were well. We heard today that Miss Anna Wilborn died this morning. Will be buried tomorrow at Strait Stone.
A bad day. Some rain and plenty of mud. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all the morning. This evening Ben & Josie went to Strait Stone to Miss Anna Wilborns burial. Josie got dinner. I washed the dishes and churned while they were gone. Edna has been sick all day. I hope she may be better by morning. Maybel is better. There is right much sickness a bout. Ben has gone to the lodge tonight. Josie made a stew for dinner & made potatoe pudding.
A good day. Lee Brumfield and Hugh and Stuart Owen was here at dinner today. Lee & Jim went to Steven Davis s for to get Lees dog Hugh went home sick. Henry & Edna is sick. I am very sorrie for them all and hope they may all be better by morning. Mrs Kent and Eula Mayhew come a while this evening and Mrs Booker. None of them did not stay long. I am so troubled a bout the children. But there is not any thing that I can do to help them.
A cloudy day. No rain yet. Jim and Ben shucked some corn and fed the cows the stalks. Then hauled some wood. Josie made some bats for her quilt. I [ put up?] some hens. Expect to kill them tomorrow. This evening I went to Johnson Reynolds. Found them well. [Johnson] was stripping tobacco. The children here are better of their sore mouths. I do hope that they very soon be well. I am so sorry for them all that are sick. I want to hear from Carrie & [family] so bad.
A colde day. Jim & Ben hauled some wood. Kate Harvey come and eat dinner with us. This evening dressed some fowls. Ben killed them. Kate caught them for him. Then Josie and Kate and I picked them tonight. Ben and Jim packed them in a barrel. Ready to send off. Josie and I made some bats and set by the fire all we could. The children is still improveing.
A very colde morning. The coldest of the winter so far. Ben warmed up his car and got it cranked and carried the barrel of fowls to the island. He had a rough trip. I am very glad that it has bin made. They cut some this evening. It was so colde that no one could do much. Hattie Gilbent washed here today
Josie and I got dinner. We had caned pork for dinner. it was fine Henry went to school We had a letter from Carrie today. I was glad. I miss her so much. Willie Mayhew is here tonight
A very colde day. The men did not work much. They shucked a shock of corn and fed the stalks to the cows. Henry went to school. Edna is complainy and have not bin to school this week. Hugh Brumfield has bin sick all of this week. Josie went to Mr Bookers a little while this evening. The weather is so bad that that no one can do much but stay by the fire and then cant keep warm. I think now that if live to see warm weather I will be so glad.
A very bad day it was snowing this morning when we got up and it is snowing yet 8 o clock at night. It is drifted in places so that any one cant hardly go through it. Jim has fed the chicken & turkeys and cows. Ben milked and has brought the water. Josie got dinner. She cooked black eye peas and had a stew. I made some bats and sewed on my quilt some. Our mail carrier did no come today. We mis the mail. There was no school today.
A snowy morning. There is the most snow on the land that is ever on it in this part of Va. The wind is not as colde as it is some times. Ben made some paths. He worked two horses to a drag. Jim shoveled a lot of snow from the stables and hen houses. He feeds the chickens and hogs. Ben milked for me yesterday and today. Josie got dinner & ironed today. Mr Mayhew come by and stayed some time playing games with Ben & the children. The mail did not come yesterday or today. We mis it so much.
A cloudy day most of the time. Snow melted some all day. We all staid at Home all day except Ben. He went to Mr Bookers a little while. Johnson Reynols come this morning and staid a while. I got dinner except the bread Josie made that. I killed and cooked a chicken and baked a molasses pudding. Josie washed the dishes after Dinner. I wrote Carrie a letter to day. Oh how I miss them. I would like so much to know how all of my children are getting on in this bad spell but cant know.
A clear colde day. The sun set this evening was beautifu.
Jim & Ben stripped tobacco all day. Booker helped them this evening. Henry went to school. Josie sewed. Made Franklin a blous & Mabel a waist. Virginia & Doris come down here. The rode horse back. The mail carrier was horse back today. Mr Mills drug paths a gain today. I hope the roads will soon be so any one can travil them. Jim heard from the fowls toda they solds very well. Hugh Brumfield was at school a gain today
I am so glad that the children all are a bout well a gain.
A colde clean day. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco. Mr Booker helped them. Josie got dinner I washed dishes after dinner & churned. Josie & I sewed on quilts this evening. Henry went to school. He brought some records home for the phonagraf. I went in and heard them played to night. I enjoyed them. Hugh B got sick at school and had to go home. I am uneasy a bout him. But hope he may get well soon. Thelbert Edmons brought our mail this evening. I will be glad when we can get it regular a gain. I got a letter from Bonee Reynols.
A cloudy day. Rain tonight. Ben finished stripping tobacco. Mr Booker helped them strip. Marvin Smith and Mr Shelton come here today. Shelton come to look at cow. Did not like her. Bought one from Kate Harvey. I am glad that he did. I think it is good for her. I was very much disapointed that they would not stay for dinner. Josie & I had fixed for them as good as we could under the circum stances. Henry went toschool. Josie & I sewed on quilts this evening. The weather is awful bad so that we have to sit by the fire most of the time.
A cloudy morning. Clear in the evening. Jim hung up the meat. Ben & Jim went to Renon in the morning & Ben went a gain in the evening. Henry went to school. Josie got dinner and washed the dishes. After dinner I mended on overalls all day and then did not get done. Ben saw John & Edwin Brumfield on their way to Johnson Reynols. They were going to do some work for Mollie. I got a letter from Carrie to day. I am always glad to hear from them. Ben milked for me this morning. I have not done any thing out to day.
A good day. Very mudy and bad getting a bout. I have not bin out but little today. Ben milked for me. Josie done most every thing else. I churned and mended on overalls all day.
Ben & Jim made two crates for calfs [crossed out] calves that they intend to ship. We got the mail OK today. Josie got a package that she had ordered.
We cant go any wher and no one comes so we don't hear any news. Josie wrote to Carrie today. I think a bout them most of the time.
A good day but it is raining tonight. Jim & Ben & Henry cut a little today. Jim commenced to smoke the meat today. Ben put a heater in his room. Mr Mayhew was here tonight. Ben & the children played games with him until ten oclock or near that. I got dinner today. Edna washed the dishes this morning & at dinner. Josie starched & ironed some. Today I mended some things. Ben milked for me this morning. There is so much mud that I cant get a round much.
A good day. Very muddy. Jim and Ben went to the island this morning. They carried two calves. They got home a bout one oclock. Jim went to Renan this evening. Ben cut some wood. Josie made Pat a pair of pants and a blouse. I good dinner & and mended a rug. Henry & Edna went to school. The first time that Edna had bin in two weeks. Hugh Brumfield went to school today. Heard today that Cordie was sick a gain. I am very sorry for her and hope she may get well soon. Oh how I want to see Carrie & and her family.
A good day. The men folks did not do any thing but feed & get wood until twelve oclock. Ben & Josie went to Mr Jim Powers to see Mrs. [Carr ?]. They went horse back. Ben rode Tomp & Josie rode Jake. They got home a bout 8 oclock at night. The children was all up playing. Josie got dinner. I churned. I made Edna a pair of gloves this morning. This evening I mended some stockings. We heard from the calves to day. They Solde very well. I milked tonight. Plenty of mud now.
A bad day. Snowed some. Ben & Jim did not work any this morning. This evening Ben & Jim went to Gretna in the car. They got stalled on the hill between here and the barn. Made the ballance of the way OK. Ben got home before dark. Josie had a letter from Carrie today. We are so glad to hear from them. We heard to day that Smith the Banker had left Gretna. We are very sorrie for that. Josie milked to night. I got supper. The children & Ben are playing carrum. I think they know their lessons. Mabel is up yet.
A cloudy day. No rain or snow. We have done as near nothing as we could. Ben & Josie milked morning & night. Ben went to Mags and Kates this evening. Found them well. The children got letters from Reese & Paul today. We are always glad to hear from any of them. Josie and I sent several valintines cards to relatives I miss Jim so much. Hope he is at home OK. Ben put shoes on Mr Bookers horse this morning. Henry & Edna went to school. The roads are so mudy that you cant hardly travil. Josie got a fall this evening.
A very warm day for February. The snow is about all gone. Ben & Henry shucked some corne and fed the stalks. This evening they sawed some wood in the woods. Josie killed and dress a chicken & baked a cake. We boiled some meat and stewed fruit for dinner. I washed a few garments & a lot of olde stockings. Ben & Josie milked night and morning. The children played games tonigh. Ben has gone to Strait Stone to meet at the lodge. He went horse back. The mud is so bad.
A cloudy day. Rained a little. We all stayed at home but Henry. He went to Dr Owens and spent the day with Stewart. Ben went with Lee Brumfield to Steven Davis s late this evening to get his dog. They come home a bout dark. Josie and I baked breat & made coffee for supper. Today has bin one lonesome dreary day. The roads are so bad that no one cant get a bout much. Ben & Josie milked this morning & Josie milked by her self to night. I wish I could see Carrie & the children once more.
A cloudy day. Rain tonight & hail. Jim & Ben cut in the woods today. Josie got dinner. I got breakfast & churned and washed dishes. Marvin come today. He eat dinner with us. He got his meat from Bookers and lard from here. I am glad for him that it is at home. He said that his folks was bad off with colds. I do hope that they may soon be well. I got a letter from Julia Fergerson today. Was glad to hear from her. Henry & Edna went to school. Franklin got a valentine.
A very bad day. It has rained nearly all day. The trees are covered in ice and lots of limbs has broke off. The weeping willow at the spring fell over this evening. The men could not work out at anything. Ben mended up some chairs. Jim mended his shoes this evening. He is very much complaining tonight. I am uneasy that he is going to be sick. I am uneasy a bout them all. The weather is so bad. I do hope that God will keep them well and able to stand up under it.
Snowed again last night and have not thawed but very little allday. Today it is a very bad time. Ben & Josie milked today. I am not going out much. We dressed two chickens today and cooked one. Henry went to school the weather was two bad for Edna. Franklin & Mabel has bad colds. I think Jim feels better than he did yesterday. I know I hope he does. I am sorry for myself and every boddy esle [crossed out] else. I want to hear from all of my children and grand children. Do hope that the weather will get good.
A colde day. Partly cloudy. The ice did not melt but very little to day. Ben & Jim sawed up the weeping willow. Today the weather is so bad that they cant do much. Ben made some foot stools. Walker Haris [(Col)?coloured man] brought the chairs that he had to put bottoms in and a basket good but rough. Henry went to school. Franklin was croupy last night. I think he is better though. I had a letter from Carrie today. They are all a bout but not well.
A cloudy day most of the day and some warmer and so much mud that roads is all most impasable. Miss Wille Wooding come and eat dinner with us. Josie got dinner and it was a good one. Jim & Ben went to Renan. They couldnt get a box that would do for a box to pack meat. Oh all of the children has bad colds and Edna is sick. Bin sick all day. I am not well but I hope I may be better by morning. I have bin miserable this evening. So much to do and I am not able to help much. I would like to help some. I do so much hope that the children may be better in the morning.
A cloudy day. We all stayed at home. Jim was lookin up plank for a box to put his met in. The children has bin up to day. All of them has bad colds. I have bin complaining all day. I have cooked what we eat today & churned.

A cloudy day. Ben & Jim trimmed up some apple trees. Mollie Reynols come today. I was glad to see her. I had a letter from Carrie. Was glad to hear from her & them all. I am not well and Mabel is crying and going on so that I am tempted to go off some where. Josie has whipped her more than she ever did in her life. Gess she needs it but I can hardly stand it. Edna & Franklin has bin up all day today. I do hope that times will get better here soon. If they dont I would go some where if I knowed where to go.
A cloudy day but no rain. Ben & Jim helped Johnson on the phone line. They eat with Johnson. Josie got dinner here. Edna ironed a little. I have set by the fire all day. I have a bad cold. Mrs Hutcherson & Denia Blair come this evening. The come on a buggy. I was glad that they come. I had bin wanting to see some of our folks so long.
Today 57 years ago I was married. Henry went to school. Tonight he has gone to Norman Booker. Two of Less Bookers children is there.
A good day. The best that has bin this year. Ben & Jim worked on the phone line a gain today. Henry and Edna went to school. Josie got dinner. I have helped a round some today. Hattie & Elic washed here today. George Blair Jr. come here this morning for his mothers over shoes. Carrie & her children except Paul come a few minutes We were glad to see them. The baby has fattened up and is so pretty. I miss them more than i can tell. I do hope that the roads may get good soon. The boys have some tobacco to market yet.
A warm cloudy windy day. Jim Helped on the phone line. Ben shucked some corn & worked to get the wire from Owens garden. Josie washed some. Did not hang out her clothe. I ironed some. Churned and fixed up the butter. Henry & Edna went to school. A car passed here today. The first one in some time.

A good day. Jim worked on the orchard. Ben Helped work on the phone line. Henry & Edna went to school. Josie got dinner. Kate Harvey come and eat dinner with us. We was glad to see her. Franklin & Mabel is not well. I would be so glad for them to get well a gain

A good day. Jim went to Chatham to see his folks. Ben trimed on the orchard. Helped Norman Booker cut some logs for sills. Otto Blair and Sollie come to Bookers this evening. Josie went to Normans and staid until bed time. Franklin is sick a gain today. Mabel said a wake until ten oclock tonight. Ben and Josie got home at eleven. I am writing in Bens room tonight. I hope they all may feel better soon.

Josie bathed the children & dressed them. They have worried us to [death] with the fuss they keep up. I have thought of Carrie & the children so often. I wish I could be with them a while. Mabel dont want to go to sleep and is crying. Oh I feel like I will be so glad when the weather is better.
A good day. Ben loaded on his & Jims tobacco this morning, Mr John Tucker carried it to Danville. The roads is very rough. Norman Booker helped Ben handle his tobacco.

Jim & Nellie come this evening. I was glad that they did. Oscar Brumfield brought them from Gretna. We miss Ben tonight. It is the first time he has been a way in a long time.
A cloudy day. Ben was in Danville. Solde the last tobacco that they had. Did not get much for it. Ben got home OK a little after dark. Jim shucked some corn and fed the stalks to the cows. Marvin come and eat dinner with us. I was so glad to see him. Josie ironed some this morning and Nell ironed some this evening. Henry is reading. He sleeps in my room now that Nellie is home. Anna Callans (col)[coloured] come here and wanted to rent a house. I am sorry for her but dont want her here.
A bad day. Hailed & snowed and rained all day. Hailing now 8 oclock at night. The men folks fed the stock and made fires. Ben & Josie milked. I churned and got dinner. We had turnip salit & poached eggs. Nellie & Jim brought the sallit from Chatham. We were very glad of it. Henry & Edna went to school. Mabel has cried a lot all the morning. Was better all the evening. Nellie was complaining all evening. Hope she will soon be teethed.
A very bad day. The ground was covered with snow & ice and it rained most of the morning. Ben & Jim could not work at any thing much. Jim kept a good fire at the dining room. Ben went to Renan late this evening. He went horse back. He carried Kate Harvey some quilting frames. Henry went to school. I cooked the break fast & churned and killed a chicken and d[r]essed it. Josie cooked the dinner and made ice cream. We all did enjoy it. Josie got a letter from Carrie. I got one from Effie Brumfield and three of their pictures.
A cloudy day most of the day. Some snow on the ground yet. Jim & Ben sawed some wood in the woods. Jim & Nellie and Josie caught some chickens to night. Ben went to Renan after a crate he wanted. He walked and toated it home.
Josie got dinner. She is not well and I see trouble a bout her. I am not doing much and it hurts me for her to have so much to do. Nellie wants to go home in the morning. I am afraid it will be raining. Hope not. The roads is so bad that they will have to go on a waggon if they go.
A rainy morning. Rained most of the night. The trees was covered in ice this morning. Not heavy enough to brake them. Josie baked a cake for Nellie. Nellie dressed a chicken to take home with her. I let her have some butter. They borrowed Norman Bookers buggy and started home a bout two oclock in the evening. It has not rained since they left. I do hope that they got to Gretna in time to take the train. At this time the roads is very bad. None of feel good and the wether is depressing on a well person. We should be thankful of the good that we have.
A good day. I got breakfast and washed the dishes & churned. Ben & Josie milked the cows Josie made ice cream. Henry helped her. Then she baked a cake. It was very nice. Ben went to Role Hubbards. Did not get home until late. Found them all well. This evening Grace Brumfield and Lottie Kellie & Ruth Booker they had four little children with them. Hugh Brumfield come and played with Henry. Josie milked tonight & fed everything.
A beautiful day. Ben went to Gretna. Carried some eggs & chicken and butter. Bought ship stuff & brand for the cows. Sugar & molasses for the folks. Jim come home from Chatham. He brought sallit. We are glad to get it. Mrs Car come today. We was glad to see her. I went to George Blairs. Dena and I worked on her quilt. It will be very pretty when she finishes it. Denia and Cordie were coming to see us if I had not went there. Hope they will come soon. Denia & Isla had washed this morning.
A rainy morning. Clear tonight and the wind blowing and colde. Jim & Ben did not do any work this morning. This evening they cut some. Josie & I got dinner. We had turnip greens & potatoe sallid. Henry and Edna went to school.
Mrs Booker come a few minutes this evening. She swapped some eggs to set. Mrs Car churned for me this morning. Mabel is not sleepy to night but I am.
A good day. Ben & Josie started to the hospitle at Charlottsville. I am distressed about Josie. Hope she may come back improved. J Jim split wood in the woods and got wood and brought it in for us to burn. The children went to school. Mollie Reynols come a few minutes this evening. I milked this morning & to night. The first time in several weeks. The cow kicked at me but did not hurt me much. Max can come tonight to see his mother. Jim Doss carried Marvin Smith a load of straw. I wish I could see all of Marvins folks and him two.
A cloudy day. Rain tonight. Max Car went from here this morning. Jim went to Lee Brumfields to a cutting match. Kate Harvey come to see us this morning. She eat dinner with us. Ben & Josie come home today from Charlottsvill. We was glad to have them back. Josie is feeling bad I know. Henry & Edna went to school. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. Most of the clothes was dry enough to take in. Oh how I wish I could See Carries folks. It rains rains rains.
A rainy day. Rained all night last night and it is raining to night. They teacher intended to have a box party at the school houes tonight but I guess there wont be many there. I am sorry that the weather is so bad. Jim & Ben has not done much today. Henry & Edna went to school. Josie got dinner. We had caned sausage & eggs and tomatoes. I washed dishes after dinner and fixed the butter. Have not done much today except dodge around and set by the fire. Ben milked Lady tonight. Josie milked Red.
Clear most of the day. Cool & windy. Ben & Jim cut and sawed up the wood that the ice broke and cleaned up the spring yard. The nicest it has bin in along time. I am glad that they did it. Josie has tried to see what she could do today. She helped to milk then cut salit for dinner. Went to the spring & washed it. Killed a chicken and dressed it. Finished dinner then baked a cake. Washed Mabel & Franklin and dressed them. Helped milk tonight and got up the eggs. Washed the dishes after supper. I kept busy but did not do much of any thing.
A good day. We all staid at home all day. Josie & I got dinner. Mrs Car washed dishes. I would of liked to go some where but could not well go.
I have felt bad & lonesome all day and no prospect of any thing better.
A good day. Ben & Jim put on the plantbed canvas today. Lee & Oscar come here today to see a bout buying some feed. They eat dinner with us. Miss Willie Wooding come this evening & Ila & Cordie Blair and Nettie Hendricks and her little baby. The baby is a beauty. I think Josie made a bed quilt lineing and put a quilt in the frames today and we quilted more than half of it. Cordie & Isla & Miss Willie all quilted some. Edna has bin sick today. She could not go to school.
A good day. Rained a little and cleared off. Jim & Ben went to Renan and cut wood for Irvin Harvey until twelve oclock. They come home for dinner. They worked on the garden fence this evening. We quilted one of Josies quilts and commenced on another one.
Mrs. Norman Booker come and helped us quilt this evening.
Kate Harvey & Carrie Smith come a little while. Carrie had four of the children with her. I was so glad to see them. Would be glad to see Marvin & Paul & Roy. Hope to see all of them soon. Mrs Car has bin sick all the evening hope she will get well soon.

Jim found five little pigs yesterday morning. We are very glad of them & hope to rais them.
A good day. Jim & Ben shucked some corn this morning & fed the stalks to the cows then worked on the garden. Josie cut a nice mees of turnip salit. I got dinner. Mrs Car was up today. Mollie Reynols was here today a little while. She helped us quilt some. We finished the quilt tonight. That is three that we have quilted this week. Irvin Harvey is here tonight he brought us some salit. We are mighty glad to get it. Nine oclock and bed time I think.
A good day. Ben & Jim worked on the garden fence all the morning. This evening they helped cut wood at Mag Brumfields. They went on the car. I went with them. I went to Kates and then we went to Mags. I saw Doris & Virginia & Hellen. They all looked very nice. I got dinner at home. We had turnip salit. We have had good neighbors to send us salid. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. Josie baked a cake today as nice as one could wish. Mag had a very nice dinner today. I eat some with her this evening.
A colde cloudy day. Ben worked on the garden. Jim helped Johnson on his plant bed until twelve. He come home to dinner. This evening Ben went to Gretna. Jim and I went with him. Jim went to Chatham. I done some shopping. Ben bought some flour. We got home about night. Henry and Professer Gambol went to the Sulpher Strings. Hugh come here. Henry & Hugh went down the branch fishing. Did not catch any thing. Miss Janie Gravely come to see Josie this evening. We were very glad that she come. I did want to go and see Carrie this evening.
A rainy day. We all staid at home. I got dinner. Cooked meat & turnip greens and a chicken & stewed prunes. Josie had a cake baked. Josie is feeling mighty bad today. I said we all staid at home. I forgot Henry went home with Hugh Brumfield. Jim did not come home. Wilson Starkey got stuck in the mud near the house. Ben went & helped him get out. I wrote two letters today. One to Carrie & one to Julia Fergerson. Wish I could see them.
A cloudy morning. Colde and windy tonight. Ben put the wire a round the flower garden. Josie and I hope to enjoy planting things in the garden. I put a quilt together and Josie put one together and made a lineing. Josie got dinner. Mrs Car washed dishes and churned. We put a quilt in the frames. All of us quilted a square. Ben quilted a few lines. Jim come home this evening. Nellie went to see Carrie today. I am glad that she did. I want to see her so bad but I cant go. Josie has bin pent today. Henry & Edna went to school today.

We quilted a while this morning. I got dinner. We all quilted this evening. I think most of the folks have gone to bed so that they can get warm. Henry & Edna went to scool (crossed out) school. Edna got a letter from Virginia wood (crossed out) Wooding today.

Hattie & Elie washed to day. I tried to bring a chunk of fire from the parlor to my room and droped it. Burnt the drugget & the floor. I am sorry but it cant be helped now. I will not try such a thing a gain soon if ever.
A clear cool day. Ben & Jim firmed up the garden this morning. Ben hauled wood this evening. Jim split wood in the woods. Clay Harvey come here a bout [day?] this morning on his way to Lynchburg. He got some gas from Ben. His had gave out. Josie ironed some and got dinner. Mrs Car had the sick headache. I put a quilt in the frames all by my self. We all quilted on it this evening. Mollie Reynolds come and helped us. I was glad that she come. Christenia come and went with her home.

She had caned sausage made a dewberry pie had caned tomatoes boiled 14 egg made bread and coffee. Kate Harvey come & Carrie and all children. I was glad to see all of them. Kate & I worked button holes. Kate brought some sallit.
A good day. Ben fixed the gate to the flower garden. We were glad to have it made so we could go in the garden. Jim moved his pig to the pasture today. Mrs Car went home this evening. Ben & Josie and all the children went. They did not go in at Mr Powers. Most all of the Powers people are sick. I heard a gun shot tonight. We heard that a mad dog was killed. S[h]ot near Lee Brumfields.
There has bin more passing a bout today than any Sun[day] since Xmas. Looks like rain now.

I got a snack for dinner and quilted a little. Then went to Mr Bookers. Ruth Brookers mother was there Mrs Jackson. I liked her fine for the acgiatanice[acquaintance]. Josie is feeling bad tonight I am so sorrie for her. Jim found the turkeys nests today.
A rainy day. There was a thunder cloud this morning and this evening. Ben and Jim worked some between showers. Ben tied the cow this morning. I got a fraid she would kill her self and he untied her.
Josie has felt mighty bad today. I don't feel well. Oh at the trouble I see about that that cant be helped. Josie quilted most of the day. I got dinner. I quilted some this evening & tonight. Irvin Harvey come this evening and brought us some salit. I was glad of it. Henry and Edna went to school. Bob Starkey wants to rais a barn to morrow.
A good day. Jim split wood some today. Ben went to a barn raising at Mr Elders on Bob Starkeys land. Did not get home until night. Josie milked two cows. The other one we could not do any thing with. Franklin went to school today the first time in several weeks.
Nat Wooding brought us some salit to day. We were glad of it. Denia Blair come to see us a little while today. She come to see Mrs Bookers She was not at home and she come here.
A bad day. Rained some & cool. Jim and Ben worked a round some when it was not raining. Josie staid at home and got dinner. She has a quilt in the frames. I did very common. I went to Lee Brumfields and spent the day. I had a pleasand day. Grace had a good dinner. John & Edwin Brumfield was there at work on the porch. Os(crossed out) Oscar Brumfield come for me and brought me home. I was glad to go but hated to leave. So much for Josie to do. Effie come with us home but did not get out of the car. She got some flowers.
Another rainy day. Jim & Ben worked some when it was not raining. Ben helped Norman Booker a bout his stable this morning.
Marvin Smith came down for feed. He eat dinner with us. We were all so glad to see him. John & Edwin Brumfield come a while this evening. Grace come with them. We were all so glad to see them. Josie finish quilting on her quilt. I bound it this evening. Hattie washed to day. They did not get dry. I want it to get clear so bad.
A colde windy day.Ben went to the Mill at Level Run. Jim went to Chatham. He went with Norman Booker to Gretna. Ben worked a round the house all the evening. Henry went to Mr. Woodings and got some turnip salit. Josie got dinner. She has bin very [pert?pent] to day and I am glad. I hemed one quilt today. We all went to Mr. Booker's this evening. Mrs Jackson and Mrs Less Bookers was there. We had a pleasant evening. It is so colde tonight that we have fire like winter time.
A beautiful day. We went to Marvins and eat dinner. Ben had a time to crank his car but finely did get it to go. We had a good trip concidering the bad roads. Carrie was not looking for us but had a plenty dinner. They had a lot of company. John and his wife & daughter Mr and Mrs Hodges Mrs Love & children Christinia & Floyed Reynols. We got home in time to do our work. Mr Kent come and hindered Ben. He did not milk one of the cows. Mrs Kent is sick with flue.
Jim got home tonight I am glad that he come tonight.
A good day. Ben sowed clover seed. Jim got rock off the new ground. Josie got dinner. She cut salit and stewed peaches. I put a quilt in the frames. We both quilted this evening. We both milked tonight. I milked the cow that kickes so some times. Hattie washed the clothes dried and we took them in. Gladice Brumfield come with the children from school. Franklin Brumfield and Alvin Mayhew stoped at Mr Booker and stayed an hour or more this evening.
A good day. Ben plowed some with a double plow. Jim plowed some in the garden. Norman Booker helped them some today. The children went to school all but Mabel and she cried most of the morning. Tonight she was good. Josie starched her clothes. I got a snack except make the bread. Josie done that. Josie milked this morning and tonight we both quilted some. Ben quilted some tonight. I have bin reading when I should of bin in bed. I am olde eneough to do better.
A good day. Ben plowed under rye. Jim plowed some in the garden and planted potatoes & onions. Josie and I finished the quilting. Josie milked. The cow kicked her and hurt her leg. Ben milked that cow tonight.
I finished two of Josies quilts this evening. Josie made Mable some drawers this evening. Mabel has cried a lot today. I think that something hurts her. Norman Booker traded horses today.

A cool rainy day. Ben & Jim worked in the orchard pickin up and burning brush as long as they could and not get wet. Henry and Edna went to school. Josie made Henry a shirt, I worked the button holes and put on the buttons. I churned & got dinner. I finished three quilts, that is all of them ready to use.
A cloudy day no rain. Ben & Jim worked in the orchard cleaning up. Henry went to school. Edna had a colde & did not go.
Josie & I ironed all the morning. Josie got dinner.
Kate Harvey came a few minutes this morning would not stay for dinner. Ben planted some vines at the porch this evening Henry went to [Renan] late this evening and got some fish. He come home sick. Hope he will be well by morning. I milked Lady cow tonight.
A good day. Ben went to the Island to Pat Woodings for two pigs for Kate Harvey. He come home by eleven oclock. Jim & Henry shucked corn. They finished shucking & hauled it to the corn house. It was dark when they come with the last of it. Ben has gone to Strait Stone tonight. Josie and I got dinner. We had fresh fish for breakfast & dinner. Josie baked pies for dinner tomorrow. I killed a hen. We hope that Marvin's folks will come. I am a fraid it will be raining.

They did not come in the house. They played with the children while they staid.
A nice day. Jim gardened most of the day. Ben plowed in the rye. This evening Ben & I went to Gretna. We carried some butter and two bushel of onions. Solde them all to Mr. Rucker. Bought several things and come home and left most of them at Gretna. I am very much bothered about leaving them. Cordie Blair come this evening. I was glad to see her. Josie got most of the dinner and all of supper. She milked one of the cows. Today is Jims birth day.
A very windy day and some rain. Lee and Oscar come and got two loads of corn stalks this morning. Ben finished plowing in the orchard today. Jim made a hot bed to day and worked in the garden half the day. The children went to school. Mabel has a bad colde and is so cross that we cant hardly stand her. Josie has sewed some today. I fixed some on my chicken coops and sewed on my quilt a little. I have wrote Carrie a letter to night. Now it is time that we was in bed.
A very good day. Ben plowed all day. Jim cleaned up the land for Ben to plow. Henry plowed a little after he come from school. Josie ironed this morning. I churned and got dinner this evening. I went to George Blairs. Denia was not at home she had gone to Rey Worshams. Ethel has a new boy. I hope that Ethel & baby may get on well.
Henry Blair was at home. He brought me home on his new car. I was glad. I cant walk much now like I once could. I am glad of any kindness that is given to me.
A good day. Ben plowed this morning. Jim plowed this evening and Ben ditched the spring branch. Henry & Edna went to school. Franklin has bin sick all day his birth day. He is six years olde today. Josie ironed all the morning. I got dinner. Josie sewed some this evening. I sewed on my quilt. Will be glad when I get it done.

A good day. Jim plowed and Ben ditched on the Spring Branch. The school children come home at twelve oclock. Josie got dinner. I sewed on my quilt. I finished it. This evening Josie and Ben went to [Mount Airy] this evening. I washed up the dinner dishes while they were gone. Franklin is sick yet. Henry has gone to George Blains to go gigin. This is first trip of that sort. I hope that nothing wont happen to him. I am worried about things in spite of knowing I should be thankful that things is no worse.
A good day Ben & Jim finished the ditch and cleaned out the springhouse. Jim plowed this evening. Ben worked on his car a little. Josie baked a cake this morning. Together we got dinner then I went to Reynols's. Bruce is at home. He brought Mollie some of the nices candy I most ever saw.
Christenia was colering eggs for Easter. Johnson was fixing his tobacco land. Jim set one turkey today. Hope that the others will set soon.

Robert & Reubin Reynolds come a few minutes. I was glad that they come. They would not stay for dinner.
Josie & I got dinner. We had a roast hen and a very nice cake and not much besides.

A cloudy cool day. Jim plowed all day. Ben cleaned up the branch in the morning. Henry and Edna went to school. Come home at noon & Ben and Josie and all of the children went to Mount Airy to a spelling bee. I staid at home a while. Norman Booker & family went to Level Run and to Jim Bookers fish trap. They had a fish fry. It was very nice much better than I expected. There was a crood there and all seemed to enjoy the sport. Norman Bookers horse got cut in the wire fence yesterday. I do so much thank them for taking me with them.
A cloudy day and a little rain. Jim and Ben worked most of the day. The children went to school. Franklin has a cold. Josie & I got a snack for dinner. Josie washed dishes. I went to Renon and to see Kate Harvey. Had a pleasant evening. I walked there and back. Some thing I won't do many more time without a change. I have to do so much hard work here that I can't get no rest and then don't do half eneough to suit them that I do for.
A rainy day & cool. A bad day on little chickens. The men could not work much. Henry & Edna went to school today. Josie & I got a snack for dinner. Johnson Reynolds come as we was ready for dinner. He eat with us.I was glad that he did. I have not worked on anything to day like sewing.
Josie is not well. She has a colde and says she feels so sad. I hope that she may soon feel better. She helped me milk tonight.

Josie found her pin that she lost a week or so ago. I am miserable. There is so much that is needing to be done and no one much able to do. And them that could be so much help is not willing but there will be some sort of a way provided for the children.
A good morning. Cloudy and some rain this evening. Josie and Ben and some of the children are very much complaining. Think they have the flue. Ben has bin in bed nearly all day. Henry went to school. Come home and went to the store. He got some fish. Josie and I cleaned them ready for breakfast. Jim worked on his new ground all morning. Plowed this evening. I have done what cooking was done and not much besides. I know I dont do what I might but a bout all that I am able to do. I want to see Carrie and the children so bad.

I do hope that they will soon be better and that none of the rest will get sick. Jim came home ok. He eat dinner at Marvins. I am glad that he did. Wish I could of bin there two. He came with Faber and Paul and Alma part of the way home. I am glad that he did get to come that way. Oh when I get to thinking about all of the children. I want to see them so bad but cant go and they wont come.

Ben and Josie and Edna is sick and Mabel. They all have flue we think. Henry went to school. I have done what cooking has bin done. Milked this morning. tonight Josie helped. I know she should not do as much as she does. Hattie washed here this morning. I am distressed a bout them all being sick and I cant do what is needing to be done.
A cool day some frost this morning Tim has plowed some. Ben has tried to work this evening. Him & Josie are some better of their cough. I do hope that they all may get well soon. Henry is not well tonight. I do hope that they all will soon be well. Edna and Franklin went to the store today for beef & salmon. Henry come by from school and got coffee & corn flakes. I wrote two letters and got one today.
I put out fifteen little chickens this evening. Franklin got out some nails that was in old paleings to build a coop to put the hen & chickens in.
A good day Ben & Jim worked all day. Henry did not go to school the first day he has missed this [seccion?session]. The baby has cried the most of the day. She is not well. I got a letter from Carrie today. I am always glad to hear from them. I have bin sick all day but not so [bad] but I could go until about night. I could not get supper. Hope I will soon be better. All has bin sick some but Jim. I do hope he may not get sick. We got the first greens from the plant bed today. I am glad we will have plenty soon.
A rainy day the most of the day. The men folks cold not do much work. They worked some between showers. Ben and Josie milked this morning and tonight. Josie has done the cookin. I have sick all day. Hope I will soon be well as usual.
Mabel come to my bed and got in and went to sleep the first time in her life that I know of.

Ben eat Dinner at Johnsons to day was [Rauly?] Birth day he eat Dinner at Home he was 22 years olde today. Josie was Sick last night. She got up and got Breakfast. I have bin up all day but did as little as I could. heard today that Marvin is sick hope he may Soon be well I want to See them all so bad. The Boys [commenced?] to plant corn this evening. I hope the Weather will stay good a while.

I got a letter from Carrie today. Marvin [wry?] out trying to work. Josie [ironed?] and starched today will have a big ironing to morrow. I got Dinner went to the plant seed for [salit?]. Henry & Edna went to School then Henry & Franklin went to the store got home at dark. Henry brought a jug of [ail?] I was glad he got it.
A rainy Day. Josie carried Henry and Edna to school. She drove Jake. She come by the store. I got a bushel of meal and paid [Hulebard?] what we owed him. The men could not do much today. Ben killed three crows. Josie and I got a snack for dinner. Josie made Mabel a pair of drawers. I worked the button holes in them. I sewed a little on any guilt did not get it done.
A Rainy day the men could not do much of anything Josie made Mabel some little drawers Mabel is proud of them. I finished the squares for a quilt we don't have much trouble cooking not much to cook. Henry & Edna went to school one of the Mayhew children got sick at school and they had to send for him I wrote [cousine] a letter.
A cloudy day not much rain. Ben & [Booker] went to the [wlang] for [guano] they got home about two o'clock. Jim worked on his new ground. Josie cut Salit for dinner. I done the cooking Josie I [?oned] Fate Harvey came to see us and Mrs. Booker & two little children. Then Mollie Reynolds come ( was glad to see them all do hope that the weather [?] will soon get good. Today was Eva Smiths birth day. She is four. I want to go there to see them all so bad.
A day that did not rain. The boys hauled wood most of the day. Henry went to the store for beef and soda. He went to Jessie Hutcherson for oil. There is a play at the school house tonight. [ho?] one went from here [orvin?]. Harvey was here this evening for some [salit?} Alvin Farmer was with him on a car. Josie has worked all day cleaning up and making beds. she baked a nice cake this morning. I have bin up most of the day but did not do much of anything. I hived some bees this evening. I hope they will stay here and work.
A good day. Jim staid at home alday. Been and family went to Mr. Towers this evening. I went to Norman Bookers this evening. They had a lot of company. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Booker was there. Otho and Sallie and George and Ida and [carchie?]. Blair and I went up there a while. Mrs. Booker called and invited me. I enjoyed seeing them all. I come home and milked and fed the chickens
Mabel is sick tonight. I do hope she may be well by morning. I hope that all may get well and stay so a while.
A good day Fanny Tower come last night. She was with us at Breakfast Hattie washed here today. This evening Ben Brought to [Onarins?] Smiths when we got here Carrie & the children had gone to [Renan] we mised them Reese found the peice of the drill that they thought was lost. Carrie said that Josie had milked all of the cows I feel worried a bout so much to do and I am not helping.
A good day I got Carrie to go to town. and do some shopping for me this morning She mailed some of the things to Josie I [staid] with the little children Carrie had [salit] and Straw Berries for Dinner This evening Carrie and I picked about five gallons Carrie sent some of her neighbors some and will preserve the rest the children and I went to the creek but could not find anywhere to fish [neese?] got me a pen & ink to night.
A good morning. had a Thunder cloud this evening and a very hard rain. Reese come Home at noon to take us to Galveston to see Lizzie Bennett. the rain come so we could not go. I picked Straw berries most of the morning Carrie preserved some of them. Carrie made a part of a little suit for Roy to be in a play at the School House I have not seen John or any of his folks yet hope to see them soon I want to know what they are doing at Home so bad Hope they are getting on ok.
A good day Carrie finished Roys suit this morning she killed a chicken for Dinner I dressed it I gathered some Straw Berries This evening Marvin carried Carrie and the little girls and I to see Lizzie and her folks all of the Family and Frances & her Baby was there Alma & Gordon & Frances intends to go to Danville in the morning I an anxious to hear from home have not seen John yet want to go there tomorrow if I can.

A rainy day. They finished planting tobacco here today had plenty of plants that was good ones. Josie has bin some better today. I got dinner. Mrs. Car churned and washed dishes. This evening I went to the curant bushes and cheries trees. There was a lot ripe. I phoned Mollie that she could get some currants. Christenia and Millie come but it rained so that they could not gather them. We had beets that was raised this year for dinner today. I will be so glad when we can get vegetables a plenty.

Mrs. Car and Mrs. Trent went to Cedar Forest Church to day. Nellie wored on Mrs. Trents dress. I got dinner. Nellie washed dishes after dinner. Nellie baked a cake this evening.
I killed and dressed two chickens for dinner to morrow. I was glad when Mrs. Car and Mrs. Trent got home I was so afraid that they would get wet.
A good day. We all staid at home all the morning. Mrs. Trent and I got dinner. This evening Ben carried Nellie to [gretna?]. Jim and I went with him. We all went to [Marvins?] They were all well. [Reese?] carried aunt Nell to the station. The we started home. Oscar Brumfield had trouble with his car. Ben helped him get it to run a gain it made us late. Mr. Hubbard and Family and Ellen and two of her children cam to see Josie. I am glad that they came. Would of liked to see them myself.
A good day. Jim plowed in the [Toleaces?] Ben Helped thrash wheat at Ann [Edmons?] and at Mayhews. I got Dinner. Mrs [Trent?] ironed. We had no company today. I went to Mr Bookers to see Mrs Ronner an olde Lady. She is Mrs Bookers grandmother. Denis & [Coralie?] was at Mrs Bookers but did not stay long they thought it was going to rain but it did not.
A very hot day. A good day. The boys finished plowing corn & tobacco. Then commence to plowing peas. Josie got a letter from Effie Brumfield & Thelma & Marys pictures. Mrs Trent ironed all the morning. Mrs Car churned & strung the snaps for dinner. I got dinner. I set a round most of the evening. Mrs Trent sewd some. I wanted to go some where that I could fish but could not go. I miss Reese so much. Some of them here has me where they want me - work and stay at home.
A good day - very warm. Ben & Jim finished plowing the peas. Ben went to Mr Bailisses. There was a picknick at [Gladys?] to day. There was lots of people there so them that was there say. Hugh Brumfield carried Henry and I to the mill at Whitefalls. We did not catch many fish [mollies?]. Reynolds & [Johnson?] come to see Josie this evening. Hattie Gilbert washed here to day.
A good day. rain tonight we are glad of it. Jim and Ben Topped Tobacco all morning They dug Potatoes this evening and sowed some peas. Josie has tried to work some today with her punch needle. Mrs. Trent ironed all the morning. Mrs Car shelled butter beans the first that we have had. We had tomatoes for the first [time] this year.
I got dinner cooked cabbage and butter beans & baked apples. This evening I hemed a table cloth. Edna helped me milk what she could. We have not had any company today.
Well I am most a sleep.
A rainy morning clear this evening. Ben helped to raise a barn at Dick Woodings. Jim went to Reynols and got a big basket full of nice peaches. Mrs Trent and Mrs Car and I peeled them. We had peaches and cream dinner and supper and Mrs Car caned 13 quarts. I am so glad of them. Mrs Trent ironed to day. I hemed a table cloth. I got dinner cooked snaps and cymblings and fried two chickens. I went to the orchard this evening and got a few apples and a few peaches. I am glad of the fruit this time. Josie is suffering to night.
A good day. The boys topped tobacco all morning. Jim went to Chatham this evening. Ben carried him to Gretna I went as far as Coleman Mayhews. Mathew Mayhew buried this evening. Mr Barber preached his funeral. There was a big crowd at the burial. I did not go to the grave. Carrie and Marvin and four of the children come and I come with them home. They eat supper with us. Mrs Trent went home this evening. I was very sorry to see her go. Grace sent me some apples by Ben. I was glad of them.
A good morning rain this evening. We all staid at home all day. Mrs Car & Henry made ice cream. I got dinner fried chicken cooked butter beans & potatoes baked tea cakes. Ben looked for Jims turkey did not find her. Jim come home with Norman Booker from Gretna. Jo Edmons and [Jac?son] Emerson come to see Henry. They all went to the branch to bathe. Josey & Johnson & Charlott come a few minutes. Edna helped milk this morning & tonight. Oh Lord take care of all of us.
A good day. Clouds about but did not rain here. Jim & Ben & Henry[?] suckered tobacco all day. Marvin & Rose Smith eat dinner with us. I was glad to have them. Mrs Booker came to see us this evening. Mrs Car churned and helped shell butter beans & scraped potatoes helped me get dinner what she could. I got cabbage & cymblings and butter beans cucumber & tomatoes & potatoes for dinner. Hattie [Gillient?] washed here today. Kate Harvey come this morning. She brought Henry two shirts & nice apples.
A good morning rain this eve & tonight. The boys suckered tobacco this morning. Ben [drawed?] the wheat out of the box. It was heating. He intended going to the mill if it had not rained. Ben & Henry went to the store tonight. Have got in at nine o'clock. Mrs Car churned and shelled butter beans and scraped potatoes. We get plenty tomatoes now. Ella Hubbard sent Josie a nice basket of tomatoes by Nat Wooding today. I got a letter from Effie Brumfield today was glad to get it am always glad to hear from them
A cloudy day. Jim went to Mr Ned Walkers to help him cover a house. Ben went to the mill did not get all of his grinding done. He topped tobacco this evening. The Moorfields come for Rock a bout their flues. Max Car come late this evening. Carrie sent a box of something to eat to Josie. She sent it to Renon. Henry went after it. Mrs Baker sent some light bred by Ray. It was nice. Josie eat some of it while it was warm. I got dinner and ironed some this evening. Josie is suffering so bad.
A good day. The men suckered tobacco all day. Max Car went from here this evening. Denia Blair come to see Josie this evening. She brought some nice strawberries that Sallie Blair sent to Josie. Nat Wooding sent her 4 peaches very nice. Mollie Reynolds come to see Josie late this evening. I got dinner. Mrs Car helped me what she could.I starched the clothes. Intend to iron in the morning. Several of the people met at Straight Stone this evening and cleaned up the church.
A good day. Ben & Jim & N worked in the tobacco part of the day. Lizzie and [Louisa?] Bennett and my sister Mrs [?] come today. I was so glad that they come. Mrs Edmons & Jamie Gravely come to see Josie a little while. Mrs Hutcherson come and Julia Fergerson & Reubin Reynols come a little while. Mrs Edmons brought apples, Mrs Hutcherson apples & peaches & plums, Lizzie brough a cake & ban[a]nas. I am glad of all the kindness that is bestowed on Josie. Little Paul Smith eat dinner with us. Jim went home this evening.
A good day. Ben & Henry went to Marvin Smiths to hunt minks. Could not start any. They eat breakfast up there. This evening Ben looked for the turkeys that is missing but did not find them. Grace B come and brought us some apples. Lee come and got the cider mill. Henry went to spend the night with Hugh Brumfield. I have not worked much today. Would be glad I had done more. Will have to make up for my idleness to morrow if I am able. I heard today that Levi East is dead. I knowed him when he was a little boy.
A good day. We all staid at home all the morning then Ben & the children and Mrs Car went to Jim [Powers?]. Alice Thomson and Kate Hubbard & Christenia Reynols come. Alice brought Josie a box of figs. Christenia brought some [ice?]. Carrie & her children come. Jim was with them and went back with them. Josie has not suffered so much to day. I hope she may sleep tonight. Carrie brought Josie a box of grapes.
A good day. Ben went to Gretna to meet Jim & Nel. They come got here for dinner. This evening Ben went to White Falls for flour. All the children and I went & fished. Some caught several small fish one eel did not bring them home. Ben had all he could manage on his car. We come by Renons. Ben bought some things. I think most every body is getting ready for the meeting. I am so near asleep that I keep scratching up my book.
A good morning rain late this evening. The men worked in the tobacco all day. Lizzie Bennett was with us today. Alma & Louise went to [st..?] Stone to the assosiation. We are very glad to have Lizzie with us. We have not fixed any thing on account of sickness. Mr Hutcherson and Ada come by this evening and brought Josie a nice box of things to eat. We have a lot of vegetables now. We heard that Carrie was at the meeting. I would of liked to see all the folks that I know that was there.
A cloudy day but no rain. The men worked in the tobacco all day. Henry went to Strait Stone to the meeting. I think he had a fine time. Mrs [Dews?] & Mrs Power come to see Josie. Farmor Dews brought them. They brought Josie a box. Mrs Kellie sent her a box. Mr Thomson sent her some ice. Nellie cand[sic] five cans of tomatoes. I got dinner. Mrs Car churned. Jim & Ben killed the bees tonight. That is the last of my having any thing to do with bees I guess.
A good day. Ben & Jim went to Ned Walkers and helped to cover a stable. Henry worked in the tobacco. I cut the honey out of [qu..?]. Nella[?] got dinner. Mrs Edmons sent some cake and chicken her this morning. Lillian Kent come up here this evening. She brought cake & some nice meat. Every one has bin so good to Josie. Mrs Car is very sick. The Doc was to see her this evening. Kate come and staid with us to night. Ben has gone after Ella Hubbard [near?] 9 o'clock.
A good day. A thunder-cloud tonight not much rain yet. The men worked in the tobacco. Ben went to [Strait?] Stone at twelve o'clock for ice. Josie has not suffered so much to day. Mrs Car has bin very sick all day. Mr Dews come by this evening. He brought plums & pears and apples. I was glad of the apples. Lawson Power come by to see his Grandma & Josie. He was on his way to Mr [Farrows?]. They are having a [crowd?] there tonight. Kate [Hanerey?]staid with Mr Car last night.
A good day. Jim & Ben & Henry worked on the tobacco all the morning. This evening Ben carried me & all the children to Cedar Forest. I fished some. Caught three fish. Ben went to Mrs Powers. We come by Thomsons Store. We bought a few things some cups & sausers[sic]. Nellie & Ella peeled some peaches & Nellie caned[sic] them and some tomatoes. Josie went up stairs and staid with her mother some today. Mrs Car has bin in bed two day[s]. Mollie Reynols come to see the sick.
A good day rain tonight. Jim & Norman Booker walked around in the crop all the morning. Ben carried Ella Hubbard home. All the children went with him. Nellie and I got dinner. Louisa John & family come to see Josie this evening. The Boys got their first water mellons[sic] today. I peeled 4 pounds of pears today. Gathered some snaps for tomorrows dinner. Mrs Car come to the table to day. I am so glad she is better.
A good day. The boys worked on their tobacco all day. Nellie has bin very busy today. she got dinner & churned gathered some grapes to make jellie. I went to Miss Willie Woodings burial. There was a big crowd at the burial. I went with Mr Booer[sic] & family. It was kind of him to take me. Mrs Car has him up all day or nearly so. This evening I cut some grass in the garden and gathered a few snaps for dinner tomorrow. Hattie washed here today. The children and I got the clothes in tonight.
A good day. Jim & Henry worked in the tobacco. Ben went to [Renan?]. He was one of the judge[s] of the election. [Irvin? or John?] Harvey come for me & brought me home. The children went with me. I went to Kate Harveys & staid a little while. Jamie Gravely was there. Virginia & Jamie was fixing up their supper to take on a hay ride. They have a beautiful night for their ride. Nellie made some jellie & caned[sic] tomatoes this morning. Mrs Car strung the snaps & shelled butter beans & churned. I gathered tomatoes and corn. I cooked it all. We had two [water?] mellons.
A good day. The boys helped cut tobacco at Norman Bookers. Jim & Henry eat dinner at Bookers. Ben come home. This evening Pearl Wiggonton & and her mother & Virginia Harvey come to see Josie. Mrs Alice Carter come a few minutes. Mrs Booke[r] come. She brought some snaps. & peas. Kate brought snaps. I am glad of them. We have had two fine musk mellons today. Max Car come this evening. I am so near asleep that I cant write.
A good day. The men worked in their tobacco most of the day. Late this evening Ben went to Mr Dews for fruit. the children and I went with him. He got pears & apples and plums and some snaps. We come by the Store and got sugar. Nellie made some jellie & caned some tomatoes. I got most of the dinner. Mrs Car is here yet. Josie has not felt so good today. There has not bin any one to see her to day. I milked when I got back from Dews as it was about dark.
A good day. the boys shod horses 7 plowed a little in the garden. This evening Ben carried Jim & Nellie to Gretna. Nellie would go home and Jim went with her. Mrs Anderson & Fannie Hendricks come to see Josie this evening. Carrie and the children come to see us this evening. I was so glad that they come. Mrs Car and Nellie & Josie peeled a lot of little pears today. I intend pickling and preserving them in the morning. I will miss Nellie tomorrow. Will make out some way.
A good day until near night then a rain & wind and some hail. I hope not enough to damage any thing much. Ben & Henry cleared up a barn getting ready to cut tobacco. Ben has gone to Bookers barn now. Mrs Car bathed the children this evening. Mrs Dews sent me some snaps by Mr Nat Wooding. I am glad of them. I made one jar of preserves & one of pickle, and near a gallon of jellie made the damsons that Carrie brought all in jellie.
A good day. We all staid at home. I got dinner. The cows got in the corn. Ben & Henry got them out. Posie & Julia come to see Josie. they had Mildred & Charlott with them. The Reynols got home from their trip to Baltimore late yesterday. I am glad they are at home. Acie Anderson brought Fannie & Edith Power to see Josie this evening. We had colde supper tonight. Mrs Car washed the dishes then Jim & Marvin come. I had enough for them.
A good day. The boys helped Norman Booker cut tobacco. Marvin went from here soon this morning. Mrs Car peeled and caned five cans of tomatoes this morning, I got dinner. This evening I went with Edna to Reynols. Julia wanted to fit her dresses. She staid until supper. Ben went after her & went to the Store. Henry & Franklin every body is so [leryst?]. Mrs Booker sent me some snap for tomorrows dinner. Henry & Franklin went with Ben to the Store to night.
A lovely morning no rain to stop work. Ben & Jim and Norman Booker and [Hand?] and Henry cut tobacco filled the first barn. They all eat dinner here. Mrs Car peeled a basket of peches for me. Mollie gave them to me. Kate Harvey come a while [yes?] I keep busy all the time when I will.
A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry suckered tobacco all day. Josie has not felt as well as usual today. Edna & Franklin went to the Store this morning for medicine. They went to Reynols this evening to see about getting Edna dresses fit. There was no one at home but Reubin & Floid[?]. I am intending to go to Gallilee to morrow if nothing happens to hinder, Jim & Ben has gone to Norman Bookers barn tonight. I got some snaps from our cornfield the first [....?]

After preaching Lizzie & Lonny[?] and Earl and wife Marvin and Carrie & the children and I went to the place we moved from. I was glad of the trip. Marvin sent me home. Russ[?] & Paul come home with me. Kate come to keep house from Mrs Car was getting dinner. Kate milked to [.......] we come by [Liz?] well I am a sleep.

This evening I washed a little. Denia come to see Josie. She did not stay but a little while. Said that the girls wanted to go to Ede Hill to night. Irvin Harvey come a few minutes this morning. [a col?] woman[?]come here this morning. Years from now some one may wonder at some of the scratch. I am asleep.

This evening Ben & the children and Mrs Car went to Mr Powers and to see Mrs Trent. She would not come with them home. I wanted her to come but dont think hard of her. I would not if I was in her position. Jim brought some fine water mellons to the house He cut two. They were very good. I made coffee & baked bread for supper. No one eat much.

Edna & Franklin brought in some wood & brought water and put up the milk while I milked the cows. Grace & Effie Brumfield come to see Josie this evening. They brought some apples. I am glad. Claud & Nellie Hendricks come. I was glad that they did. I ironed a little this evening. The boys have some fine mellons.

Norman & a little nero [negro?]helped them. They did not fill the barn. Carrie & her children come a while. I was glad to see them. I gathered some snaps for dinner tomorrow. Max can come home this morning eat dinner here. Tonight there is a gathering at Lee's and [M...?] went. I am [m....?]
A good day rain tonight. Ben finished cutting tobacco enough to fill his barn. They suckered tobacco this evening. Ben has gone to the barn tonight. Josie has suffered a lot today. No one come to see her today. I think she was glad. I got dinner and caned 8 cans of tomatoes. I am afraid they wont keep. We have some of the finest tomatoes I ever saw. I guess the rainy time will ruin them. Jim & Ben went to Renon today. Did not stay many minutes. I got supper this evening while I canned tomatoes.
A good day. Jim & Henry suckered tobacco until twelve then worked on the barns. Ben rode around trying to get help. Did not get any one. Ben is at the Barn tonight. [Clifton?] & Jane and the boy & Thelma Brunmfield come to see Josie today. I was glad to see them. I was at the kitchen getting dinner. Jane peeled the potatoes & mashed them. Mrs Car & I peeled a few tomatoes & I caned them. I walked a lot today looking for a cow and did not find her. Jim found her and a little calf. Ben helped me get her in the stall.
A good day. Ben fined tobacco all day. Jim sowed some turnip see[d] this evening. Mr Mills and his hands worked the road to day and put in a new bridge. Queen[ie] Callans washed for us today the first time. I got dinner. I cooked turnip [salit?] the first I ever cooked in August. Mollie Reynols & Thelma Brumfield walked here this evening. Johnson & Reubin come for Molly in the car. Thelma staid all night here. I am glad that she did.
A good morning. Rain this evening very hard. The branch was out of its banks. Ben went to the Cork Mill this evening. He got his wheat ground. Got home at dark. Henry and Franklin went with him. Thelma went from here this evening and walked through the mud. I went to the snap [pa.els] and got some snaps and some sweet potatoes. Think I will make some pies in the morning. Thelma ironed some this morning.
A good day. We all staid at home until twelve. Hugh & [?]& Ernest Brumfield come to see Henry there. Dave Booker come he was on a car. They all got on it and went to Lees. I got dinner. I cooked snaps and chicken baked sweet potatoes made pies. The first potatoes of this season. No one come to see us today. [I] would of bin glad for some one to come. This is a plentiful year of vegetables and fruit I have had some thing to cook that is nice most evry day. I want to be thankful.
A good day. Jim cut his first tobacco today. Evry body around was cutting today. I got dinner then started to Renan. Met Mrs Hutcherson[?] & Miss Ada. They going to Mr Edmons ask me to go and I went. I was glad to go. They cut some nice water mellons. Mrs Hutcherson & Ada Brough me to Renan. I was going to see KAte Harvey. She was gone to [Allaw..a?] so I come by Mollies. She had ice cream. Gave me a sauser full. She come with me nearly home and brought some ice for Josie.
A good day. Jim finished filling the barn with tobacco. This evening They cut for Mr Booker. Thelma spent the day here. I was glad to have her. Cordie Blair come this evening. She brought Josie some pretty flowers. I am always glad to see Cordie. I wish they all would come often. Josie has suffered a lot today. I am so sorry for her and cant do anything to help her. I went for snaps this evening. Mrs Car has strung them. Edna milked one cow this evening. She can be so much help when she will.
A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry helped Norman Booker finish cutting tobacco today. Jim is fineing his tobacco to night. Queen Callans washed for us today. Josie has bin feeling bad all day. Mollie REwnols come today. Johnson brought her & come after her. I ironed some today. The children has gone to bed & sleep. I am about asleep. Jim has some fine water mellons. I have not felt well today. Hav not eat vegetables or fruit all day. Do hope I may be well by morning.

She brought Josie some sanwitches[sic]. Josie has bin feeling bad all day. Kate carried some goods to make Franklin some [...ants]. I have not felt well today. I kept up but it was all that I could do. I gathered some snap for dinner tomorrow.
A good day. Jim fined tobacco all day. Ben & Henry helped Mr Booker move tobacco. When the men come to dinner Rufus & Max Car come with them. We had snaps & peas for dinner. I was glad that they come to see Josie. I starched the clothes that needed it then ironed all the evening, Did not get done.
A good day. The men worked on the tobacco until twelve. This evening Ben carried the children and I to White Falls. I fished some. Caught four little fish. The river was very mudy. It had bin all out of the banks. Mr Johnson & Roach[?] was at work to get the things out that had washed in the mill so that they could not grind. Sarah & Billie Emerson come to night. I am glad to see Sarah. We had turnip salit for dinner to day.
A rainy day. We all staid at home until twelve. Then Ben & Jim went to Gretna. Ben went for medicine. They went to see Marvin & Carrie. Nellie was at Marvin's. They got home about night. Sarah & Billie Emerson went home late this evening. Hope they got there safe. I got dinner all but the bread. Sarah made and baked the bread. Mrs Car washed the dishes after breakfast & Sarah churned while I milked the cows gathered snaps and killed chickens.
A good day. The men folks moved some tobacco & cut some. They cur Henry's crop. Miss Anna Hubbard and Mrs Ella & Baby come to see Josie today. They got here a bout eleven o'clock. I am glad that they come to see Josie. I got the dinner. I went and gathered snaps for dinner tomorrow. Some of them strung them. Well I am a sleep. Will go to bed soon.
A beautiful day. The men cut tobacco. Finished cutting Ben's and commenced on Jim's. Miss and Ela went home early this evening. I got dinner. I cooked snaps & potatoes and chicken and made apple dumplings. Josie had Mrs Hutcherson and Herbert Kate Harvey & Virginia & Hellen Brumfield & Mollie Reynols. Johnson come for Mollie. Queen Callans washed here today. I want to see Carrie so bad but cant go any where to stay any time.
A good day. The men cut tobacco all day. They are hoisting some now & at night. No one come today. Josie suffered most of the day. I got snaps & butter beans for denner. I went and gathered peas and got some sweet potatoes this evening. I went to the water mellon patch for the first time since it was planted. Hatties children come for apples. Say they will dry some. They may.
A good day. They finished cutting tobacco here today. I am glad. Norman Booker eat dinner with us. This evening Mrs Edmons & [...?] Worsham stopped in to see Josie. Mr Jenning come in a a while to see her. I did not see them. I was gone to get snaps. While I was gone Lawson & Fannie Power come. They are gone to Renan to night. Irvin Harvey is going to have a [tea?] at the barn and some of his friends will be with him. I hope they will enjoy it. The [asseesor?] was here today.
A good day. Jim & Ben both have tobacco in the barns. They will stay at the barns tonight. Ben went to [Carrie?] and got a girl to come and stay with us a while. Mrs Car went to them to the island. She bought several things. I went to Cedar Forest. I fished a while. I caught 6 fish. We fried them for Josies supper. Nat Wooding & wife & Mrs Peak come to see Josie today. Max is here tonight.
A good day. Ben & Jim fined tobacco all day. Henry attended to Bens this evening and Ben went with me to Gretna. We bough[sic] some things. I met up with Carries three little boys. I was glad to see them. Max Car went home this evening. Mrs Power & Baby come this evening. I am glad for them to come to see Josie while I was gone. Edna and the girl gathered snaps & peas. [Jenny?] baked a cake this morning.
A good day. Jim has staid at the barn all day. Ben has tried to start the [engine?]. Posie & [Clack?] come and helped him this evening but they could not get it to work Mrs Kellie & Lottie Kellie come here this evening. Mrs Booker come. Nellie & Carrie & Marvin & children come. I was glad to see them. A coloured girl & I got the dinner. Mrs Power & Lawson went home this evening.
Ben cut Edna's hair this evening. He certainly did hate to do it. Edna helped me milk to night.
A good day rain tonight Mrs Emerson and little daughter come in here out of the cloud. She had bin to Renan to meet her mother. Jim quit his [house?] of tobacco tonight.
Two colered girls picked the dried beans today. We looked for Lizzie Bennett this evening. She did not come.
Ben tried to start his engine today. It would not start. We all are sorry a bout it.
A good day. Mrs Emerson went from here by the time she could see to travel. I hope she got home OK. Jim and the children picked up some apples this evening.
Ben carried Mrs Car to Jim Powers this evening. I went as far as Cedar Forest. I fished some. Did not catch any thing any [.....?]. I walked most all the way from Cedar Forest to Mr Powers before I met Ben. We got home in good time. Nellie milked with Edna's help. I got supper. Mabel is sick to night. Hope she will be well by morning.
A good day. Jim & Ben carried some apples to John Hutchersons and ground them for cider. Jim made a hog trough this evening. Corn is out at our house. Nellie worked on some waists for Franklin today. Fanny made Edna some bloomers yesterday. A col[oured] girl and I got dinner. Nellie made the bread for supper and milked with Edna's help. Daisy the col[oured] girl and I picked a few peas this evening. Mabel has bin as well as usual to day. I got some nice sweet potatoes today.
A good day. Ben moved some tobacco this morning. This evening Ben carried three of the children and I to White Falls. I caught 28 fish. Henry drove the team to the mill except the hill leading to the mill at the cork mill. We had a good time. The children done fine for them. Grace & May Brumfield and two children come while I was gone. I would of bin glad to see them. I am glad that they come to see Josie anyway. Daisy the col[oured] girl and I went to washing this morning. Queen Callans come to wash. I let her & Daisy wash a [beg?].
Well another day has gone. Ben & Henry went to Gretna to carrie Marvin Smiths rake & mower. They have just got home nine at night. Jim worked on a hog lot most of the day. Nellie helped him move a little tobacco this morning. Nellie & Edna milked last night & this morning & tonight. I got dinner. Daisy ironed some. She washed for her self this evening. Mollie Reynols come to see Josie this evening. Johnson come after her. Josie has suffered a lot today. Nellie got a letter from Eylin tonight. I am glad that she got [it].
A very hot day. Daisy and I ironed most of the morning. Daisy washed the cook room this evening. I mended some over alls and sewed on a few buttons. Nellie sewed on buttons and made two under waists. The men folks cut & set up corn this evening. The little (col)[sic] children picked some peas.
Ben & Henry went to the barn tonight to make fines. Mabel slept this evening and now she is wide awake and I wish she would not make so much fuss.
A good day. Very warm. We all staid about home but Ben went to Cedar Forest for Mrs Car. They went to Rob Hubbards and spent the day. They got home a bout night. Lizzie & Alma and Gordon & family all come to see Josie this evening. Josie has felt some better today. I and a col[oured] girl got dinner today. I churned. Fanny Power went joy rideing this morning with [Orvel?]& Jamie Gravely. This evening they went to Gretna. Fannie is a fine girl I think. She has waited on Josie faithful all this week.
A good morning rain this evening. We were going to the Store & mill so as to fish and it rained. Then it cleared up and we went. I fished a little while and then I decided it was going to rain a gain so we started for home. We stopped at Thomsons Store a while and when we started a gain the rain met us. We all got wet eneough to have to change clothes. I hope it wont hurt none of us. All of the children was with us. All of them at home staid dry but Jim & Nel. She was milking and got wet. She was not well. I hope it wont hurt her.
A good day. Ben & Jim and Henry cut & shocked corn today. Nellie has bin complaining all day. Daisy and I got dinner. Denia Blair come to see Josie today. I went with her as far as the pea patch. Could not get green peas eneough to make a [meer?]. I come by Mrs Booker. I got peas eneough to cook. Ben & Jim drove up my cow this morning. I milked her tonight. I got some potatoe vines for the cows. Mr Edmons & Mrs Edmons was passing. They brought the vines for me.
A beautiful day. The men cut corn. The children went to school. School commened at Renan to day. Nellie & Edna done the milking. Daisy and I done the cooking. Mabel staid with Mrs Car most of the morning. John Hutchersons children come this evening and got twe kittens. I hope they can rais them. [Ella?] Mayhew come a little while and played with the children. Josie was very sick today. Ben went to Mrs Hendricks and got her some ice. He went quick.
A good day. The men cut corn. The children went to school. I got dinner & churned. Nellie milked and caned some apples & made jellie. Daisy & Queen both (col[oured)] washed. Mrs Dr Owen come to see Josie a while this evening. Josie has bin lead off all day. Fanny Power come back tonight. Miss Janie Gravely come with her. She did not stay but a few minutes. Mabel has bin good all day today. I broke my glasses to day. A Mrs Layne come here begging today.
A good day. I was at home this morning and got most of the breakfast. After breakfast Ben said he would carrie me to Gretna & to Carries and I could stay until Sunday. I got ready as fast as I could and we went. He carried the children as far as the school house. I went to Carries at ten oclock. Fond them weel. I eat dinner and worked some button holes in Carries baby's aprons. Had a good evening.
Thought a bout them at home a lot while I was a way.
A good day. I am at [marv..]. We eat breakfast and Corrie got dinner. Reese staid at Altavista all night at Dr Smiths. He had bin to Lynchburg and had his eyes examined. He come a bout 9 oclock. We got bait and went to Owens pond. We caught some fish. We come home and eat dinner then went Galveston and fished a while. Come to Gretna and stoped. Bought several things and went home. There was a cloud in the night thundered and rained a little.
A good day I am at Carries but must go home today. John & Christenia Brumfield come to Marvins to see me. They did stay long. I was glad that they come. After they went Carrie & I walked a round some. Went to see the ice pond and the nice apples in the young orchard then went home and eat dinner. Then come home. Carrie and all the children come home with me. Fond all well and doing well but Josie. She is very bad off. Evry thing looks like they did not miss me. I milked to night.
A good day. Ben disked land for oats. Jim fixed up the shed ready for stripping tobacco. Max Car went from here today. Kate Harvey come to see Josie this evening. I went to George Blairs. The girls was at home. Their mother was gone to Altavista to hear Billie Sunday preach. Otho & Sallie went. Otho drove the car. Ann Coles & Ellen Lewis washed for the Blairs. I was so glad to see them all again. Ben has gone hunting to night. The weather is cool to night.
A good day. Jim stripped a little tobacco. Ben disked his land for oats. Nellie made some pickle and got dinner with Daisys help. Queen washed to day. I went to Reynols and spent most of the day. Jim Thomson & family come down there. Jim helped set up corn. Alice and the children & Mildred Fergerson come here to see Josie. [Ila?] & Cordie come to see Mrs Booker. She was not at the house and they come down here. Julia Fergerson come to her fathers today. Effie B come to spend the night.
A beautiful day. Ben went to Long Island for guano. Jim stripped tobacco Nellie got dinner. Daisy ironed. I went with Johnson & Mollie to the island. I fished. Did not catch any thing worth keeping. We eat dinner at Cedar Forest. Mollie had a good lunch. John & Edwin come to see us a little while. Jim & Nellie went with them back to Gretna on their way to Chatham. [Evrylin?] is at home. Mrs Mayhew & Rena come a little while this eve. Fannie has gone to Kate Harveys to night.
A good day. Ben tried to start the [lig..?] engine and could not get it to work. I got dinner. Ben carried Mabel and I to White Falls. I caught 18 fish. I know that Ben is tired of me bothering him about going. I work for him and his family and dont get thanked for it. Josie is feeling very bad. Fanny got supper and all of them eat while I was milking. This is guess work writing.
A good day. Ben disked. He had Mr Edmons disk. Jim come home this evening. I got dinner. Daisy col girl washed some this morning. Mr Rufus Car & family come to see Josie today. Kate Harvey & Julia Fergerson come this evening. Heard to day that John & Edwin started to Washington today. Miss Janie Gravely & her friend come in a few minutes this evening. Fanny Power went with them home. They expect company there tonight. Heard tonight that Ray Booker is sick. He has diphtheria. I hope he may soon be well.
A good day. Ben worked on his wheat land. Jim stripped tobacco. Fanny went home. I am sorry for we will miss her so much. She was so good to wait on Josie. Ray Booker is very sick. I went up there this evening to see him. Dr Owen & Dr Shelton are there tonight. I do hope that he may get well. Ben & Henry went hunting to night. Jim went to Mr Bookers. Josie went in the Parlor this evening. Fanny helped her to go in and come out.
A good day. Ben & Jim staid at home until dinner. Then they went to look for fallen apples. They found some. Daisy and I got dinner. I bathed the children Mabel & [F....?] Late this evening Tim & Lizzie and Henry Blair & his wife & Nellie Hendrix come. Lizzie stayed all night and will stay this week. I am glad Ray Booker is some better. I hope he will get well soon. Henry went to Renan this evening.
A fine day. Cool tonight. Jim & Ben worked on the oat land. [I?] Some chaps shucked a shock of corn this morning and put it in the corn house. I and the col girl got dinner. I churned this evening. Ben went to the island for grass seed. Mabel and I went with him. I fished a little while. Caught two little fish. Lizzie helped get supper while I milked the cows. Ben & Jim & Rob Hubbard has gone hunting tonight. Dont know when they will get home.
A good day. Jim & Ben worked on their grain land all day. Robbert Hubbard & wife went from here this evening. Carrie & the children come this evening. I was glad to see them. I hope they got home safe. Lizzie and I and the col girl shelled some corn to dry out to send to the mill. We want corn bread. Lizzie and I went to the [?] house to get potatoes and peas for dinner. I went to the barn to get sweet potatoes. Mr Kent carried the children part way to school.
A good day. The boys sowed oats today. Ben went to Gretna. Mabel and I went with him. Mabel was very good for her. We staid nearly all the evening. Ben had some work done on his batteries. Mollie was here this evening. Ben carried her home & Lizzie went with her. Josie has felt very bad all day. I have had corn out drying today. I done nearly all about dinner. Lizzie churned for me and helped me do what I was doing. Daisy is very good help.
A good day. Ben cut peas for Kate today. Jim stripped tobacco. Jim & Ben both tied some tonight. Lizzie is here again tonight. I am glad for her to be here. Daisy ironed some this morning. I got most of dinner & churned. The children went to school. I went this evening and gathered some peas & got some potatoes for tomorrows dinner. I got a letter from Carrie. Was glad to hear from them. Edna had to write a letter tonight. Henry has gone hunting.
A good day. Jim stripped some tobacco. Ben went to Gretna with Mr Mayhew. Come home before twelve. Commenced to make a tongue for the roller. Went to the mill with a little corn. He carried all of the children and I went two. I fished some. Caught 13 fish. Denia & Kate come to see Josie. Irvin Harvey come to see her two. Lizzie Bennett got supper for me tonight. We had beef steak. Frank Blair and his mother come tonight in the car for Lizzie. Jim & Ben & Henry went to the school house.
A good day. Jim stripped tobacco. Ben worked on a roller all the morning. This evening he carried Daisy the col girl home. All the children and I went with him. He was in a fret all the evening. I think now that I never will ask him to take me any where a gain. Lizzie come here this morning. Denia come with her but would not come in the house. Staid and talked until a bout dinner time. Lizzie baked a cake to day. Josie had a flighty spell a gain this evening. Mollie was to see her this evening.
A beautiful day. Jim and Ben staid at home all day. Lizzie was here. she helped me get dinner. We cooked Turnip salit and a chicken. We had a nice cake. Today was Mabel's Birth day. She is three years olde. This evening Ben & Elsie East & Gladis Brumfield come a few minutes. Tim Bennett & Gordon & [Chesley?] Bennett & a Mr Hedrick come by for Lizzie. I did hate for her to go home as we have not got any body to help to do the work here now.
A good day. Ben run the light engine a while today. Rolled the oat land some. This evening he went for a coloured girl. She come. I hope I will like her. Mrs Doss come to see Josie this evening. Ella come tonight. Ray Hubbard brought her. Jim has stripped tobacco today. Mabel and I went with Ben as far as the Bridge at Stankeys. I got very impatient waiting for Ben. Mabel was good all the evening. Ray Hubbard brought Josie some nice tomatoes. Jessie sent her a Jar of pickle. Evry one is so good to her. She is thankful.
A good day. Ben raked up Kates pea hay today. Jim stripped some tobacco. Nellie Brumfield and Evylin and her husband and Mr & Mrs Gyer & baby come. I am glad that they did. They had dinner with them & eat before they come. I could of gave them dinner ok as I have help. Josie has bin a bout as usual today and that is bad. Mrs Edmons come in a few minutes this evening. They are carrying on a meeting at Strait Stone. Queen Callans washed here today.
A good day. We need rain very bad. Jim & Ben got up Kates pea hay this evening. I am so glad that it is up. I got dinner. Bettie a col girl ironed. Ben carried Ella Hubbard to Mr Towers this morning. Mollie Rey[nolds?] was here this evening. Josie has suffered most of the day. Jim plowed up the potatoes this morning. They are to pick up now. William sent the buggy home this evening by his children. Mabel has a colde. Edna is getting her lesson 8 oclock.
Heard today that Effie has a little girl Born Sep the 30th Josie Gunn.
A good day. Ben made a box for William Gilbert to bury his baby in. Jim got up the sweet potatoes and pop corn. I got dinner. Betty ironed some & washed some. This evening I went with Mr & Mrs Edmons to church. I am very glad for any one to take me with them. Mr Archer Thornton & Mrs Rufus Car & children come to see Josie this evening. Carrie & the children & Kate come a few minutes. I was glad to see them. Henry went with Mr Edmons folk to Strait Stone to night.
A good day. Jim & Ben finish cutting corn. Betty ironed all the morning. I got dinner. Mrs Edmons carried me with them to meeting. Henry has gone to meeting tonight. I like to go and meet the old & young that I know. Josie has bin [pent?] all day. Mollie come to see Josie today. Jim has shucked some popcorn. He shucked it at night.
A rainy morning. The rain was badly needed. Jim & Ben & Henry stripped tobacco all day finished Jim's cureing and loaded it on the waggon. Mr Booker & Jim put their tobacco on Mr Bookers waggon. Ben & Jim has gone to Renan & Dr Owens for medicine. I went to see Mrs Hutcherson this evening. She is very sick but feeling some better. Denia was there. Ada & Denia was sheling peas. Miss Ada brought me home on Mrs Hutcherson's car. I was glad to get home so easy. Mabel has had a good time today.

There was a lot of little girls and some boys and two men baptized. Ther was a big crowd there. Mrs Edmons brought me home. Henry went down there tonight. Josie is suffering awful tonight. Oh that we could help her.
A bad day. Jim & Mr Booker went to Gretna. They have got back as far as Mr Bookers. It is raining so hard that any one would get wet in a few minutes. I did not milk but one cow tonight. The children are at the dineing room getting their lessons. Fanny Power is with them. She come up here last night from church. Henry made a proffession last night and joined the church. Josie has not suffered so much today. Ben commenced to strip tobacco today. The children went to school today.

Rufus & Mamie come to see Josie this evening. Mr Kent come a few minutes this evening. Rob brought tomatoes & Rufus brought celery. Mamie brought potatoe salid. I had a letter from Carrie today. I am always glad to hear from them. Bruce [Rey] was married Oct 7th 1922.
A clear day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco today. I gathered some peas for dinner. No one come until late this evening. Then Carrie & the children and Nellie come. Carrie did not stay but a little while. Nellie will stay a while.
Josie has suffered very much today. Today is Henry's birth day. He is 13 years old. I went to the orchard and got some apples. I guess a hawk got one of my chickens today. It is missing any way.
A good day. Jim & Ben stripped on Henry's tobacco & finished it and loaded it on the car. Then heard that there was so much tobacco on the market that they could not hendle it. They unloaded it and packed down in the barn. Ben carried Mrs Car to Gretna this evening on her way to Lynchburg. I hope she may get there ok. Queen Callans washed here today. Heard today that a collored woman died at Mr Hutcherson's. Mollie Renols come a little while this evening. Ben's dog come home.
A good day. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco at the barn in the woods until dinner. Then Ben carried Mabel and I to White Falls. I caught 8 fish. When we got home the col girl wanted to go home. He carried her home. Nellie preserved & caned some pears today and gathered green tomatoes to make pickle. Bettie ironed most of the day. Josie had bin [pent?] of day. Jo Edmons & Henry has gone hunting to night. Jim & Ben has gone to the barn to strip tobacco.
A good day. Cloudy all the evening & rain tonight. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco until twelve then Jim carried a few apples to Hutchersons and ground them. Ben & I went to Gretna to meet Mrs Car. She did not come. WE are all sorry. Fanny bathed Franklin & Mabel. This evening Kate Harvey & Grace Brumfield Lottie Kelly and Sally Blair come to see Josie. I am glad that they come. I would of bin glad to seen them all but there was some thing that I wanted. Nellie put up some pickle this morning.
A cloudy day & some rain. Ben & Henry went to Strait Stone to meeting & Henry was baptized. Nellie and I got dinner. We had beef steak with onions in it. I went to Mollie Reynols. There was no one at home. Then I went to Renan. All the Reynols was at Clack Hubbards. While I was there Paul Bennett & Faber Jefferson & wife and children & Alma Bennet come by and stopped to patch a time and we all talked a while. I went over to see Kate Harvey a few minutes. Julia Fergerson come a few minutes.
A cloudy and some rain. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco. Tobacco is very high in order. Josie has bin suffering all day to day. Ben went to Hutchersons for tablets that they got at Gretna. The children went to school. Nellie and I got dinner. We cooked peas and turnip salit & baked potatoes. I went to the barn for the first time since the tobacco was cured. Fanny Power went home. We miss her so much. Mabel had a nap of sleep today and she cant go to sleep tonight.
A cloudy day but no rain. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day & tonight they tieing. I and Mabel went to Mr Booker. They were at the Barn at work on their tobacco. Josie has bin feeling some better today. Nellie & I got dinner. Mr Lipscome & Mrs Lipscome come to see Josie this evening. We finished putting up the sweet potatoes today. Queen washed here today.
A good day. Ben & Jim stripped some tobacco. Ben shod the horses this morning. This evening late he went for a col girl. She come. Josie has bin very bad off today. No one come to see her today. She got a box of flower[?] through the mail. Got a letter from Carrie this evening. Was so glad to hear from them. Ben intended loadeing his tobacco and going to Gretna tomorrow but he heard that they had more there than they could handle so he did not try to go.
A clear cool day some frost this morning. Ben & Jim loaded the waggon with Bens & Henrys tobacco and Ben went to Gretna this evening. Josie has bin bad off all day. Mr Power phoned that Fannie would come here if Ben would come after her. Ben was gone so we though we would get Mr Booker to go for her. Mr Kellie was at Mr Booker and said he would go and he went made a quick trip. I am so glad she is here. Late this evening Mrs Hutcherson & Lottie Kellie & Ehel Worsham & Denia Blair come and staid a little while.
A beautiful day. Ben & Jim went to Gretna. Ben solde tobacco. Was very well pleased. Ben got Marvins auto and come home last night. Josie has not suffered as much today as she does some day. Mrs Booker come to see Josie this evening. Mr Kellie brought Josie a nice box of good things to eat today. They have bin good to Josie & so have all the people a round. Kate was here a few minutes this morning. She wanted a few chickens. I have caught 4 tonight. Ben wants to commence getting land ready to sow wheat.
A good day. Jim stripped tobacco. Henry disked land for wheat. Ben put shoes on his horse then he carried Edna & I to the river. We fished. Edna caught three fish. Ben carried us and he come home & then come after us brought us home and then went to Gretna and back by late supper and now he is at the barn tieing tobacco. Jim & Nellie are tieing two [sic]. Nellie & Bettie got dinner & supper. I milked the cows. Josie is very bad off. They carried me fishing because they know I am olde that I never will go many more times.
A good day. Jim & Ben staid at home all day. Mr Sam Hubbard & Mrs Mrs Rob & Mrs Carington & Miss Anna all Hubbards come to see Josie this evening. Carrie Smith & Marvin and all the children come a little while. I went to George Blairs and eat dinner. They had a lot of company all kinds folks except Mrs Hutcherson And Miss T....?Henry went to Sunday School and then to George Blairs. Lottie Craddock combed my hair today. I am glad to be remembered that much. Today is my birth day. I am 76 years olde.
A good morning. Rain this evening. Ben worked on his wheat land until it rained. He fixed to plant some bulbs. I planted a few hyacinths. I sent for the News today. Jim & Nellie tied some tobacco today.
Nellie washed some this morning. Josie has not suffered quite as much today as she does some days. Henry carried 4 chickens to Kate Harveys this morning. He bought 4 steel traps.
A good day. Jim and Ben stripped tobacco all day. The children went to school. Nellie sewed some. Queen washed here today. Carrie Smith come a few minutes. I am always so glad to see her. She had a part of the children with her. Mollie Reynols come a little while this morning. I planted some bulbs this evening. Ben has had the prettys flower garden this year that I ever saw. Mabel has bin with me most of the evening.
A good day. Ben hauled some wood this morning & worked on his wheat land this evening. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco all day. Bettie and I got dinner. We cooked turnip & peas and potatoes. This evening I cut the Morning Glorie vine off of the garden fence and then went to Renan & to see Kate Harvey carrie the money to pay my taxes. Mr Mayhew was at the store on his machine and brough me home. I was glad that I did not have to walk. Ben & Jim is at the barn putting tobacco in the pit.
A clear cool day. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco. Ben sowed wheat finished what he expected to sow. The children went to school. Bettie ironed. I got the most of the dinner. Mrs Mayhew sent Josie some flowers by the school children. I gathered a few violets this evening. MRs Edmons come to see Josie this evening. I cut the Morning Glorie vine from garden fence yesterday and fed it to the cows today. Jim & Ben went to the barn tonight to hang tobacco. Henry has gone hunting.
A beautiful day. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco all day Ben a part of the day. Willie Bobbett come this morning and bought a calf. He paid five dollars for it. That very little but I am glad it is gone.

I would be glad that I had money so that I could do something that I want to do. As I am I work and wory to keep things going here and if they take me any where there is so much complaint a bout it I wish I could not want to go any where. A good day. We all eat dinner at home. Hinny & Edna went to Strait Stone to Sunday School. Jim started to Gretna with a load of tobacco. Less [Ro...k?]& his wife & baby & Elsie East come a few minutes. Nellie went with them. Was going to Chatham to night. Lee & Oscar come a few minutes for Nellie's hand pocket that she forgot. Mr Steven Davis and his wife & Robert Mayhew come to see Josie today. Mollie & Johnson come & brought Josie a nice box of some things to eat. Elsie brought grapes. Alice Thomson brought her a box of candy.
A good day. Ben worked on his tobacco all day. Henry and I helped him finish tieing. Tonight Henry went to Dr. Owens for tablets for his mother. Jim & Nellie has not come home yet. The children went to school today, Bettie and I got dinner. Bettie picked up the walnuts today. Mabel and I went to the barn this evening. I tied tobacco and Mabel played. Etta Gilbert brought me a few dried apples.
A good day. Ben & Jim went to Gretna. Ben went for medicine for Josie this evening. Ben carried some corn to the mill and let me go with him. I fished while they ground the corn. I caught two fish. I put them in the branch clack. Sent Josie a bird for her supper. She eat the bird and then had the head ache. Fannie went to Mount Ainy[?] to a party. Halawene they called it. Mrs Anderson & Fanny Hendricks sent Josie some nice flowers today. She has had a lot of nice flowers sent her.
A good day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day. Jim & Nellie went to the barn tonight. Ben went to Mr Edmons. They have a cow choked with a sweet potatoe. I hope she may get it out and not die. This evening Mrs George Hutcherson & Mrs Charley Anderson & Nellie Hendricks come to see Josie. Nettie brought Josie some grapes. Mr Booker & little Carol come. Mr Booker brought pears. I tied my calf but today she broke her collar and had to be put in a gain.
A good day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day. Nellie helped tie. Bettie ironed some today. I got most of the dinner. Bettie d[r]essed a chicken for me. I churned. The children went to school. Henry come by Lees and got some beef. He got to ride most of the way. Mollie Reynols come to see Josie today. Last night one of Mr Edmons cows got choked with a sweet potatoe. Lee & Ben went down there. They cut in to her swallow and got out the potatoe. The cow is getting on Ok they hope. Mabel is trying her self tonight.
A good day. Ben & Jim finished stripping Bens cureing of tobacco. Ben & Henry and Fannie went to Kate Harveys tonight. Jim tied my calf for me today. Denia come to see Josie this evening. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. Alcie Collans made some soap today. Bettie ironed most of the day. I got dinner. We had some nice beef. Henry caught a rabbit in his trap this morning. Nellie finished Carries babys cloak today.
A good day cloudy part of the day. Jim stripped tobacco this morning. Nellie tied. Ben & Henry went to Kates and got some tobacco and put it in the pit. Jim come but would not stay and eat dinner. Thsi evening Ben carried Betty part of the way home. I went as far as Cedar Forest. I fished some. Caught three small fish. Mr Power sent Josie some birds ready to cook. I am glad of them to give her. Fanny Power has gone to Mrs Grave.. to night. Mr Orval Gravely[?] come for her.
A good day cloudy but no rain. We all was at home for dinner. Henry went to Johnson Reynols this evening. Nellie & I got dinner. We had nice beef to cook. Josie has not suffered as bad as usual. Today Fanny Power went to church & home. I hope she is coming back to night. Jim & Ben & Henry is at the barn loading the waggon with tobacco. They want to start to Grena in the morning. I hope they may get off Ok.
A good day. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco. Nellie churned and washed the dishes for me. I got the dinner. Ben & Henry started to Gretna before day this morning. They got home a little before night. Ben was very well pleased with the sale of his tobacco. He solde a little for Kate. Mr Lewis brought Josie some good apples this evening. Mrs Booker sent her some light bread & cake and some beautiful flowers. Fanny brought them last night. Edna & Franklin went to school.
A cloudy day and a little rain. Ben went to the Election and served as judge. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco. John Hutchersons bull got in and got to the haystacks. Did not do any damage. Our cows got in Norman Bookers field. Jim got them out and fixed the fence. I got dinner. This evening I hulled walnuts. Mabel stayed with me at the shop. I did not go to vote. I had no way to go. Several ladies did vote.
A good day some cooler than yesterdy. Ben disked some land to sowingness. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco. It was not in good order. Mollie come down here a while this morning. She would not stay for dinner. I went to Renan this evening. Nat Wooding carried me most of the way over there. I walked home.
Josie has suffered a lot today. I got dinner. Nel churned. The children went to school. I started Carrie a letter today. Nellie got a letter from Evylin to day. I was glad. She wanted to hear so bad.
A good day. Ben sowed some grass seed. Jim & Nellie stripped tobacco. Nellie helped me this morning. I milked two cows and one was not up. I hunted for her but did not find her. Jim found her in Mr Bookers field. Josie has suffered a lot today. Mr Irvin Lewis sent Josie a nice box of grapes by mail today. Mr Dews come tonight and paid Mrs Car some mony. Fannie Power and I ironed some this evening. I am so glad that it is done. I s[t]arched some clothes this evening.
A clear cool day. Ben hunted a little wood this evening. Ella & Loucas Hubbard come her this evening. Mr Kent come tonight. She brought Josie some [oiters?]. I am glad that she did. They will be something that she has not had Jim & Nellie worked on their tobacco all day. I ironed some & Fanny ironed some so we got all the things done. The children went to school. Henry went to the ball game. I got a letter from Carrie. I was glad. Jim got a letter from John. I was glad to hear from him.
A beautiful day. Jim finished stripping a curing of tobacco today. Ben loaded on Kate's tobacco this evening. Mrs Booker and Ruth Booker come to see Josie this evening. Jessie Power come to see her today. Norman Booker killed a calf this morning. Ben helped him and got a part of the calf. Fannie Power went to Gretna this evening. She went with Jamie Gravely & her [beau?]. Ruth Booker brought some apples this evening. I got dinner. Had chicken & Beef. Ben & Henry has gone hunting.
A good day. We all was at home for dinner. Mrs Hubbard & Mrs Power was here. Mr Sam Hubbard come for them while we were at dinner. Carrie & Marvin and all the children except Reese Henry went to Sunday School. Mr Anderson come for Miss Fannie Power and carried her to church. Ben & Jim & Henry has gone to load some tobacco. Nellie tried to persuade then to wait until morning but I think it suited Jim best to load tonight. I am glad that Josie's sisters come to see her. Want them to come every time they can.
A good day. Ben shucked corn all day. Jim went to Gretna with tobacco. He has not come home yet. Nellie got a present from Evylin today. A work bag. Virginia Harvey spent the day here with Fannie Power. I was glad that she come. The children went to school. Hettie washed here today. I churned & and got dinner. I wanted to go to the mill & fish a while & get some [brand] but Ben talked so belittling a bout it. Would not go. I am not as good as a servant should be. Ben dont know how much I wait on him and his crowd.
A good day. Ben & Jim shucked corn this morning. This evening Jim went to the mill. He carried wheat did not get it ground. He brought 1000 weight of brand. Mabel and I went with him. Nellie milked the cows. Fannie got supper. Ben watered the calf after dark. Fannie Power went to Renan. We had cabbage for dinner and enjoyed them. Nellie is busy making a dress for a little girl in Charlottesville. Some one sent Josie a box of flowers by mail today. Mollie Reynols come today. I would of bin glad to see her.
A cloudy morning rain this evening. Jim & Ben shucked corn all the morning. This evening they could not do much of any thing. I finished hulling walnuts.
Hattie finished getting out peas and we divided them. Launa Davis (col) come here for some [...?] for her sick son. I got dinner. Nellie sowed. Fannie ironed some this morning. Henry come by Mr Booker and got some apples. Ben & Jim went to Renan to night. They will have a mudy walke. The wind is bowing to night.
A good day. Ben & Jim shucked corn all the morning. This evening Ben went to Gretna. Fanny [..?] and I went with him. He had a puncture. Stuck a nail through his tire. He had good luck mending it. We made the trip ok. I bought a few thing. Among them a sweater for Edna. Jim went to Mr Steven [Dais's?]. I got dinner & churned. The children went to school. Josie did not suffer very much today. No one come to see her today. Mabel staid with Nellie this evening. She has bin happy with her waggon today.
A good day. The boys hauled up stalks and corn. Very glad they have got as much as they have. Nellie sewed some. She washed the dishes and fixed the milk ready to churn. Fannie ironed. I got dinner. We had cabbage. They were a rarity. Josie has suffered a lot today. Mrs Lewis sent her some nice fruit this evening. The people send her some thing nearly every day. Fannie has started to [?] Gladis to a school entertainment. George Blair come for her. I want to see all of my children so bad but cant.

It is a wonder that he was not kill. He was not hurt much. Broke his watch all to pieces. Mrs. Booker and Mrs Kelie come to see Josie this evening. Mr. Kellie come for them. Mrs Rufus Carr sent Josie some birds. Ben and Jim and Henry went to Strait Stone for some barrels. They got them. Fannie went to Kates this evening to spend the night. Hattie cleaned the yard some this morning.
A good day. Rain last night. Jim and Ben staid at home. Mr. Fletcher Carr and his wife and Rufus and his family come. Rufus's wife brought Josie dinner. Part of a wild turkey. Several other things. Kate Harvey and Julia Fergerson come a little while. Mr. Tom Wooding died today. They sent for Jim and Ben. They had company and did not go until late. Ben is there now. Nellie and I got dinner. Josie has not suffered so much today. I feel worried about every thing. Got the blues I guess.
A good day colde tonight. Ben helped dig a grave for Mr Tom Wooding. Jim went this evening and helped to burie him. Norman Booker carried Miss Fanny Power and I. He brought me home. Fanny & Jamie come with some one else. Mr Fletcher Car and Mrs Car are here tonight.
Nellie & I got dinner. Nellie & Mrs Lelia Carr washed dishes. Henry went to Johnson Reynols and got some beef this evening. I am glad to have some thing to cook. Hattie washed here to day.

Have just got back here tonight. Nellie has helped me and sewed some. Ben & Jim got the Turkey in the hen house tonight. Edna said she would tell me something to write. She said that Alice Massa was married last Sat. Johnson Reynols & wife went to Chatham today . I could of went but was crowded out by company.
A very windy. Ben & Jim cut wood until dinner. Then they killed 15 turkey. Nellie & I helped tp pick them. Denia Blair come to see Josie this evening. Fletcher Car & his mother & wife went to Mr Dews & Mr Powers this evening. Mrs Lelia Car & Nellie got supper & washed dishes to night. I did not milk tonight. It was was late when we come from the spring. We had a big frost. The children went to school. Lelia Car ironed some this morning.
A good day. Ben went to Gretna this morning & Nel went with him. He carried the turkeys that we picked yesterday. Got home by ten oclock. Nel got most of the dinner. I churned. Jim cut wood in the woods. Ben hauled wood this evening. This morning Mr Fletcher Car & Mrs Car & Fanny Power went to Jim Powers and spent the day. Got back about dark. Nellie got supper tonight. Jim & Ben has gone to Renan to help Irvin Harvey load on some tobacco. I hope he may do well[with it?].
A good day. Ben & Jim hauled wood. They had Mr Bookers team. Irvin Harvey had our horses and went to Gretna with tobacco. Mr Fletcher Car went to Chatham. His mother wife and I went with him. We had a good trip. Come home for dinner. Nellie got dinner and churned. Carrie & Marvin and three of the children come a little while. I was very glad to see them. Denia Blair & Sallie come by here going to see Mrs Trent. I would of bin glad to see them.
A colde windy day. Jim & Ben hauled wood this morning and sawed wood all evening. Mr & Mrs. Carr left home this morning for Long Island and then they would start for Home at Jewel Ridge Va. I certainly did enjoy their stay here. Mollie and Robert Reynols come a few minutes this morning. Robert is looking well. I was glad that they come Hattie Gilbent washed a little here this morning. Tonight is very colde. The coldest of this fall. Oh how I do dread the winter but it will soon be well over.
A clear colde day. We all eat dinner at home today. Henry went to Sunday School this morning. Nellie baked a cake this morning. I fried beef steak. Fannie stewed oisters and I thought we had a nice dinnner.
Lee & Grace Brumfield come to Mr Norman Bookers this evening. Grace & Ruth come to see Josie this evening. Grace brought Josie some beautiful flowers. Josie has felt mighty bad all day today.
This morning it was snowing. The first snow of this winter. It has bin cloudy all day. Jim & Ben put some tobacco in the pit & helped Norman Booker get some down on the ground tier. This evening Ben carried Fannie home. I hope she wont stay long at home. Josie & her Grandma need her so bad. Ben heard from the turkeys. They solde well. Edna come home with the head ache & sore throat. I hope she will not be sick. Mabel cut off the dolles hair today.
A colde day for Nov. Ben & Jim worked on tobacco some today. It was two dry so they could not do much with it. Hattie washed here today. I got dinner Nellie sewed some. Josie has felt very bad today. The children went to school. Ben went to Renan for stove pipe. Could not get it. Jim had a letter from John today. Nellie heard from Evylin to day. I killed & dressed a turkey. Want to cook it for Thanksgiving.

Kate Harvey come to see Josie to day. The children went to school. Will not go any more until Monday. Several of the neighbors killed hogs today. Josie has not suffered so much today as she did yesterday. Ben & Jim went to the barns tonight to tie tobacco.
A clear good day. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco all day. Henry and Edna went to Mr George Eemersons to a birth day party. Lawsons birth day. They had a fine time. Julia Emerson come with them home. Cordie Blair come to see Aunt Jo this evening. Josie has suffered awful this evening. Heard today that Mr Rufus Car got his finger cut very bad sawing wood. I got dinner. Had a turkey for dinner. We all enjoyed it very much. Fannie thought Hellen was comeing to stay until bed time. Billie Emerson & Henry & B & Lawson Emerson has gone hunting.

Mr Bennett & Earl come by for her tonight. I was glad she come Mrs Hubbard sent Josie a nice box of good things to eat by mail. Nellie washed some for her self this morning. Fannie ironed some this evening. Josie has not suffered so bad today. Julia Emerson went from here this morning.
A good day. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco. Henry shucked a littl corn. Elie & Lewis [?] shucked one shock and got up the corn & stalks. Elie went to the store for me. Fanny Power went to George Blairs tonight. They have a lot of young company there tonight. The Bennetts come down this evening Lizzie sent me a nice peice of beef. I am so glad of it. Glad to be remembered. I had a letter from Carrie this evening. I was so glad to hear from her. Wish I could see them all. Mollie come to see Josie this evening.
A good day. We were all at home at dinner. Henry went to Sunday School. This evening Ben & Jim and Henry went to Lees. I sent some butter. Hellen will sell it at Altavista. I got dinner. Roasted two chickens. Late this evening Carrie & Kate and Reese & [Juilia?] was with them come. Carrie eat dinner with Kate. I wish I could of bin with them. Dr Wigginton & Pearl was at Kates. Hattie gil[Gilbert?] col)[coloured girl]come & helped to straiten up things this morning. Edna & Franklin & Mabel has gone to bed.
A raining tonight. The boys finished stripping Bens cureing of tobacco and put some of Jims in the pit. The children went to school. Nellie & I got dinner. Hattie Gilbert washed and all of the clothes is on the garden fence. Josie has suffered a lot today. Nellie heard from Evylin today. I planted a few little bulbs today. Ben and Norman Booker wanted to start to Gretna in the morning but they could not load their tobacco so they cant go. Our cows got in Booker field this morning. Jim got them out.
A good day. Ben & Mr Booker put their tobacco on the waggon and started to Gretna a bout 10 oclock. Nellie & Henry has gone to Mr Bookers to stay until he comes home. Jim is tying tobacco by him self. Nellie tied tobacco this evening. I got dinner. Nellie sewed a little this morning. I starched the clothes. This evening Mabel and I [shelled?] some corn. This evening I started a letter to Effie Brumfield. Jamie Gravely stopped to see Josie this morning. Edna got a letter from Virginia Wooding today.
A good day. Jim stripped tobacco. Ben carried Mrs Car to Long Island. She intends going to Lynchley[?]. I hope she may keep well and come back soon. Fanny is taking care of Josie. Nellie sent a box to Evylin today. I got a snack to eat for dinner. I ironed most of the evening. Denia Blair sent Mabel some papers to cut up and a bag of rags that Mrs Anderson sent for Josie. Henry caught a rabbit this morning. I was glad of it.
A rainy day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco. The children went to school. Henry went to a ball game at [...ting?]. Went with Lawson Emerson. Nellie ironed some this morning. I ironed this evening. Finished what was to do. Nellie & I got dinner. I milked tonight & Nellie & Edna got supper. Nel let Edna make the bread for supper. It was good. Fannie has bin with Josie all day. Mrs Car has not come yet. Guess it will be a day or two yet before she comes. We will be glad when she comes.
A good day. Ben & Jim worked on the tobacco most of the day. This evening Ben went to the island to meet Mrs Car. She had come from [Lynchburg?]. Mabel and I went with him. We staid at Peaks store while Ben went to Mr Cars for Mrs Car. I went to see Mrs Hutcherson this evening. She is very sick. She had a lot of company. Mr Walter Car sent Josie a big fish by mail this evening. She eat some of it for supper.

Nellie and I got dinner. Edna & Franklin went to Mr Hutchersons this morning. Mrs Mayhew & [Audna?] passed here today. They had bin to see Mrs Hutcherson. Johnson Reynols come here today looking for his dog. They hunted some down here yesterday. He brought Josie two birds.

He carried me to the sand clay road. I walked the rest of the way. Johnson brought me home. I had a good visit. Posie & Kate was there. Nellie & I got dinner. I cooked a chicken. Nellie baked a cake. It was fine. [Ren?] & Ethel Worsham come to see us. I am sorrie not to have seen them. Hope they will come a gain soon. Good night.
A colde cloudy day. Jim & Ben and Mr Booker and Claud Edmons & a darkey killed our hogs & Mr Bookers. Ellen Lewis & Hattie Gilbert helped. Ellen helped Mrs Booker. We got on fine. Did not try to work on the meat tonight. Nellie got dinner. She cooked birds and a rabbit. We had pork for supper. I got a letter from Carrie today. I am always so glad to hear from them. Wish I could go up there once more. Mrs Car gave me a peice of goods to make me a dress. I think it is pretty. That is a Xmas gift. Wish it was made.

Nellie and Fanny ground the sausage meat and made the sausage. That was a great help. I dried out the [?]. Worked at the wash house all the evening. I am so glad that much is done. The children went to school. Franklin come home complaining but he is Ok now as far as I can tell.
A cloudy cold day. Jim went to Gretna with tobacco. Started before day. Did not sell. He came home & brought the team. Ben got Mr Bookers team and went to the mill. I am so glad that he did go as we was out of flour & cornmeal. Josie has bin pent all day. Fanny & Mrs Car has worked on Mrs Cars dress some today. Nellie & I got dinner. Hattie Gilbert(col) washed here today. Henry turned over a churn of milk this morning be for he started to school.
A very bad day colde and raining. Jim went to Gretna with [Thellbert?] Edmons. He solde his tobacco and got home before night. Ben helped Mr Edmons kill his hogs today. Nellie got dinner & churned. I cleaned the hogs heads & feet. I am very glad that is done. Mrs Car sewed on her dress to day. Josie has bin quiet today. The children went to school. They are talking tonight so that you cant hear no one but them.

Jim carried the things home that we had borrowed. I am glad that is done. Josie got Ednas & Mabels dresses that she had ordered. They are very pretty. Ben bought goods to make Edna some gowns. I have rocked little Mabel to sleep and put her in bed. she is so petted that she dont know what to do with her self.
A cloudy bad day. No rain to hinder work. Ben & Jim sawed wood for Mr Booker. They eat dinner there. Ben said he did enjoy the beans. I cooked some big sweet potatoes. Boiled hogs feet. The children got in some wood. Henry went to the store & got a can of oil. Heard today that Mrs Hurcherson is very sick. Also heard that Mrs Compton & Mr Compton are sick. I hope they all may be better soon. Ben & Jim hunted just at night. Ben killed one rabbit.
A very bad day. We all staid at home all day. Nellie & I got dinner. Nel baked potato pies. I cooked cabbage & back bones. Nellie churned. I fixed up the butter. Johnson come here a while. He was talkeing a bout fixing for Xmas. I done want to fix much but will do the best I can. Jim went to John Hubbards he said to see about getting a goat. He said it was dead. I did not want it here any way.
A cloudy day. Ben & Jim shucked some corn. Hunted a little then went to Strait Stone & home before night. Nellie made Edna two gowns. She is sleeping in one tonight. Nellie washed two hams this evening one for me & one for her self. I cooked meat & made scrapple this evening. I boiled the chidlings at the wash house today. Denia Blair come to see us this evening. Carlton Daniels & Rufus Car come up here to see Mrs Car this evening.
A clear colde day. Snowed a little last night. Jim has bin a round home most of the day. He put the pea hulls in sacks this morning. Ben & Fanny Power went to Gretna this morning and to Dunvill on the train. I got dinner. Nellie made beds & swept the floors. Josie has bin quiet most of the day. Mrs Car has stayed by her most of the day. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. The clothes did not get dry.

A cloudy dreary day but no falling weather. Jim stayed a round home most of the day. Ben moved in a hand. John Ward. He was until dark getting home. Then he carried Fanny Power and the children to the school house to a play. Nellie baked two cakes & Fanny one and made some pies. Fanny ironed some/ The cloths was not dry eneough to iron good. I mended Edna's coat this morning & churned and fixed up the butter this evening. Josie has suffered bad today. I had a letter from Carrie today. It is very colde tonight too.
A colde clear day. A little rain last night and a sleet this morning. Ben went to Gretna. He carried a barrel of things for Jim to ship to Evylin at Charlottesville. Nellie started to see Evylin this morning. Ben carried Fanny home this evening. We will miss them very much. Heard tonight that Mrs Hutcherson is very sick. Ernest Craddock & family moved to this neighbor hood today. I hope they will never regret it. Jim went to Gretna with Ben this evening. He put up the fence a round the hog lot.
A good day. Ben & Jim sawed wood for Kate. I am glad that they did. I have bin busy all day and done very little. I got dinner. Mrs Car picked the salit yesterday. I got a present of a nice fruit cake. Effie Brumfield sent it. I got a card from Thelma Brumfield. I am always glad to hear from them. Jim has gone to Hutchersons to hear from Mrs Hutcherson.
A good day. Ben made a dog house & worked on a lounge in the parlor the rest of the day. I boiled a ham to day. I got dinner & churned. Washed the babys cap & two cloaks and ironed some. The mail brought several presents for Josie from Miss Bessie Hobson. Thelma sent things and a box of candy for me. The boys caught a possome to night. They give it to John Ward.
A beautiful day. We were all at home for dinner. Henry went to Sunday School & to Johnson Reynols. No one come to see us today. Josie has felt bad today. I got dinner. I did not go to the spring. Jim & Henry brought some water. Etta Gilbert brought 4 buckets full. I dress two chickens. Henry caught a rabbit. He skned that. Johnson Reynols brought Josie some grapefruit & boiled ham this evening. Edna & Franklin brought the water for tonight.
A beautiful day. We were all at home for dinner. Jim & Ben helped dig Mrs Hutchersons grave. Marvin & Carrie & all the children come a little while today. Marvin & Carrie and Reese went to the burial. I did see a lot of people that I knew. I was glad to seem all. Would like to go to Johnsons while the children are at home but guess I cant go. Mrs Car got a nice box from Fletcher. Ethel [W...?] gave me a nice box this evening. Wish I could see all of my folks this Xmas. Guess I cant see many of them.
A beautiful day. The boys hunted some. We had no company until about night then Bruce Reynolds and his wife & Julia & Mildred Fergerson come a little while. I got dinner and churned then milked the cows. Did not get any supper. George Barber and Earnest Pool had trouble. Barber drove into Pools buggy. Did not hurt any one much. The horse ran away. I hope they may settle with out a fuss. Henry has gone to Reynols tonight.
A good morning again. This evening we were all at home except Henry. He was at Reynols. This evening Ben and Jim went to Altavista. Jim wanted to get his teeth pulled. The dentist was not in town. They got home about dark. Jim has gone to Mr. Bookers to hear about Pools and Barbers troubles. I got dinner and churned and milked morning & evening. Mrs Booker came to see Josie this evening. Went home through the rain. I fed the horses and hogs for the first time this year and I guess it will be the last.
A rainy bad day most of the day. The wind is blowing tonight. Were all at home at dinner except Jim. I got dinner & churned. Milked morning and evening. Henry went to Mount Amy this morning. Mrs. Booker and Ethel Wooding and Elsie East come to see Josie a few minutes today. Josie has bin feeling bad today. I have seen people moveing today. They had six one horse wagons. The most I had seen in a long time. Dont know who they were that was moveing. They had a bad time for it.
A good day. Jim hunted some today. Ben made some steps to the house in the wood. This evening he carried John (the col man) and his family to Cedar Forest. He got in the mud as he come home and had to prize the car out. Ella Hubbard come this morning and Kate [?] and Lizzie and Lonnie and Alma Bennett. I was glad to see all of them. A good day. I got breakfast. Fried birds and made chicken hash. Ella Hubbard and Lizzie Bennett was here. Lizzie went home before dinner. Lonnie come for her. Isla Blair come and brought Josie a box of good things to eat. It was very nice. Ella went home right after dinner. George Hutcherson come for her. Ben went to see Ken Adkins, he has been very sick but is better now. Henry went to Mr [Milans?] this morning and a boy came home with him that goes to school at Chatham come home with the [Milan?] boy and Floid R.
365 Sunday, Dec. 31, 1922 A colde cloudy day - no weather Ben & Jim went to Mr Bookers before breakfast Jim fed his stock and Ben milked his cows. Mr Booker & family was at Mrs Jacksons. The cubian[?] went away this morning. Ernest & Lottie Craddock and Johnson and Posie & Bruce & his wife and Alice Thomson come to see Josie this morning. This evening Lee & Grace Brumfield & Carles and Virginia Harvey come to see her. Well time is what I want.
