Monday, January 1, 1923
A good day. We eat three meals to day. Ben commenced to strip tobacco this morning. Henry went hunting & to the store this morning.
Mrs Car did not eat any breakfast this morning.
Josie is very bad off.
The children are at the dining room trying to play the fiddle & banjo.
I have bein very busy to day no one to help me except what Edna does. She brought all the water for tonight and wiped the dishes for me.
Well I have commenced in my new book and hope I may live to finis[h] it.

A good day Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day execpt a little while this morning Ben started to Gretna before light for medicine for Josie he got Home by 9 oclock.
The children went to School Edna is complaining tonight I had a postal from Carrie saying that all of them had bin sick but Marvin. I hope they are better by now
Josie has been bad off all day. Mrs. Kellie & Mrs. Blair come to see Josie They brought her several nice things.
Mollie Reynols come a little while. She gave me a nice pin that she & Julia sought for me & am I proud of it. Hattie washed here today I am glad of that. I have bin busy all day.

A cloudy day again this evening The boys stripped tobacco. The children went to school; come home nearly wet. Josie has not suffered so much today as she did yesterday.
Jim and Ben had bad colds I hope they wont get sick. We heard today that Sam Owen family has flue. There is a lot of sickness a bout. I have bin busy most all day. Done all the cooking that has been done. Milked & churned dried clothes by the fire There have not been any one to see Josie. Today I got a letter from Elsie Brumfield this evening I want to hear from Carrie's folks so bad.

A colde day partly cloud. Jim and Ben stripped tobacco There has not an automobile passed here today. Mrs. Booker come a few minutes this evening. The children went to school Josie has bin easy most of the time Today Mabel put on shoes and stockings Etta Gilbert come this morning She washed the dishes and swept the floors That was a lot of help to me milked and churned cooked dinner washed dishes and then ?oded a while Then ironed some I am so anxious to hear from Marvin's folks and want to hear from Nellie I am a fraid some of them are sick There is so much sickness about now

A beautiful day The boys strpped tomacco Mr Booker helped them This evening Josie has been bad off all day. Mrs Booker cooked and brought her dinner She eat what she could and was glad of it. Kate Harvey come to see me today I was very glad that she come. Etta Gilbert helped me was dishes this morning Kate washed them at dinner and Henry helped me tonight I had the longest nest this evening that I have had this year Kate churned I worked the butter and ???nted it The children went to school Harvey got in wood and Edna brought water. A cloudy day. Rain tonight. Jim went to John Hutchensons and eat dinner. Henry went to Sunday school and from there to Jim Power(?). Grace Brumfield come today and brought Josie some custard and nice boiled meat. She helped me get dinner. Josie is very bad off tonight. Grace staid all night. Grace is very helpful. Fanny Power(?) come tonight (?). I was glad to see Fanny. There is a lot of sickness a round at this time. A darkey at Ren(?) Worshams died last night.
Ben and I picked some salit from the garden today. I made some soup for dinner today.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco. Grace staied all night. She walked part of the way home. Kate Harvey come and staid with us most of the day. Demia? Blair come a while. Nellie come home today. We were all glad that they all come.
Jose has been bad off all day.
John Ward wife come here this morning (colored people). She carried some clothes home to iron. Etta Gilbert come. She washed dishes and swept the floor for me. I sent some butter to Elise East today. Hope she may sell it for me.

A changable day. The wind is blowing tonight and colde. The men folks stripped tobacco all day. Ben] has been complaining all day. Hattie] washed today. Josie is very bad off tonight. Ella] come today. Mollie] & Johnson] come a while this morning. Nellie] and I got dinner. Nel sewed some this evening. I ironed a little. The children went to school. I do want to hear from Carrie] and her folks so bad. Wish I could go up there a little while. Edna] and Franklin] has gone to bed half past seven o'clock.

A very colde day. Ben and Jim finished stripping tobacco today. The children went to school. Josie has bin very bad off all day. Ella is here with her yet. Nellie and I got a snack to eat. Nellie sewed all the time she could get from her other work. Letia Ward brought our clothes home ironed nice. That is a help. No one has come today. It has bin so colde that no one would go out more than they were oblidged to. Ben went to Dr. Owens ? to night for tablets ? The last that Josie will ever need I think.

A good day. Ben and Jim worked at the barn until dinner. Then Jim went to the mill. He got home by night. Ben split some wood for the range. Then went to Renan. Nellie sent Evylin a dress by mail. Ella went home this evening. Mr Henelme ??? come for her on his car. Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie & Fanny washed dishes at dinner tonight. Josie has suffered a lot today. Mrs. Kent come to see her this evening. Norman Booker went to Gretna this morning. He offered to bring any thing I wanted. I think he was was very kind to offer so much. Maybel (?) has bein une? good today.

A good day. Ben & Jim hauled some wood and cut it with John Ward and Mr. Booker helped them. Mollie Reynolds come this morning and again this evening. She brought cake and pickle. I boiled two hams to day and had two hens cleaned. Lillian Kent come to see Josie today. Josie has bin very bad all day. Nellie washed and dressed Mabel (?) today. She has bin good today. Today the children went to School. Heared today over the phone that Ola Jefferson's boy was very sick. I am so sorry for them. I never heared of more sickness in my life. I don't think it is God's will. I wish they all could get well.

A good day. The men folks shucked a little corn. Josie has suffered awful today. Ben went to see the dr. this evening and got medicine for her. Mollie Reynolds staid here last night and all day today. Lillian Kent spent the night. Denia Blair came this evening. I have taken things easy to day. Henry went to the store this evening. This morning I saw a hawk catch a hen. I called Ben. He got the gun and shot and killed the hawk. The hen was not much hurt. I let John Ward have a hen this evening. I am so anxious a bout ??? boy. Hope he may get well.

A cloudy day. Rain tonight. Josie died this morning 20 minutes after three oclock. Denia and Mollie and Kate Mrs. Booker Mrs Edmonds & Mrs. Kent was here. They all done what they could to help about what was to be done. Jim Johnson went to Gretna and got a casket a very nice one. There has bin several here today. Two preachers Mr. Hogan and Mr. Jenings(?) ??? and Otho and Sallie and Mrs. Thomson are here tonight. Oscar Eade and Hellen and Doris Brumfield come tonight and brought flowers. Mrs. Car ? has been upstairs most of the day. Heard tonight that Olas boy is better. Hope he may get well. Carrie and Reese and the baby come 15 until 8 oclock.

A clear colde day. The neighbors has bin oh so kind to Ben. They helped to burie Josie. There was a big crowd for the weather and so much sickness a bout. Mollie and Kate helped cook dinner. Mollie gave me a nice cake and two jars of pickles. No one eat dinner with us but Mr Mayhew and Lee Brumfield. Mr. Bennett & Lizzie and Gordon come while we were eating dinner. They eat with us. I was glad that they come. Marvin and Carrie and three of the children come. Mr. Jennings talked at the grave. They sung several songs. Had the nicest flowers I most ever did see Twenty minutes until 8 o'clock.

A colde windy day. Ben & Jim burned a plant bed today. Nellie & I got dinner. Mrs Carr staid up stairs most of the day. The children went to school. I got a letter from Effie. She writes that there is a lot of sicknesss at Blacks Burg. Hattie washed here today. We have had snow showers today. I have not heard from the sick around here today. Do hope they are better by now. I have mended some things to day. Among them was Edna's cloak. Edna & Mabel both went upstairs tonight with Mrs. Carr.

A clear cold day. Jim and Ben finished burning their plant bed and sowed it. They got seed from Mr. Edmonds. Edmonds? folks are sick with the flue. Nellie washed some today. I got dinner. I cooked a chicken and baked some bread for to send to Mr. Owen's people. Their little boy died today. Mrs Owen has pneumonia. I do hope that she may get well. Ben has gone to Owens tonight. Mrs Carr churned for me a gain today. Mabel & Edna has gone with Mrs. Carr upstairs. Edna has come back. Today has been the coldest day of the winter.

A colde windy day. Ben loaded his tobacco on the waggon this morning and started for Gretna this evening. Intends to stay at Marvin's tonight. I hope it will not rain while he is gone. Nellie ironed some this morning. I got dinner and churned. Mr. McEray ?? come here this morning. Mrs Carr did not come down stairs until twelve o'clock. She had a head ache. The children went to school. I am so near asleep that I can't write.

A good day. Jim and John Ward burned a plant bed. Ben come from Gretna. He solde his last tobacco today. he is very well pleased with the price. He staid at Marvin Smiths last night. Kate and Irvin come a little while this evening. Nellie sewed on Evylin's aprons this evening. Edna brought water tonight. Mrs Carr got a good mess of salit today. We certainly did enjoy it. I baked sweet potatoes for the children to eat when they come home from school. Ben brought some apples from Gretna.

A rainy evening. Ben and Jim finished their plant bed today at twelve o'clock. There is sickness at most every home around here at this time. Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie washed dishes. Henry went to Renan for soda for the plant beds. Nellie made Evyline an apron to day. Lelia Ward brought the clothes home this evening. I went to sleep and marked my book. Letia Ward brought the clothes home this evening.

A bad day, cloudy and windy. We all staid at home until dinner. Jim and Ben went to Mr. Edmons to see the boys that is sick. They found Mrs. Edmons sick. I am very sorry for them. Effie & Hellen and Doris and Gladis Brumfield come down here this evening. They did not stay long. They carried some butter for me to Altivista. Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie washed dishes. Mrs. Carr did not come down until dinner. Henry went to Lees a while this evening. He got home at supper time.

A bad day. Rained some. Today was the day that the farmers got their 2nd pay ? for their tobacco. Ben and Jim and Mrs. Carr and I went to Gretna. Mrs Carr went to Lynchburg. Ben carried me to Marvin Smith's. I was glad to see Carrie and the children. The boys staid at Gretna most all day. They got their pay. We got home by night. Nellie staid home with Mabel. Nellie said Mabel did fine. She got time to sew a lot. Nellie had a nice supper for us. We heard today that Mrs. John Mayhew died this morning. There was a big crowd at Gretna today, all anxious for their money. All are well here tonight.

A colde cloudy day. The boys got wood today. Nellie got dinner, fried potatoes and baked bread. Made ginger cakes I enjoyed with the dinner. This evening Nellie staid with Mabel. I went to Reynols. Walked up there and back. Johnson had gone to Danville. Mrs. Cook was there. I did enjoy my vist. While I was there, Mrs. Carr come home from Lynchburg. I was glad that she made the trip. So good we are glad for her to stay with us what she will. Mollie walked with me as far as Bookers Barn. Mrs. Carr brought the children some presents. (?)

Snowed last night and this morning. The land is covered with snow tonight but it is warmer now than yesterday. The men could not do much of anything to day. Ben went to Renan. Jim went to Mr. Bookers. There is some one sick at nearly every house. Earl Bennett was here today about fertilizer. Nellie got a letter from Evyline. She is sick and Nellie is so distressed she did not eat any supper. I am sorry for her but can't do any thing that would do any good. Henry and Edna went to school. Franklin and Mabel has had a good time today. I finished Carries quilt ready to quilt to night. I set a hen today.

A clear day. Snow melted all day. Ben painted some in his room. Jim made Nellie a table. Nellie got dinner. Mrs. Carr kept Mabel. I went to Johnson Reynols. He come for me and brought me home on his buggy. Mrs Cook and Kate Hubband & Kate Harvey and I was there for dinner. They had a good dinner. Jim thomson & Alec & some of the children were all sick. Dr. Owens baby childe is seriously sick. Jim Farthings has a new baby at his house. Kate Harvey combed my hair today.

A good day. Ben and Jim went to Gretna on Mr. Bookers car. Jim went on to Chatham. Ben come home. Nellie got Dinner. I went to George Blairs. I walked over there. George Jr. brought me home. I was glad that he did. Mrs. Carr has bin complaining all day. Mabel has a bad colde. Heard today that Alice Thomson is very sick. I do hope that she may get well. Dr. Owens childe is better so we heard. There is more sickness in the country than can be attended to. I do hope that there will soon be a change for the better. Co??? combed my hair today.

A bad day. Cloudy and raining tonight. Ben painted some today. Jim come from Gretna today. He staid with Marvin last night. He went to Chatham yesterday. Nellie and I got dinner today. Letia Ward brought the clothes home today. Heard from Alice Thomson tonight. She is very sick. Ben and the children are in the dining room playing games. Mrs Carr is some better of the headache today I think. She wants to go home tomorrow. Hope it may be so that she can go.

A good day. Jim and Ben went to Johnsons this morning. Alice Thomson died last night half after ten oclock. They brought her to her fathers today. Jim went to Gretna with ??? for the casket. Jim come home for his supper. Ben and Jim has gone up there tonight. Ben carried Mrs Carr home this evening. I will miss her so much. She is a fine lady as fars as I have had the company. I am distressed about so much sickness in the countery. I do hope that it will soon get better. Henry went to Lee Brumfields today. He went with Lawson Emerson.

A good day. Ben and Jim and Nellie staid at Johnson Reynols last night. Ben and Nellie come home for breakfast. Jim staid to help them. Nellie went back up there right after breadfast. Ben went to Mr. Hutchensons sale. Come home and staid with the children while I went to the burial. There was a big crowd present. Mr. Thornhill and Jennings had a few words to say. They had a lot of flowers. They were beautiful. I started up there there walking and met Alma and Earl coming after me. I was very glad. R?? Smith brought Nellie and I home. I was glad he did.

A cloudy day. Ben and Jim hauled wood. Said they had hauled 42 two-horse loads here this winter. Nellie and I got dinner. The children went to school. All of the sick that we heard from was doing well as could be expected. Nellie had a letter from Evylin. She was not well. Wants Nell to come there as soon as she can. Lelia Ward come and got the clothes to iron. I commenced me a rug by ripping up an old garment. Hope I can work some. Mabel never went to sleep until after 8 oclock. A cloudy day. The men hauled wood all the morning. This evening they sawed wood. Ben says it has bin the longest month that he ever saw. We can't be surprised at that. It has bin a sad time. Josie and Alice both gone. 8 little children motherless children. God will take care of them some way. Nell is is worried most to death a bout her daughter. She can't help it. I am sorry for her and can't do any thing to help her. Nell has done most of the cooking to day. She made some cakes to day. They were fine. Mr. Mayhew is here tonight him and two of his children. They are playing games in the dining room.

A cloudy day. The boys finished sawing wood by twelve oclock. Cleaned out the stables this evening. Boy Barbers wife was buried this evening. No one from here did not go to the burial. Nellie got dinner. Then sewed on her quilt. I cut up the stair way carpet and will make rugs of it. Lelia sent the clothes home by John. They were done very good. The children went to school. Edna got a letter from Aunt Ella today. Mabel has been very good for her. Tonight she was running after a wheel and hurt her self. Did not any supper.[sic]

A clear morning. Cloudy all the evening and raining tonight. Very warm for the time of year. Ben hauled in leaves for bedding the horses. Jim helped. Nellie kept house, got dinner and kept Mabel. Mabel lives Nellie and Jim all she knows how. Irvin Harvey come and got me and brought me home. Kate Harvey is sick. She is not in bed but I am a fraid she will have to be. Certainly hope not. The children went to school. Come home through the rain. Ben painted some this evening. Hope he may finish soon. Edna got a letter today.

Rain a gain today. Jim hung up the meat today. Ben painted most of the day. I think he done a good job. Nellie cleaned up some. I got dinner except corn bread. I put feathers in some pillow ticks and a bolster. Nellie washed her dress today. Mrs Carr sent Mabel dresses and two shirts by mail today. Nellie bathed her and put some of them on her. Henry went to Mt. Airy and Renan today. There is lots of sickness yet. There was a ??? carried by her today. A Mrs. Waller I do hope that time will get better soon.

Snowed most of the day. The men folks did not work much. Ben varnished his furniture. Nellie done the cooking and sewed on my rugs. Finished them tonight. Dr. Willie B[rumfield?] was here today a little while. Kate Harvey they hope is some better. Irvin and Duepney(?) come this evening and got the cot for to put in Kate's room. I got a letter from Mrs. Carr this evening.

A bad day. Snowed some today. Ben worked on picture frames. Jim made fires until dinner. Then he went to Renan and to Bookers. They think that Kate is better. Hope so. Any way there is more sickness than I ever knowed. Heard today that there was 22 persons on Mr. Less Bookers place sick.
Henry went to school. They had very few pupils. Nellie done most of the cooking. I sewed a little. I milked yesterday and today Edna helped me. She milked one cow. They baby has bin very cross yesterday and today. Nat Wooding did not come by here today.

A good day as to weather. Plenty of snow on the groun. The children Henry and Edna went to school. Jim and Ben went to Renan. They walked. John come to see us tonight. I am glad that he came. Heard that Kate is getting on well they think. Jack Harvey is at home to see his mother. Nellie made the baby a dress today and done the cooking. Julia's children are sick and Jack Junior is sick. I do hope that the people will soon be well.

Cloudy most of the day. Jim smoked the meat. John went from here this evening. Ben went to Lee Brumfields. Helped strip tobacco. Oscar Brumfield went to Gretna with tobacco. Ben come by Kates. She was not so well. I hope that she may get well yet. John Brumfield went to see Denia Blair. She is very much complaining. Henry and Edna went to school. Terable walking they say. Nellie has done the most that has been done today. She milked two cows this morning while I milked one. I churned and fixed the butter. Have mended a few things today.

A cloudy day warmer. Ben washed up his room floor. He was nearly all day about it. Jim kept a good fire in the dining room and in the smoke house. Said he would not smoke the meat any more. Nellie done the most of the cooking. I have not done much of any thing. Ben went to see Denia. She is not well. Have not heard from Kate today. Wish I had heard. John did not go from Blairs until today. Henry and Edna went to school. Henry went to Mr. Bookers to say all night. Mr. Booker has gone to Less Bookers. They are all sick there. I want to hear from all of the sick folks about.

A cloudy day. The men folks put a lot of wood under the porch. I am glad that it is done. Ben and Henry walked to Straight Stone this evening. Got Edna some overshoes. She is so glad of them. Nellie done most of the cooking. I churned and washed a little for Mabel. Nellie let Mabel go with her to her room this evening. She was so glad to go. Endna and Franklin helped to get in wood. I hope that all of the sick are better and will get well. George Blair come for some work that John Ward had done for him.

A good day. Ben planted some tulips and sweet peeas. Jim walked about in the mud. Nellie went to George Blairs and spent today. I think she enjoyed the day. Henry went to Straightstone to Sunday school. Lawson Emerson come with Henry. They went some where this evening. I got what dinner was got and churned. This has been one lonesome Sunday. Nellie said there was a crowd at Blairs. I wish I could go to Kates and Mollies and to see them all but I can't. The roads is so bad and I am not well.

Cloudy all day. Rain tonight. The boys killed two hogs and John Ward one. Mr. Booker helped them. The children went to school.
Hattie Gilbert washed here some of the the clothes ?? so that we could take them in. Most of the are hanging on the line taking the rain. I got a letter from Mrs. Carr saying that Max had got hurt and wanted he to come to him. I guess she is out there now. I heard from some of the sick today. They were getting on very well. Jack Harvey has gone home. He did not come to see us. I want to see Virginia but can't get there.

A rainy morning. Ben started the engine. We have elect tonight. The first time in a long time. Jim shut up the chickens tonight. He wants to sell some of them soon. Ben went to Renan this evening. Kate is getting on well so they say. There is a lot of sickness yet. I got a letter from Elsie East today.
Mr. Thomson sent here for some butter today. They are all sick except for one or two. Nellie and Jim ground the sausage and made it . I was at the wash house. [??iled] up the lard and cleaned the heads and feet. It was a nasty mean job. The lard is so full of water. It can't be any wetter. I got a valentine today.

A windy day but clear. Jim and Ben cut some wood. Ben Went to Strait Stone and carried some chickens. I cooked meat and made scrapple. Churned and made three pints of butter. Nellie cut Jim some shirts. Mabel has been very good today. Heard that the sick was getting on very well. Mrs. Farmer come to Kates yesterday. Edna got a cake from Emily for a valentine.

A cold day. the coldest of the winter. The men cut wood in the woods. Nellie done most of the cooking. We had back bone for dinner and [?] I have not tried to do anything much today. Mabel [?] [?] good most of the day. Nellie cut out James shirts for him. John Hutchenson is here tonight for the first time this winter. I sent Carrie a letter today.

A clear cold day. The men cut wood in the woods. Nellie washed a little. This morning I got dinner and churned. Ironed a little. Lelia Brought the clothes home that she ironed.
Irvin and Virginia come a little while. I was glad to see Virginia. Mollie Reynolds come. I was so glad that she did come. Johnson come after her on the buggy. Henry and Edna went to school. We did not let Franklin go as it was so cold. 9 oclock. The children has come to go bed. The children has bad colds.

A cold clear day. The men cut wood. Henry went to the store and got oil for the engine. Nellie got dinner. I boiled chitterlings at the wash house. I washed a few clothes. I cut some bed quilt pieces for Kate. I churned. The children has had a time playing most of the day. Edna tried to clean out the spring. She helped it a lot. She dipped some water for me to use about washing. We have not seen anybody today except for Booker. He come to get some help about fixing up his saw. Mabel has gone to sleep. 9:30 oclock

A clear cold day. Ben went to Jim Powers. He walked. Got Home before night. He got a ride part the way home. Henry went to a pond and skated a while. Jim stayed at home most of the day and kept up the fire. Nellie and I got dinner. The little children had to stay in the house and fuss around. I think now I will be so glad when the children can get out of doors.

A good day. The men cut wood for flue wood. Nellie got the dinner. I cut pieces. This evening Nellie went to see Kate. She was sitting up. She come by Reynols. They were getting on very well. Ben and Henry went to Mr. Edmonds tonight. Hattie Gilbert was here today. The children was talking about Washingtons birthday. Caused me to spell [?ong]. Edna and Mabel has gone to bed but keep talking. I am about asleep.

A good day. Ben was at Renan all day judge of electon. Jim went and voted. Irvin come for me. I went and voted. Then went to see Kate. She is very feeble yet. I hope she may get well. I met Mr. [Duepney?] for the first time. He is a nice looking man. Nellie got dinner for the crowd that was here. 21 of us. Edna begged Nellie to make batter bread for supper. It was very nice. A good day. Jim and John cut today. Ben went to Chatham with Odie Kellie. They carried the poll books. Clement was elected. Nellie got dinner. Fried pies and baked tea cakes. She made a scarf for her mother. She got a letter from Evylin. I got a letter from Carrie Smith. Her baby is sick. I went to Johnson Reynols. They were well as usual. Julia Ferguson had gone to see her Aunt Kate. Jim Farthing bought him a car today. Reubin Reynols brought me home in their big car. I sewed a little today. Made Franklin a union suit.

A good day. Ben plowed some. Jim went to Renan and Strait Stone hunting plow points. Ben went to Jesse Hutchersons for gas. Has run the engine all the evening. Irvin Harvey was here tonight. He said that his mother eat at the table. Charley?] Harvey went to [Thomas?] to put in a radio. I went to sleep. I am sorry that I spilt ink in my book. The Ladies Ade society met at Mr. Edmonds this evening. There was some cars passed here. Nellie was invited but would not go. She cut out some sewing.

A clear colde day. Jim and John Ward (col) cut wood. Ben plowed. Colde enough that the land froze as he turned it up. Nellie cut out some little suits for Mrs. Fitz boy. She done the most of the cooking and dishwashing. Mr. Thomson sent here for butter. I let him have a little. Christine Reynolds come. She wanted butter. I could not let her have any. I churned this evening. The children went to school. Mr. [Duepe?] was sick and did not teach. I hope he won't be sick much.

A good colde day. Ben plowed part of the day. Jim and olde John cut all day. Ben and Henry has gone to Strait Stone. Ben went to the lodge for the first time in several months. Nellie sowed some today. I cut some pieces for a quilt. I [washed?] some this evening. I let Edna and Franklin go to Reynols this evening. They did not stay long. Mollie was gone to see Mrs. Kellie. She is sick. Norman Booker carried Ben to Strait Stone tonight. Edna got the first butter cup today.

A good day. We all staid at home except Henry. He went to Sunday School and to Mr. Jim Powers. Nellie went to Johnsons. This evening Nellie made pies for dinner. Today she bathed the children and dressed them. I milked and churned and helped about dinner some.

A rainy day most of the day. Ben plowed until he got wet. Hattie washed the clothes. Are on the fence now as wet as they can be. Nellie worked some button holes and got most of the dinner. She got a letter from Evylin saying she was sick. Nel has been about half crazie ever since. The children went to school. Come home wet to the skin in places. Hattie Gilbert and John got milk here today. I am so anxious for good weather so I can get out where I please and take the baby with me.

A cloudy morning and some rain. No rain this evening. Ben and Jim went to Renan this morning. This evening they cut and mauled. Ben got hurt. The wedge hit him in the face and cut his lip and a gash in his face. He went to the Dr. and had it fixed up. I hope it will not get bad. Nellie and I got dinner. I churned and printed the butter. Nellie sewed some. I cut pieces for Kate to put together. I went to Norman Bookers a while this evening. Mrs Booker gave me some sweet potatoes as nice as I ever saw. I am so glad of them.

A cloudy day most of the day. Jim and John Ward mauled. Ben shucked some corn. Nellie got dinner. This evening I went to George Blaine. They were all gone from home except Denia. Some of them had gone to Danville and some to Gretna. I would of been glad to see the young folks. Denia had washing done today. Norman Booker and his wife went to Gretna this morning. Heard today that Jamie Gravely was married last Sunday. I wish her well. The children went to school.

A good day. Wind blowed some. Ben face is sore. He worked all morning cleaning up the land that he is going to plow. This morning Jim and John went to mauling. This evening Ben went to the mill. He carried wheat and brought home some flour. Nellie done the most of the cooking today and finished cutting pieces for Kate. This evening the children went to school. Mr. Jennings come by this evening and brought a hymn book. The Blain girls passed here this evening. Don't know where they had bin. Ben bought a six pound can of beef for [?].

A beautiful day. The men folks mauled some and hauled some wood for John Ward. Nellie got dinner and supper. I went to see Kate Harvey. She was at work. Irvin and Duepney brought me home. The children went to school. Dr. Owen let me go with him a part of the way. I was glad of that much help. Every one is good to me no matter when I go. I would be so glad to go and see all of my folks but I may never see them again. I want to see Carrie more than any one now.

A beautiful day. Warm. Mabel has played out of doors for the first time this year. The men folks hauled in some feed. Nellie done most of the cooking and churned and killed a chicken. This evening I washed some the clothes. Dried and I ironed them. Irvin harvey come for some butter. He got two pounds. Kate Hulel[?] and & Christenia Reynols come. They got one pound. Henry and his father went to Mr. Mayhews to play games. Franklin cried to go and Edna wanted to go. They did not.

Some rain this morning. Clear this evening. I went to Lee Brumfield today. Oscar come for me. Grace had a nice dinner. Edna went with me. Nellie staid at home and got dinner and cared for Mabel.
There was trouble at mill and Mayhews. The officers found a still near his house. Lawson Emerson come home with Henry. Then they went some where. We don't know where.

A cloudy day. Ben plowed all day today. Jim went to Renan for some seed. He sowed some peas, I think. I have not done anything much today. Cut some cress salit. Helped the children shuck a shock of corn. Milked and churned. Set a hen. Nellie made a canvas for the plant bed this morning and done some other sewing this evening. Hattie washed here today. The clothes did not dry much. Heard today that Lee had bin appointed commisioner of the I don't know what. Mrs Booker sent and got the quilting frames this morning. Guess she is fixin to quilt some.

A rainy day. The men folk did not do anything much. The children went to school except Franklin. Mabel and Franklin played all day. Nellie made the bread for dinner. We had cress salit for dinner. We all enjoyed it fine. The ladies had a meeting at Mr. Jessie Hutcherson's. Mrs. Booker called me and said that she had a quilt in the frames and I could help quilt if I would. Ben got a package throu the mail today and a part of it is lost. He is very sorry about it.

A clear windy day. The men did not do much work of any kind. Ben went to Renan and to Gretna. He went with Jack Hubband to Gretna. Nellie got dinner and churned. This evening I went to Mr. Booker and helped Mrs. Booker quilt. The children went to school. Heard today that Mildred Fergerson has pneumonia. I do hope that she may get well again. Had a letter from Carrie. They are well now. Bend and Jim are invited to a barn raising tomorrow. Hope the wind won't blow like it has today.

A good day. Ben sent John Ward to Renan this morning for a matress and shavings. Jim cleaned up a brier patch and then went to John Hutchersons to a barn raising. This morning Nellie got dinner. She made the children some pies. I went to see [Mildred Ferguson?]. She is sick. Julia is worried a most to death about her. I come by Mr. Bookers and bought a few potatoes for the children. Well Ben has come to go to bed.

A good day. The men worked on the pasture fence. Ben went to Lee's to a [cutting mach?]. We had [creasy salit] for dinner. The land was frozen this morning. The children went to school. I churned and baked some sweet potatoes. Afther the children come home, we shucked two shocks of corn. Henry brought it to the corn house. Mr. Mayhew and Eula and Harold come and they played games.

A cloudy windy day. Ben worked on his car most of the day and Jim helped him some. The children has had a good time looking on. Nellie got dinner. I put a quilt together and mended some things for the children. Heard from Mildred. She is very sick. Mrs. [Kellie?] is very sick. Oh I hope they may get well. Irvin Harvey was here today for butter. He said hat he was at Ben Worsham's last night at a sosial. Frank Blair says that he is going to start west one day next week. I know they will miss him at home.

A rainy day very disagreable day. We was all at home at dinner. Henry went to Johnson Reynolds. Mildred Ferguson is seriously sick. Nellie got dinner. She baked potato pies that pleased the children. Ben helped Edna fix her beads. Painted them for her. Edna fed the calf for me. Mable is sitting up in the bed talking. She has a bunch of violets. I have stayed with the children in the dining room. Ben put papers under his mattress this evening.

The young one had whipped him and would of killed him but I put him up.

A very rainy day. The branch has bin out of the banks all day. We got using water from a spring up in the woods. Ben and Henry went for water this evening. Nellie come from Johnson Reynols. This morning Reubin brought her home. Henry went to school. Ben and Jim cant do any thing out of doors. Nellie got dinner. Edna churned. I finished my quilt squares. It rained so hard that I did not get the eggs.

A good day. Cloudy. Tonight Henry went to Uncle Lee's. Jim went to Mr. Bookers a few minutes this morning. This evening he went to the island with Mr. Mayhew and Mr. Taylor. The river is in its banks again. Ben come home about dark tonight. Found all of the people getting on very well. Nellie got dinner and supper. Bathed Franklin and Mabel and dressed them. Edna and Franklin had company and Mabel of the Hutchenson children come to see them. They had a good time. Heard that Mildred is getting on very well. Do hope she may continue to improve.

Posie Reynolds come here today to try to sell Ben a car. Could not sell. Heard today that Lizzie Bennett has a fine boy. Mabel slept a nap today and is slow to go to sleep tonight.

A good morning. Rain this evening and thunder. Jim and John Ward finished shucking corn today. This evening Jim and Ben helped Norman Booker put some logs under his barn. Ben come from Role Hubbards. A good day. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Then Ben and Nellie and I went to Straitstone. We bought some things. We come home and I got dinner. Come home by Johns Saw Tenier a few minutes then went to Curries. Found them all well. Got a lot of turnip greens. Got home o.k. Nellie had made her a dress and killed a chicken. Dressed it. A beautiful day. We all staid at home until after dinner except Henry. Lawson Emmerson and Henry went on the mountain. They carried a snack to eat with them. Carrie and family come to Lee Brumfields. Kate Harvey went to see Pearl today the first time that she has bin out since she was so sick. Jim went off this evening had has not come home yet. Hope he will come soon.

A very windy day. Ben carried Lizzie to Dr. Owen this morning. Mrs Owen carried her to Gretna. Jim plowed while Ben was gone. Then Ben plowed the ballance of the day. Working three horses to the plow and it pulls them hard. Jim worked some on the garden. Cleaned out the spring. Raked around the spring yard and burned the trash. Henry and Edna has bin sick all day. They are broke out now and I hope they will soon be well again. Nell has waited on the children with some thing to try to eat and water to drink. She has cut out sewing but did not do much sewing today.

A good day. Ben and Jim plowed some. They finished hauling up the corn. John Ward planted his garden. Nellie finished making the bayby two dresses and bloomers. I worked the button holes. Nellie washed all the evening. the post office in [Gretna?] come to see Nellie today. Henry and Edna has bin sick all day. Edna is some better tonight. Franklin has followed the men most of the day. Our phone has gone dead. Today we cant her over it so as to under stand any thing that is said. Ben went to Norman Bookers tonight to get them to phone Johnson Reynolds to come and fix it.

A windy day. The ground was frozen this morning. They plowed some here today. Johnson come and fixed the phone. Edna is feeling fine a gain. Henry is not so well. Nellie finished Ednas dress today. She has made the baby two dresses and Edna one this week. I dont do any thing that counts but keep busy most of the time. John Ward and family went visiting this evening. I guess they got very colde. Mabel seemed to have a colde. I am so sorry for her to be sick. Ben worked in his garden some this evening. I do hope it may get warmer tonight. Guess the fruit is killed.

A clear colde day. Ice plenty. This morning guess the most of the fruit is killed. Ben carried Jim and Nellie to the train and back by about ten oclock. We have staid here all day. Henry come down stairs today. I hope that they may soon get well. John Hutcherson was here this evening. Said Mrs Jesse has measles. I am sorry for them with that baby and no one to wait on them. I get to want to see some of the children so bad. I feel like starting but I cant go and some of them cant and wont come to see me.

A clear colde day. Ben and Jim worked all day. John Ward worked half the day. Then took holiday. Kate Harvey come to see us today. I was glad to see her. So glad she is able to walk that far. Jim got home last night and we did not hear Jim. Marvin brought him. I know he had a colde trip. I would of bin glad to see him and all the rest of them. I miss Nettie. Hendricks Baley has measles. Hope it wont hurt her much. Franklin is sick to night. We think he is taking measles. Edna and Franklin and Mabel did not eat supper.

A good day. Ben went to Rob Hubbands to help cover a house. Jim hauled sand a part of the day. Then went to the store. He bougt some matches. Lelia Ward washed some for me today and ironed and brought the clothes home. Nellis has sewed some today and helped attend to the children. Franklin and Mabel is both sick. I am troubled a bout them. Guess they have got measles and can't brake out. I see lots of trouble. There is so much that should be done that I cant do.

A very good day. Jim plowed some in the garden and planted some potatoes. Ben has not come home yet. I had a letter from Carrie today. Was glad to hear from them. Marvin had gone on a trip to Harrisonburg. Letia killed and dressed a hen for me. Nellie has waited on the children a lot today. Franklin is sick and Mabel dont feel good a bit and is so cross. Henry fished some today in the branch. Caught 4 little fish. I put out 25 little chickens this morning. I hope tht Ben will come home tonight but dought it.

A rainy morning. Ben got home at home at eleven oclock. The children was so glad. He brought a nice fish home. We enjoyed it. Franklin and Mabel are very sick. A good day. Jim plowed some. Hauled out corn stalks. Ben went to Rob Hubbards and helped work on his house. He come home at dark. We was all glad. Franklin and Mabel are better today. Nellie has held Mabel a heap today. I hope she may soon be well. Henry went to school. Edna had to stay and help wait on Mabel. I put eggs under two hens tonight. A good day. There was a big frost this morning. The men folks plowed and cleaned up all day. Nellie and I has held Mabel in our laps most all day. She has bin as cross as could all day. Edna has bin at home today. Henry went to school. Franklin went to dinner and supper. Hope it wont hurt him. I talked with Grace Brumfield. She said that the most of the sick was feeling a better. I will be so glad when the measles is over. Ben is singing Daniel Tucker to Mabel. She wont go to sleep.

A rainy day. No out door work done and not much in the house. Nellie baked a cake for Franklin[?]. It is his birth day. He is seven years olde today. I mended a quilt that the dogs tore. Nellie dressed Mabel in a new dress. She is so glad. I had a letter from Carrie. She said that her children had the measles. I am sorry for her and the children. It is a job to wait on on them. I am sorry that is is raining. It is so hard on the sick and the little chickens. We heard that there was but 13 scholars at school to day.

A very bad day. Colde and rain. Nellie got a telagram to come to see Evylin at once as she needed her. She fixed and went this evening. Jim and Ben went to Gretna with her. They got home be for night. I got supper and we eat by day light. I am sorry for Nellie. I will miss her so much. She has bin so good to the children. Mabel will miss her so much. The boys saw Paul Smith. He said that Reese and Roy was sick with measles. I am so sorry for them all but hope that they may get on ok. They children here seem well a gain.

A cloudy day. We all staid at home until noon. Then Henry went to May Brumfields. He come home about sundown. Jim and Ben hunted crows nest. Foud three. Edna and Franklin and Mabel and I staid at the house. I wanted to get out but the weather is rough and colde. Lilia Ward come this morning and helped to clean up some. I got dinner by twelve oclock. Have some little chickens that need putting out but the weather is two bad. Bathed Franklin and Mabel. I told them that was the last of the measles if they dont take colde.

A clear cool day. Ben and Jim cemented a round a spring up in the field. John Ward shelled some corn. I am glad tonight. Fate[?] and Mollie and Denia come a little while Cordie come with her mother. I was so glad that they come. I get to want to see them all but cant. Hattie washed for me today. Lelia washed five bed quilts for me today. I am glad that washing is done. I got a small check today. I am glad of that interest on my bonds.

A cloudy day. Ben and Jim put up wire all day fencing in a pasture. John Ward went to the mill with corn. He got his grinding done. I was glad to get some meal. I have bin lone some today for some one to talk to. The baby has bin good today. She slept some this evening. The other children went to school. A clear colde windy day. Ben and Jim worked on the fence some. Jim made a hotbed and worked in the garden some. John Ward draged the corn land. Ben got his gladolis bulbs. Jim got a letter from his son inlaw telling that Evylin was feeling better and that Nellie got to Silver Grove Sunday. The three children went to school. Mabel and I have a bad day. It was so colde that she could not stay out of doors and that was what whe wanted to do. I think now that I will enjoy warm weather. Edna has come to go to bed.

A good day. Ben and Jim plowed today. Jim planted some in the garden. I planted some dahlias. The children went to school. Mabel staid out doors most of the day. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Emthied[?] the milk and churned. Fed the chickens and got dinner and washed the dishes and rocked Mabel to sleep and read the paper some and fed the chickens and milked the cows and got supper and washed dishes. Now we are ready to go to bed. I have to stay here so close that I dont know anything to write.

A good day. The men hauled manure and drilled it in the land for tobacco. Jim cleaned the stalls. The children that go school went. Mabel staid out doors nearly all day. I have dodged about most of the day. Lelia Ward come this morning. She got a hen for her washing. Had postal from Carrie. She said that all was sick at her house except the baby. I do hope they may soon get well. Today has bin warm. Mabel has gone to bed.

A very windy day. The fire got out from Clack Hubbard new ground. A lot of the neightbors met and stoped it. Did not do much damage. Ben carried the children to Kates. They staid most of the evening. I met them and come with them home. Joe Edmonds gave us a ride part of the way home. I was glad to get that much help. Henry has plowed today. We met Julia and the children. I was glad to see her Bend come by and brought me home. Jim staid at home.

A good day. We all staid at home until after twelve. Then Ben carried the children to Mr. Jim Powers. I went with them as far Earnest Craddocks. I am so glad that I went. Irvin Craddock and family was there when I got there. Then Ken and Ethel three children and Len Motley and wife and Claud [Deboe?] and wife and Ruth Motley and Elley Craddock and Isla and Cordie Blair and Mr. Taz Anderson. I was glad to see all of them.

A very windy daty. The men worked on their land all day Ben tried to burn the honey suck in the grave yard. Did not burn well. The children went to school. Lelia come here a little while this morning. Hatie washed today. The wind blowed the clothes all about. They soon got dry. I have bin busy all day.Worked the button holes in Henrys shirts milked the cows twice churned once cooked breafast dinner and supper. Washed dishes tonight.

A good day. The men worked on their tobacco land hauling manure and plowing. The children went to school. Mabel went with them to the field twice. I have bin busy most of the day. I baked sweet potatoe pies for dinner. Mrs. Ruth Booker come to see me today. I was glad that she come. I had thought maybe because I am old and am not fashionable that none of the would come. I heard to day that Marvin Smith was sick and several of the children was sick. I am asleep.

A good day. They boys hauled and plowed all the morning. I did as usual. Was busy and done nothing that you could see. Irvin Harvey and Kate come a few minutes this evening. Irvin come for seed corn. The boys corn was not fit for seed. This evening Ben and Jim Mabel and I went to Gretna. Bens car had a blow out. They worked on it a good while. Finely got it so it would run. We had as good trip as we could expect. Got home. Found things as good usual. I did not milk and was sorry for that.

A good day. Jim went to mill. He got back by 11 oclock. He work on the garden all evening manureing and planting. Ben plowed all morning. This evening John Ward and Ben went to the island for guano. They were late getting home. I have bin busy all day. Fixed Ednas sweater sleeves. Made them short enough. Mabel has bin good today. Played out doors most of the day. I have not seen any body to day except Lelia Ward. Edna helped milk tonight. We had or first mess of plant bed salit today.

A good day but windy. Ben an Jim went to the island today. Ben went again this evening. Ben bough some straw hats to day. Mollie come to see me this evening. I was glad. Edna come by Reynols. Julia fit a dress on Edna. Franklin is complain to night. I dont know any to write. Edna got a litter from Nellie today. We ae all glad to hear from her.

A cloudy day. Rain this evening. Jim and Ben worked around here until after twelve. They they went to the sale of Jessie Hutchersons land. Mr. Norman Booker carried me with his family to the river at Mr. Jim Bookers fish trap. They had a fish fry. There was some fifty or more people there. The me done the cooking. The fish was fried as nice as could be. We had a good time. Some of them had fried chicken and some had ham and cake and cream. We all took a shower of rain. The rain was badly needed. Hope all got home safe. I cooked supper after I got home.

Sunday. A rainy morning. Ben worked on Henrys clown suit some. Henry and Edna went to Strait Stone to Sunday school but they did not have any school it rained so much. The children did not get wet much. This evening Johnson Reynols come and Lee and Grace Brumfield. I was glad to see them. I got dinner and supper. I cooked a chicken and baked pies. I bathed little Mabel and dressed her. Henry went to Johnsons to see Floid. He thinks they found a hawk nest. Preacher [Dabney?] was buried to day.

A good day. Ben went to the mill. Did not get any brand. Jim worked on the fence. John Ward went fishing. Lelia Ward come and done some sweeping. I put away some quilts this morning and churned and got dinner. This evening I got Mabel to sleep. Johnson Reynols come a few minutes this morning. Kate come a little while. She wanted cymbling seed. The children went to school. Ben finished Henrys clown suit this evening. I killed a hen this evening. Mabel got a letter from Evelyntoday. Whe was glad to [pen ran off page?].

A good day. The men went to planting corn. Today John Ward [draged?]. I got a letter from John today. I was glad to hear from him. Norman Owen is here tonight. Come with Frank home from school. I sent three dozen eggs to Blains this morning for [Bobbett?]. Mabel has not bin to sleep today. I have felt bad all day. There is so much to do. I am not able to do it as it should be done.

A good day. They planted corn. Norman Owen was here this morning. I was fring pies for dinner when Carrie walked in I was so glad. Marvin and the children looks bad. They have not got over the measles. Eva ear[?] is in a bad shape. I do hope that they will get well soon. Hope they got home o.k. The children went to school. Henry went with George Blain and Mr. Mayhew. I hope he wont get hurt. Jim planted some things in the garden.

A good day. Ben planted corn this morning. Jim worked in the garden. This evening Ben and I went to the school house. They had a play over there. The school closed today. I think they had a good school. I have not heard anyone find fault with the principle. Mr. Booker brought Edna Franklin and I home on his machine. Mabel went to school today for her first time. She wanted to come home with her dady on the buggy. There was was a lot of my folks there. I was glad to see all of them. Jim planted beans today and pumpkin seed.

A beautiful day. They finished planting corn here today and plowed some for tobacco. Henry went to the school house to practice for a play to night. Henry and Edna walked over there tonight. Ben and Franklin went after dark on the machine. I was glad that they went. He will bring them all home. Jim and the baby and I staid at home. I went to sleep and made this mark. The children and I went to Norman Bookers. We had a pleasant visit. There is several places that I would like to go but can't.

A good day. The men folks plowed and worked on the land until twelve oclock. Then Ben carried the children and I to White Falls fishing. We did not catch any thing any acount. Had a good trip any way. Tonight Ben carried the children to Strait Stone to a show. Mabel is a sleep now. While I was gone Kate and Irvin Harvey come. I wish I had not gone. Jim worked in the garden some. They moved the pigs to a new lot today. I did not milk the cows tonight. I had early supper.

A good day. Ben went to Gretna this morning to take the train to go to the lodge in Tennessee. I do hope he may make the trip o.k. Henry went to the Sunday School this morning. The rest of us staid at home until after twelve. Edna and Franklin and Mabel and I went to Mr. Edmons. John and Sarah Emerson and three children and Mr. Trent come here. Walter Emerson come for me to come. I was glad to see them. I get so lonesome I cant hardly stay at home. Henry has gone to Uncle Johnson Reynols to carrie Floids [cap/car?] home.

A good day. Jim hauled olde rails to the wood pile for stove wood. Henry plowed. Hattie Gilbert washed here. Lelia Ward come here a little while. She brought all of her children with her. Good looking little darkeys. I have bin busy most of the day. The children and I walked over to the barns looking for wilde straw berrie blooms. Found a nice little patch.

A good day. Jim and Henry and John Ward put in fertilizer an fixed some land ready for planting. The children and I went to Johnson Reynolds this evening. Edna and Mabel went to the store. Edna got some tobacco for Jim and a box of paper for me. Mollie walked with us part way home. Mr. and Mrs. Edmons come on their car and taken us on. I was glad. Mrs Edmons had bin to see her great grand son. He was born last night. Mrs Elders son. Franklin played all the evening with Paul Farthing.

A windy day and colde. The coldest that I ever saw for the time of year. I am a fraid that all green things will be killed. We had storm last night. Rain and wind. I am glad it was no worse. The men put in fertilizer this morning. It has bein so colde and windy that they have not done much of any thing this evening. Mabel got a note from her daddy this evening. I hope he may get home tomorrow. I have milked, cooked, and churned, parched coffee and done nothing all day. Daysie the dog is missing tonight. I am afraid some one has killed her.

A colde day. Some frost this morning. Ben has got home. The chilen and I are as glad as can be. Jim has worked on the garden most of the day. Heard today that little Julia Smith is in the hosptille at Roanoke. The little girls is at Kate Harveys. Arch Moons son Jim killed him self last night at Cedar Forest Bridge. Was found in the creek this morning. He ran his car on the bank of the creek and he fell in the creek. Ben brought all of the children a little present. They are glad and I am two. They found Daisy dead this morning.

A cool windy day. Frost this morning , enough to kill some things. The men sawed wood here today. Good stove wood. Heard today that Claud Edmons killed the dog. Heard from Marvins Carrie[?] come home yesterday. The baby is no better. Solde my cow that I called Spot for $35[?]. Ben and Henry went to Gretna today. Ben bought meal and brand and sugar. I coud of went but the wind blowed so hard that I did not want to go. I want to see all of the children but can't.

A windy day. We need rain bad. The men have not done much today. I have not done any thing to count any thing. Lelia Ward come this morning and washed up the dishes for me. Mrs. Booker come this evening to get a setting of eggs for Mrs. Dave Booker[?]. Ben and Henry are fixing to go to Strait Stone to the Lodge. Jim planted some tomatoe plants. The weather is so colde and the land so dry that nothing cant grow. The children is worrying me. They won't go to sleep.

A little rain this morning. It is badly needed. We all was at home at dinner. Ben carried the children to see Grandma Carr. I went to Kate Harveys. Charles and wife was there. A good day. The men worked on their tobacco land most of the day. Oh how I wist we could have rain. I have felt bad all day. Guess walking up to Renan had something to do with my bad feelings. I have bin busy all day. Cleaned up the chickens coop. I gathered a few strawberries today. The first that has ripened this spring. Lelia Ward sent me some salit for dinner. I fried some pies this morning. Ben is very much comnplaining tonight. He has a very bad colde. Jim had a letter from Nellie today.

A good day. We had a shower of rain this evening. They got ready to water their plant beds then did not because it rained. Some they picked weeds until night. I went with Mrs booker to see Mrs Elder[?]. She has a fine little boy. Henry caught a perch and an elle this evening. I skined the eel with Ednas help. I wrote and sent Nellie a letter this evening. I hope to hear from carrie soon.

A cool windy day. Jim and Ben worked on their tobacco ground getting it ready to plant. I baked a pudding and got a few strawberries for dinner. Have not done much of anything this evening. I have not felt well all day. We did not get any mail today. Thre was a wreck between Lynchburg and the island. Jim went to Renan this evening. Heard that they had sent Mr. Tiny[?] Shelton to Stanton. His mind has got bad. Henry calls. He has gone gigging. All the rest has gone to bed.

A good day. A little rain this evening. The men worked on tobacco land. Hattie washed here today. The clothes dried quick. I made two pillow tick and one bolster tick and filled them with feathers and a bed tick. I am so glad that is done. Irvin Harvey and Hazel and Eva Smith come a few minutes this evening. We heard that Carries baby was opperated on. We dont know what was the matter with it. The children has played and bin good as I could ask. We picked a few straw berries this morning and [?] some dew berries. They were all eat.

A good day. The men worked on tobacco land. Jim planted some sweet potatoe slips. Ray Booker come for some musk mellon seed. Carrie and all of her children come and Kate Harvey come with them. I was so glad to see them. Little Julia has fallen off but I hope she may get well. Henry went to Strait Stone. There was not any preaching. The baby has a sore eye. A sty coming I think. Henry and Lawson Emerson has gone giggin to night.

A good morning. Rain this evening. We are glad of rain. Lawson Emerson staid here last night after they quit fishing. They caught three eels. Henry and Lawson skined them and had them ready to cook for breakfast. They went to Sunday school and home for dinner. Ben and Edna went to preaching at Strait Stone. This evening Ben carried the children to Mr. Powers. Mrs Power was not at home. They come home through the rain. Jim went to John Hutchersons. While he was over there Will Thomas Davis shot at Will Dickerson. Hit Bettie Davis. A bad thing for Bob Starkey as they were his hands. To work Bettie was staying with Mrs Elder. Killed my chickens to day.

A good day. Ben and Jim and all that could drop or plant tobacco went to the field. Mabel staid out all day for her first time. She had a good time playing. Lelia Ward and her children was at the field this evening. I churned and got dinner. Fried some nice meat and had Irish potatoes. Stewed some apples and picked some strawberries. Baked corn and wheat bread. Have not seen any one to day to hear any news. I planted a few beet plants in the garden. Found one of my hens dead this morning. The first poppy bloomed today. It is beautiful.

A good day. the men folks worked on the tobacco land except Ben. He went to Chatham to be on a jury. He did not want to go but could not get off. Hattie washed here today. I and three children went to George Blains. Denia was not at home. She had gone to Otho Blains to carrie Sallie some straw berries. They said that they had gathered 9 gallons at one time. Cordie had had some beautiful sweat peas.

A cloudy day. A little rain this evening. We need more so bad. It is very cold for May. We have had a fire all the evening. I got a letter from Nellie today telling a bout Evylins little baby. It was born the 20th of the month. It is named Elain. I was glad to hear from her. Hope she may do well. Ben has not come home yet. I know he is put out about having to stay. They have bin fixing land ready to plant all day today. Jim went to John Hutchersons plant bed and got tomatoe and pepper plants and planted them. Then he planted some water mellon seed. A cloudy day. No rain to do any good. The folks planted tobacco half the day. They plowed in the corn this evening. Jim planted potatoe slips. I was disapointed this evening. I wanted to go to [Ehels?] but had no way to go. Mrs Booker went on the buggy. I got [Beaulas?] babyes picture. She is pretty. I was glad of the picture. Glad to be remembered. I sewed a little this evening. We need a lot of sewing here but I dont know how it is to get done. Jim got a letter from Nel to day. The children brought a little chicken home today.

A good day. The men has plowed a little. Worked on the car some. Ben went to Strait Stone for some thing for the car. Henry and Ben and Lawson Emerson has gone gigging to night. Jim is at the dining room reading. Three of the children has gone to bed. I have wanted to go some where to fish but cant go. No one will take me. I could go most any evening if I had away. I think it is right to work but I think it is hard for me to stay right here all the time. Thas it what suits Jim and Ben. I dont know anything to write so I will [g?] some. Ednas cat is sick.

A cloudy day. No rain. We need rain so bad. Ben plowed in the corn and Henry replanted and they both quareled because it is so sorry. The three children and I went to Johnson Reynolds. Mollie was makeing [Christine?] a dress. They had Alcie Callans there. She was ironing. Kate Harvey and Carrie Smith and children come. I was so glad that they come. Julia can walk a gain. I am very glad. [Reise?] brought us home. That helped so much. I had a hen for dinner. I will quit. I am a sleep or about that. Ednas cat is sick tonight.

A good day. Ben went to Chatham. Thomson carried him. Jim and Henry and John watered the plant bed. Kate and Irvin come a few minutes this evening. The girls has bin dressed like boys and played all the evening. I filled some pillow ticks with feathers this evening. Did not get the washing done today. Hatties folks has the measles. Henry went to Renan this morning fo sugar. I made three quarts of straw berry preserves this morning. We need rain very bad. Did hope we would have some this evening.

A good day. We need rain very bad. We all staid at home until after dinner. Then Ben and Henry and Edna went to Strait Stone. They had a Sunday school convention there this evening. Jim went to look for straw berries. He foun a nice lot. Franklin and Mabel and I staid at home. No one come to see us. Jim was carrieing water to the garden. Mabel was with him. He helped her across the branch and sliped and fell in the branch. Got almost wet all over. Henry went with Floid Renyolds home and have not come home yet.

A good day. Ben and Henry and Jim helped Mr. Booker plant tobacco. Watered and planted. I have bin very busy to day. I killed and fried two chickens for dinner. It is a hard time to get any thing but meat and bread. Lizzie and Alma Bennett come to see us this evening. I certainly was glad thay they come. Lizzie has the tooth ache. Lizzie brought Denia some flower [slips?]. I let Edna and Franklin go and carrie them home.

A good day. Some clouds but no rain. We need rain so bad. I hope it may rain very soon. The men spent the day hauling water and put it on their plant beds. The children has bin good today. They are all a sleep in the same bed. That is the three that stays at the house. I finished fixing the pillows that I have made ticks for. I made six. Put feathers that was in Josies bed in some of them. I am glad that is done. Ben worked on his car some today. I think it will run now. I can't get to go any where. That is the way that the boys want me to be.

A cloudy day. No rain. It is needed so bad. They finished plowing over the corn. It is so dry that they hardly know what to do. Ben worked on his flowers some. Jim replanted the water mellons. I done nothing that you can see. I made Edna an under waist. I wanted to go to Gretna so bad but could not get off. I need needles and thread and buttons. Lelia Ward washed for us today and ironed and sent the clothes home. She is a good hand.

A good day. The boys watered their plant beds. I done my usual getting arond. Peggie was in Mr Bookers pasture. Did not get her until late this evening. Mollie come to see me this evening. I was glad. Johnson come for her. Julia is at home. Come last Tuesday. I hope she may get well. Ben got Mr. Edmons mower and cut some grass. The grass is so short that is is harly worth cutting. Bens garden is beautiful now. The Raleigh man passed here to day. I did not buy any thing.

I went with the children to the curant bushes late this evening. Edna got a letter from Aunt Effie. Sent four dresses of Julias that she had out grown. I have wanted to go to Gretna all the evening. In fact all the week but could not get off.

A good day. Jim and Ben has staid at home all day. Henry and Edna went to the church at Strait Stone. There was preaching there today. We had fried chicken and caned peache for dinner. Late this evening Marvin and family come and staid for supper. Carrie got supper while I milked. I am glad that they come. The baby is not so well but I hope she will swoon be better. The Emerson girls come a while this evening and played with the children. They are nice little girls. I think I have wanted to go some where ever so long but cant.

A good day. The boys watered the plant beds. Then got up some hay. Ben went to Strait Stone this morning for things to cook with mostly. This evening he carried the three smallest children and I to Cedar Forest. I fished in the pond. Caught a few little fish. Ben and the children went to Jim Powers. Miss Mollie Moon was buried today. I met Mrs Anderson and we talked a while. I thought she looked so pretty. He clothes was so becoming to her We stopped at Mrs Hendricks a few minutes. Got home ok.

Edna and Mabel and I went to Johnson to see Julia Fergerson. She was at work. We met Kate Hubbard and Christina [and?] Jannie Brumfield comeing to see us. They went back and we with them. Ben bought some beans to day. The weather is so dry that vegetables cant grow much.

A good day. Some clouds in sight but no rain here. The men planted some tobacco this evening. Marvin and Carrie and four children come today. I was so glad. They staid and eat dinner. Then went right away. I was churning when they come. I had beans on cooking. Edna beat up her first cake today. It was fine. Made by receipt in the cook book. We had beets for dinner. The first that growed this year. I put out 20 little chickens today. Henry has had the tooth ache this evening so he did not work for a while.

Heard to day that Mrs. Bunny [?ne?] has a fine boy. There is a Sunday school meeting going on at Strait Stone. Denia come to see me this evening. She did not find me. Then she went to Mr Bookers. Mrs Booker phoned me that she was there so Mabel and I went up there. I have brought more water to day than I have for a long time. Edna dropped plants.

A windy day. Very hard on the crop. Mr. Booker planted tobacco but it can't live long unless it rains. I got peas to day and cooked beans. It is a hard time a bout something good to cook. I want to be thankful that we are doing as well as we are. Kate Harvey and Pearl Wiggenton come a little while. Pearl brought Mabel a nice dress. Mrs. Car sent Edna a nice dress. I am glad that they have got them. John Ward went to Level Run to a burial. Mabel slept a good nap in the [s?ing] and have bein good ever since. Went to sleep.

A good day and clear and dry. Oh how we need rain. The men planted some tobacco. I [sic] it can't live if it don't rain soon. Ray Booker played with Franklin all evening. They went in the garden and pulled them an onion and wanted to eat them. I did not let Franklin. Thought it might make him sick. Mabel has not bin so well today. Hope she won't get sick. I have bin very busy today. Tried to sweep the floor most all over the house. That is a job for me. Lawson Emerson is coming up here tonight to go fishing.

A good day. Henry went to Johnsons. Ben and the children went to Cedar Forest. They stoppe at the church. Then went to Jim Powers for dinner. Jim staid at home. Mrs. Booker and Mrs Anderson come to see me. I would of bin glad to seen them. Gordon and Earl come after me and carried me to George Blains. Lizzie was there and Earl and his wife was there. Dorathy and Ruth Worshan was there. They are pretty girls. I was so glad to get to go. Jim and I was eating dinner when they come. Cary and Shirly was with them. Frances was there.

A good rain today. The men replanted tobacco. I am so glad that it has rained. We could not make any thing to eat if it had not rained soon. I have bin busy doing most nothing. The children has had to stay in all the morning. They tried to see what they could do. I sewed a little this morning. I wrote Mrs Lou [Terry?] today. This has bin one of the worst seasons that I have ever known. There is not plants to plant the crop.

A cloudy day and some rain. We have rain enough for now. They finished planted all the land they had fixed up and give some plants away. I am glad that they had them. We had fried chicken for dinner. The children caught them for me. Mr. Mayhew and two of his little boy helped plant some. Mr Les Booker come to Normans for plants. Plants is so hard to get this year. I am writing early to night. I got supper early as it was raining so that they could not work. Edna got a letter from Mrs Bessie Hobson to day. She said that Mary would graduate soon.

Cloudy all day and some rain. This morning Ben and Jim replanted some tobacco. This evening Ben staid with the children. This evening Oscar Brumfield kindly carried Mr Kellie and Mrs Kellie with him fishing. I went with them. I was glad to go. We did not catch any fish the river. We could not fish there so we come back to the creek. Mrs. Kellie fell and broke her arm and we come home as quick as we well could. I am so sorry that whe was hurt. I would do something to help her if there was any thing that I could do. I was so glad to go. Mr Kellie was there.

A good day. Jim and Ben plowed all the morning. Ben cut wheat for Mr Booker. The children was invited to Mr. Rufus Carrs to a birth day party and Ben could not carry them. Edna cried. I wish they could of went. We had a vegetable dinner. Snaps, potatoes, peas, beets. I had an onion. The children was at Mr Bookers all the evening. This evening has seemed long to me here by my self. John Ward and Henry thined corn all day.

A good day. Henry and Edna went to Sunday school. They come home and eat dinner. Then Ben carried them to Marvin Smiths. Jim would not go. I think they enjoyed their visit. I know I did. Mr. Emmet Smith nearly all of the family come to Marvins. Carrie had cake and pickle enough for all of us. It was very nice. When we got home Lee and Jim was on the porch talking. I got supper as quick as I could but Lee would not stay. I went to sleep and dropped my pen and made a blot on my book.

A good day. Ben finished cutting wheat this morning. This evening they fixed some tobacco land. Jim plowed some sweet potatoes. I wanted to go to the river but did not go. I mended overalls yesterday and to day. Lelia Ward sent the clothes home done up nice. I am glad of that much help. We had new Irish potatoes and last years butter beans and apple pies. I killed two chickens for dinner tomorrow. I made a mess of my book. Nothing but carelessness. I am ashamed of it but cant help it now.

A very hot day. We had a thunder cloud but no rain to do any good. I hope it may rain soon. We need it so bad. Ben mowed some oat this morning and cut some this evening. He went to Strait Stone and got twine. He made a quick trip. He let all the children go. Jim and John and Henry worked on the tobacco. Jim [?] the potatoes. It needed nearly 100 slips to replant the slips. I made Franklin a middie to day. I don't know hoe it will look but hope it will do very well. I have not made any thing of that sort in a long time.

A very hot day and no rain yet. Ben finished cutting oat this evening. They got up the oat that he mowed. Oscar Brumfield come and got the binder. I hope he may have good time and not brake any thing. This evening I got a letter from Alma Bennett. She is in Indiana. Well I don't know how to spell. I picked a few berries this evening. A good day. Rain in sight but none here. Jim staid at home all day. Ben and I and three children went to Role Hubbards. Ellen was not at home when we got there. Role was going after her. Ben and Role went on the car. She come and we had a pleasant visit. This evening we went to Mr. Rufus Cars to see Mrs Fanny Car. Mrs. Rufus Car got supper and we eat before we come home. I got supper for Jim and Henry. I was glad to do that much for them. Henry went bathing today.

A good day. No rain yet. Jim and Ben hauled up the wheat and stacked and Jim got up some oats. Late this evening Ben went to Cedar Forest. He carried the three least children and I. We bought two bushels of meal from George Hutchenson. Paid #2:20 cts for it. We carried 6 dozen eggs to Thomsons. Ben went to Jim Powers and staid a little while. Tonight when I got ready to write gathered up my things to write I turned the ink over in my lap and spill a [pon? or upon] of it. Edna got me a pan of water. I washed all of it out that I could.

A very windy day and hard on the growing things. Jim and Ben finished getting up the oats. Ben mowed some. Two men come to see the boys today. Candidates. The county is full of men wanting office. A clear hot day most of the day. A little cloudy right at night. Ben mowed some and got up some hay. All three of them plowed some this morning. I cooked snaps. Can't get many more until it rains. oh that we could have a good rain. The children made them a pond in the branch to play in. They have a good time playing. I got up the onions this evening. The children helped get them to the house. They are fine. The onions was planted the 27th of October and got up the 27 of June. The children want to sleep on a pallet to night.

A good day. No rain. You never see the crop need rain worse. I cooked dried beans for dinner and I am glad to have themn to cook. I have plenty of chickens [lang?] enough to kill. A clear day. No rain in sight yet. Henry went to George Blains to help thrash wheat. Jim and Ben plowed tobacco. Ben and the children went to Strait Stone this evening. I picked a few black berries this evening. Want to preserve them in the morning if I can. Lelia Ward come here this evening for a hen. Said she had to fix a basket for a pick nick tomorrow. I sent 7 doz eggs to the store to day. They paid 25 cts per doz. Edna bought two bowls to day. I am pleased with them. Ben hates to take us any where so bad that he spoils all the pleasure.

A good day. No rain yet. Ben and Henry went to Gretna. They had a big tim. They eat dinner with Marvin and Carrie. Jim did not go. He worked most of the day. I made three quarts of black berrie preserves and killed two and fried them and baked a cake. That was our dinner. Vegetables has a bout dried up. John Ward had the team and went to Level Run to a big gathering of some sort. I gathered some berries. Intend making jellie tomorrow. The children are all in a glee tonight eating candy and blowing up their balloons. Good night.

A good day. Jim helped [Will?] Farthing and Norman Booker thrash wheat and then they thrashed here and then then at Mr. Laynes. Ben uncovered his tobacco plants this morning. A rainy morning. We have had a good rain. All we need now. Hope it may not be so dry any more this summer. We all staid at home until after twelve. Henry went to Johnson Reynols this evening. A good day. The boys helped Mr. Mayhew thrash wheat and helped him plant tobacco until twelve oclock. Then they eat dinner. Ben and Henry staid and played croqet. Jim come home. He had a letter that he wanted to mail. The children and I did not eat until Jim come. After dinner we went to see Bruce Reynols and wife. Julia Fergerson was canning berries and preserving. A good day. The men worked on their tobacco. Ben walked to Renan for a plow point and some bolts. He got 25 pound of sugar. I made some jellie this morning. I picked a half gallon of berries and made a pie. I cooked cabbage and potatoes. This evening I picked a gallon of berries. I boiled them and put them to drain. Intend making jellie in the morning. The children wanted to go see Aunt Kate this evening. I did not feel like I could go and walk and there was no other way that I could go. I keep thinking that some one will come to see me.

We had a hard cloud last night at midnight. Lot of hard thunder and a hard rain and some wind. The land is washed level in some places. Ben and Jim and Mr. Booker went to Mr. Eleck Hutchersons and prised up some rock for cap rock on flues in the barn. They were hot and tierd when they got home. Henry and Hugh Brumfield and Mr. Mayhew and some of his boys went seign. They did not catch much. The creek was so mudy and high. Edna and Franklin and Mabel went to Mr. Mayhews a little while. They had a nice time. They come home and brought water and wood.

A good day. Jim staid at home all day. Ben and the children went to Strait Stone to Sunday School and preaching. The Emerson children come home with them. I left dinner that they made some sort of a dinner. I went to George Blairs. There was no one at home. I set down in their porch and had not bin there long when Foy Pickerel and Ernest and Irvin Craddock come after me. Sister Mary[?] and Foy Pickerel and family and Irvin Craddock and family was there. I was very glad to see them. Ben and Henry went to Cedar Forest to night. The Billie Sunday club will be there.

A cloudy morning, rain at twelve oclock. Jim got up some rock. Ben went to the mill. He got wet coming home. Had to change clothes. He eat dinner and him and Henry went to Mr. Mayhews and play croquet. The Mayhews had supper be fore Ben and Henry come home. Said they had fresh fish. Mayhew went seining this morning and caught several fish. John Hutcherson run a gainst Clack Hubbards horse and brok his leg and then they killed the horse. I am sorry that it happened. A good day. The men worked on their tobacco until dinner. Then Jim and Ben and Mr. Booker went to Mr. Elleck Hutchensons to get up rock for their flues. They went on Mr. Booker's car. Kate Harvey and Virginia Thomson was here this evening. Irvin brought them and come for them. The children and I was fixing to go to see Kate and Virginia. I was glad that they come. We would of had to walk. Ben and Henry and Edna has gone to Cedar Forest to night. I wish I could get to go some where and time to enjoy going. Work work work work and stay at home.

A good day. The men hauled some flue wood this morning. This evening Henry and John Ward went to the mill. They got their grinding. Jim and Ben and I went to Gretna and to see Marvin and Carrie. We had a rough trip but I was glad to go. Alma Bennett is here. She has made the most of three dresses since yesterday. She got supper for me tonight. She is one handy girl. Oh how I wish I could see all of the children. Some of them that could come to see me won't come. Alma wants me to try on my new dresses.

A good day. I got breakfast and milked at home. Alma washed dishes. Then we caught 32 chickens and put them in a crate. Ben helped us. Then he brought the children and I to Gretna and to Marvins. Some rain today. We need it and more yet Carrie packed a nice lunch and Carrie and all the children and I started to go to Taylors Mill. It commenced to rain while we were at Gretna. We went on until we near the mill and it rained so hard that we come home. We eat dinner at home and spent the evening mending the childrens clothes and going to the snap patch. Carrie had to take little Julia. That was a job on her. I have wrote a note home to night and so much hope that they are well at home.

A good day. Carrie and the children and I went to Taylors Mill this morning. We fished a while and caught a few fish. The children went in bathing and had a good time. We went home and then come to see Lizzie. Carrie and all the children come with me. Found Lizzie well and by her self. Gordon is staying at home. This week Frances is visiting her folks. A good day. I am at Tim Bennetts. Eat breakfast and dinner here. Then Gorden carried Lizzie and I to Jo Towlers. Found them well and seemed to be doing well. Then went to Billie Bennetts. They were all well but Sister Nan[n]ie. She looks feeble. Jimmie and Bessie was there and Ella and Elender and Lizzie Bennett come to see us. I was glad that I met with them once more. A good day. I was at Tim Bennetts this morning. Tim and four Negro men went to The Red House to day. Gordon Bennett brought me to Marvins. Lizzie come with me. She went home on the train. I have had a good time with them. Lizzie and Carrie think they have a hard time and they do but it might be worse. They have enough to eat and to wear. I wish they did not have to work so hard and they were more content with their lot. I would give them enough to do some good but I can't help mself or them either. A cloudy morning. Rain this evening and tonight. I come home this morning. Marvin and Carrie and four of the children come with me. I am thankful that he brought me. I found all at home getting on alright. I know that Alma done a lot of work. I had a good trip. Every one was kind to me. I went some where every day on their car. A good day. We all staid at home for dinner. Alma got the dinner. She is a wonder. I think she has kept house for me a week and all of the children like her. Ben and the children went to Jim Powers. Found them well. Mrs. Car was at Mr. Powers. No one come to see us today. Alma spent the evening reading. I am a fraid that Franklin is not well. Henry has gone to George Emersons tonight. Heard today that there was a good rain.

A good morning. Rain this evening. Ben worked on the truck most of the day. He went to Srait Stone for some bolts. He let all of the children go. Jim sowed some turnip seed and got up some potatoes. Alma got most of the dinner. We had snaps and butter beans and corn. The first that we have had this season. Alma made me two aprons this evening and changed Ednas dress. Alma went to Blains this evening to spend the night. I will miss her so much when she goes home and she intends going soon. Franklin has bin complaining all the evening.

A heavy rain last night. Cloudy all day. Rain again tonight. We want it to quit raining now as bad as we wanted it to rain. Jim and Ben and John Ward and Henry worked on the bridge over the branch most of the day. Jim and Henry went to Mount Airy for lumber to make the bridge. They carried a log to Starkeys mill. They got wet before they got home. Alma come from George Blains today. She said that they had commenced on the new school house. Henry tried to milk tonight. I hope he may learn. Edna can milk ok.

A rainy morning. Clear this evening. The men suckered tobacco today. Alma wanted to go home. Ben carried her home. He let me and three children went with him. We found them well at Jims. We stopped at Gretna and bought a few things. We got home in good time. Johnson stopped and looked at the phone. Said he would come in the morning and fix it up. I will miss Alma. She cooked and helped me so good. The children all like Alma. She was so good to them Ben said she fed them good while I was a way. Ben and Henry milked this morning.

A good day. Very warm. The men hauled logs to the saw mill all day. I staid at home today and done the work. I cooked snaps and corn and potatoes. Went to the corn field for snaps. Could not get them. Johnson Reynolds come this morning and fixed the pohn. Mollie come with him. I was glad that she come. It had been so long since she was here. Jim pulled a water mellon this evening. It was not ripe good. Ben gave the children some medicine tonight. I wrote two letters today. One to John. One to Carrie.

A good day most of the day. Had a shower just at night. Ben hauled some logs for him self this morning and helped Norman Booker this evening. Jim spent the day a way from home today for the first time in a long time. He went to see some [parties?] for Lee. He come home ok. I was so glad. Edna and Mabel had company this evening. [E]ula and F[?]l[?]ery Mayhew come to see them. I think they had a fine time. Franklin went to Mr Bookers and staid most of the evening. The paper tolde of the P[?]sadens death. That is a sad ending to his trip.

A good day. Rain tonight. Nellie come home this morning. We were glad to see her. We all staid at home until after dinner. Floid Reynolds come for me to spend the evening with them. Howard Fergerson and family was there and Josie and family come. They had a nice dinner and ice cream. Mabel had all that she wanted. Josie brought us home. Nellie made coffee for supper and washed dishes tonight. Jim had some water mellons today. They were good ripe. Henry went with Floyd off some where this evening. Has not come home yet.

A good day. Very warm. Ben went to the mill. Franklin went with him. They got back by twelve. The rest of them suckered tobacco. One of the [Mary or many] [Candidy?] come to see them today. Nellie cleaned up their room. I got dinner and churned this evening. Three children and I went to Mr Bookers. None of them was at home. We come back. I picked some snaps. Got some vines for the cows. Edna helped me milk. They have had a good time to day. Have some water mellons to day.

A good day. Jim and Ben suckered tobacco until twelve. Then they went to the election. Children and I went to Kates a while. Got a fraid it was going to rain and Oscar Brumfield brought us home. There was the biggest crowd at Renan that I ever saw there on election day. John Ward and Henry plowed some late tobacco. They finished in time for early supper. Ben and Jim has gone to Renan to hear from the election. Nellie boiled some grapes for jellie. I hope she may have good [luck?].

A very hot day. No rain to stop work. There is a cloud rising now. I do hope it wont be very bad. Ben and Jim helped Norman work on his fire boxes this evening. I went to Mr. Bookers this evening. Mrs. Booker was not at home. She was gone to preaching. Mr. Emerson's girls and a Miss Reynolds come here this evening. I was glad that they come to see Edna. We had some nice mellons for them. Nellie made some jellie this morning. There is plenty of grapes now. William Brumfield was at Kate Harvey's yesterday.

A good day. The men suckered tobacco. Nellie picked some grapes and made some grape jelie. I got the most of the dinner. This evening Ben went to Strait Stone. The children and I went with him. We bought some sugar and a few of other things. Heard that Lee was defeated in the elect tion. I am sorry but some one had to be left.

A good day. Very hot. The men suckered tobacco all day. I got dinner started and then went to the garden and gathered tomatoes. Lee and Hildna come a while this morning. They said they were going to preaching at Edge Hill. They had all day preaching and dinner on the ground. Nellie sewed some today. Edna and Franklin went to Mr. George Emersons this evening to play with the Emmerson girls. We are getting plenty of tomatoes now and all other vegetables but no fruit.

A good day a while. Then it rained. The men suckered tobacco a little while this morning. Then they quit work. Ben carried me and the children to White Falls. I caught several fish. Then we eat dinner. By that time it was a bout ready to rain. We started home and got as far as Jim Thomsons. Ben got in a ditch and could not get out with out help. Johnson Reynolds was in the mud two after the rain. Some men come and got them out. The children and I went to Thomson's house. Mrs. Thomson was as nice as could be. I wore one of Mrs Thomson's dresses home. I hope I did not soil it. She was so kind. Nellie got dinner.

A cloudy day. Rain tonight. Jim and Nellie staid here. Nellie got dinner. The children staid at home except Henry. He Went to Sunday school. Ben carried me to Earl Bennetts. Earl had a lot of nice mellons. Lizzie had a good dinner. Tim and Lizzie and Alma and Gordon and family all was at Earls for dinner. Mrs. Anderson and Denia come over there this evening. Earl brought me home tonight. I was sorry to put him to so much trouble but I can't help my self. I hope Earl got home and did not get wet.

A good day. No rain today. The men folks worked on the barns. Jim helped Mr. Booker on his flues. Kate Harvey and Irvin and Bill come a little while. They got some grapes. Nellie caned some tomatoes and gathered some grapes. We staid at home and I have no news. Lelia Ward went to a lodge meeting. Mabel got a letter from Edna to day. I got one from Kitty Reynols. I am glad to hear from any of them. I want to go for Edna tomorrow but the men is so busy I am afraid they wont go. Fraklin and Mabel has bad colds.

I reckon we have lots of water mellons now. I gathered a basket of tomatoes this evening. I think that the children are feeling better today.

A good morning. Rain this evening and so colde that we need fire. Lee went from here this morning and Marvin went with him. I peeled peaches most of the day. Carrie made four gallons of preserves today. Reese gathered the peaches. The first or nearly the first things that I done today was to spill the ink and got some on my book. Marvin got home a few minutes a go. He had not had his dinner. I certainly wish that I could know how the rain was at home. I am a fraid there was hail in the cloud. It has got [se?] cool.

A cloudy day until late. This evening it cleared a way. It has bin colde all day. We have had a fire all day. I peeled a lot of peaches and Carrie preserved them. She caned some tomatoes this evening. Lee Brumfield staid here a gain last night. I was glad for him to be here. The roads was so mudy I was a fraid some thing would happen to him.
I got a letter from Edna this morning. She said that they were all well at home. I am anxious a bout them at home. I want to know how they are getting on.

A good day. Very cool for August. Marvin and Carrie washed this morning. I got dinner. Cooked snaps and potatoes and fried chicken. Carrie churned when she got thru washing. We went to Tim Bennetts this evening. Carrie and all the children and I found them all well. Lonnie Bennett was at home. I was glad to see them all. [C?arley] Harvey and Virginia was here this evening a little while. Marvin had some nice mellons and peaches. They enjoyed them. They got a bucket of snaps. I was glad that they come.

A beautiful day. I am at home tonight. Marvin brought me home this morning. Found them all getting on well. Some of them said that they did not miss me. I milked tonight. Franklin helped me what he could. The men folks are fixing to opossome hunting. Evelyn is going two for the lack of sence. She claims to be not able to work. After this she needs no pitty only because she has no more sence. Mr. Mayhew come up here today and got some mellons. They have a lot of them here now.

Reese carried me to Gretna and to see Jenia Brumfield. She had come to see me. I come back with Reese. Little Christenia and a Miss Angle come with us home. They had water mellon and musk mellon and peaches. All they would eat. Reese carried them home. Carrie sewed some tonight. Finished one of Rays blouses.

A good day. Marvin has worked on tobacco all day. Carrie sewed all the morning. I got dinner. This evening I went to Gretna with Reese. I bought 4 dolls. Two for Carries girls. Two for Bens girls. We had a scare this evening. Eva fell off the runing board of the car and Reese ran partly over her. She was hurt but not very bad. Lizzie and Lonny and [Alma?] come here and brought me a hat. [Alma?] had bin to Danville this morning. John come home last night. I want to see him soon.

A good day. Marvin finished curing his house of tobacco today. Carrie made Franklin two blouses this morning. I got dinner and sewed on some buttons. Today is Paul Smiths birth day. He is eleven years old. They all bathed all the children and put clean clothes on them. Marvin went and gathered a big bucket of snaps for me to take with me home tomorrow if I go. That is what I intend. I want to see them all. I have helped Carrie the best that I could this week. Hope that I may be able to help the rest next week.

Clifton and family was there and Miss Georgie Via Jane Reynols aunt. She is a cripple but she is grand. So cheerful and industrious. She sewed nearly all the time I was there. Clifton come after me and Christenia brought me home. Clifton carried Henry home. At least he went to Tim Bennetts on his way home. I am glad to see Miss Via. I had hear about her. Cloudy most of the day but no rain today. We had the hardest rain and thunder last night that has bin this year. The branch was as high as I ever knowed it to be. The first thing the boys did this morning was to put in the bridge. They moved a curing of tobacco and cut one today. Mr Booker helped them. This evening I went to Mr Bookers. This evening I got some snaps. I gathered some peas and shelled them. I gathered the tomatoes today. Want to can them in the morning.

A day that they could [sic] most of the time. They cut tobacco. Filled a house and a little on another. It is raining tonight. Nellie washed some today. I got dinner and churned. Mabel and I went to barns and to the field where the men was at work. We caught a lot of worms. Looks like they will eat up the tobacco. Mr Bookers hands helped Jim and Ben this evening. The people are so busy that there is not passing a round like [commols to be read common?] Kate Harvey phoned that we could get tomatoes but the boys would not go for them.

Edna held sticks some today. She is two little to do that but they needed her so bad and she wanted to go. Nellie got dinner for me while I wormed tobacco. A good day. They moved and cut tobacco all day. I got dinner. Nellie sewed for the baby. This evening I went to Kate Harveys. Pearl Wiggington was there. They were making Virginia a dress. Thomas Thomson was hurt Sunday in an automobile and is in the hospitle. Ervin finished cutting tobacco today Mollie Reynols come to see us yesterday. I was glad that she come. Mr and Mrs Kent carried me as far as Renan. I was glad of the ride. I spent a pleasant night with Kate. I certainly do hate for to have to leave the place where she is. She is well fixed.

A good day. The men moved some tobacco this morning. This evening Ben made some boards. Jim went to the saw mill. Evylin went to Gretna. Nellie lost all the milk tonight. The bucket handle come out. Edna went to Mr. Bookers and got milk for the baby. I went to George Blains to the missionary meeting. There wa[sic] several of the neighbors there. I was glad to see them. I don't belonge with them. A good day. They finished cutting tobacco.The tobacco that was planted the first of July. Johnson Reynols put some in the barn with them. A good day. Ben worked on his tobacco all day. Jim was making a hog pen. Nellie got dinner. The children and I pulled grass out of the turnip patch. We finished that job. Carrie and the chldren brought Janie home and come to see us a little while. I come home with them. Had a good trip. The road is awful from Gretna to Marvins. Hope they will work it soon before I go home.

A good day. Marvin Smith cut corn. The children went to school. Carrie fixed to wash. Before she commence Mrs McLaulin come to spend the day. She had her little boy with her. He is a fine little fellow. When she went home Carrie and I walked with her nearly home. It is not far but a steep hill to clime. I am very glad that Carrie has her for a neighbor. She seems to be a fine woman. Carrie had snaps and butter beans and sweet potatoes and cake. I have set a round today and rested. Would like to know what they are doing at home.

A good day. I am at Marvins. Carrie washed this morning. I got dinner. I cooked butter beans, baked sweet potatoes, fried chicken,fried apples. This evening after school Reese carried his mother and all of the children and I to Tim Bennetts. Lizzie and Alma had their hands full. They had three of Olas children to take care of. Ola has a new baby born the 19 of Sept. Alma had a very bad colde. I hope she may soon get well. We made the trip o.k. I dreaded the road but Reese drove it alright.

A good day. We all stayed at home except the children. They went to school. Marvin helped Mr. Pickenel cut tobacco and moved some tobacco. Reese carried me to Gretna this morning before he went to school. I bought some gingham. Carrie made me three aprons and a pettie coat. I am proud of them. Some of the children have very bad colds. I helped Carrie what I could today. Gathered some butter beans and shelled them.

A good day. I come home from Marvin Smiths. Carrie and all the children come with me. Kate Harvey come with us home. I was glad to have them come. We found them well and doing well. The boys had built a hog house while I was gone. Lee come here at dinner time. He had bin to dinner. Ben went with him home to help write up the books. They will have to be turned in Monday. Nellie went with Carrie home. She was going to Chatham. I do hope they got home safe. Would be glad to know. The teachers had a teachers meeting today so we had the children at home all day.

A good day. Jim and Henry and John Ward cut corn. Ben helped Lee with his books. Henry has gone up there tonight. Evelin and Edna washed the dishes tonight. Nellie did not come home today. There was an ice cream party at Edge Hill this evening. I worked on the turnip patch some a gain this evening. I sowed some seed on it. Hope to live to see what it will make. I gathered some butter beans this evening. They are getting a few and far between. The children and I got potatoe vines for the cows tonight.

A good day. Ben staid at Lees all day. Henry went up there last night. Edna and Franklin went up there this evening. They went with Reese and Paul Smith. They brought Nellie from Gretna home. Mr. [Sprat?] and his wife and wife's sister come to see Evylin this evening. I went to see Mollie this evening. They had come from Piney Grove. They had not eat dinner. Posey and family and Clack and family was there. Mollie had a good dinner. Snaps and beef and chicken pies and cake. One of the best that I ever did taste. Posie brought me home on his Red Bird car. It did ride fine.

Lelia Ward come this morning and got a chicken. She said she wanted it for their dinner. Heard today that Evylin Hutcherson is sick. Jo Edmons is bad off yet from getting hurt. I hope that they may get well soon. Today is Mabels birth day. She is four years old. I am writing by the light of four little wax candles that I made for her. She is very well except a sore ear.

A good day. Ben plowed until twelve. Jim plowed all day. Ben carried Evylin to Gretna this evening. I went with them. I did not buy much. Money is [true?] scarce. I saw Carrie and Mrs McLaut[ghl?]in and several others that I was glad to see. Nellie has the care of Evylins baby tonight. Evylin will take the train for Lynchburg in the morning. A cool cloudy day. We all staid at home until late this evening. Mrs Car was here at dinner time. Then Ben and three little children went with her home and right back. Henry went to Strait Stone to preaching. Lawson Emerson was here for supper. Henry and Lawson has gone to Strait Stone tonight. I would like to go some times but I can't. There is no time here to go unless it is some where it suits every one. Evylin is gone and Nellie is having a time with the baby. She must not cry a bit if they can help it.

A good day. Some frost this morning. Not enough to kill things. Jim stripped tobacco. John plowed. Ben went to the Island for gu[a]no. Mr Mills worked on the road by here. He worked on it all day in sight of the house. Nellie got a letter from Evylin to day. I have fixed some rowes in the garden and planted some onions. I could of waited and they would of plowed the land for me but I would not wait. I planted them last year and they made the finest that we every made. The men folks are tying tobacco thnight. Preaching is going on at Strait Stone.

She went and tolde him and then went to John Wards. Her dady switched her a little. Made her very mad. I got Ben to work on the cup board to keep out mice. The children went to school. I done the cooking. Nellie has a job attending to Elaine. Mabel says her tooth hurts tonight. I am sorry for her.

A clear day. I was at home and cooked breakfast. Then I dressed and Christenia Reynols come for me on their big car. She carried the children as far as her house. Then they went to school. Then Mrs Owen drove the car as far as Gretna. Then Posie Reynols drove for us. Carried us to Danville. We eat dinner at Howard Fergersons. Julia gave us a good dinner. Than we went to the fair grounds. Saw lots of things. Staid unitl after nine o clock. We got a sand witch an a cup of coffee on the grounds. Then we come to Fergersons and eat a snack and come to Johnson Reynols. None of it cost me any thing. Mollie and Posie was good to me. I want to be thankful.

A good day. I am at Reynols this morning. Christina brough me home this morning. Found them all well. I milked after I come home. I churned and got dinner. Jim stripped tobacco. Henry rolled wheat land a while. Ben shod the horses. Mr. Booker and two children and Miss Louease[?] Booker come this evening. I was glad that they come. Miss Booker played on the piano a little. Ben and the three children went to Rob Hubbands this evening and will stay all night. They carried the dog with then. Ben wanted to go hunting. Henry went to Strait Stone. A rainy morning. Began to rain last night a bout ten oclock and rained most of the night. Ben stopped at Lee Brumfields and staid all night. Went to Gretna today and solde the tobacco. It solde very wel] I think. They got home half past nine tonight.
Jim stripped some tobacco then heard that Mr Ned Walker was sick. He went to see him. Found him a little better off but right sick yet. Ben got Henry a suit of clothes. Nellie got word to come to [Rensenes?] where Evylin is staying.

A good day. The men folks moved some tobacco this morning. This evening Jim graded some. They have gone to tie it up. Tonight Thomas Brumfield come to spend the night. He has gone with them to the barn. Ben carried all the children and I to Mr. Jessie Worsham's pond. I fished. None of the others did not try to catch any thing. I caught 9 fish. One a very nice one. Nellie staid at home with the little baby. She expects to go to Lynchburg in the morning and carrie the baby.

A good day. Thomas Brumfield is here. He come yesterday. Ben carried Nellie and Elain to Gretna this morning. They were going to Lynchburg to meet Evylin and Claud. I do hope that they got on o.k. Lee and Ben and Hugh went to Smiths[sic] Mountain today. Henry went to the baptizing at Camp Branch Bridge. Carrie and all of the children come and Kate come. I was very glad that they come. A cool windy day. Jim stripped tobacco. Ben made two trips to Renan school house. Thomas Brumfield has fixed up the gutters and commenced to paint the roof of the house. Ben had to help him get things so he could work. They was most of the day getting ready. The children went to school. Mabel and I got on fine. Today was my birth day. I am 77 years old. I am well as I could expect. My hip hurts when I try to walk. Mollie is all of the children that said any thing to day about it.

A colde day for Oct. There will be a freeze by morning I am a fraid. Thomas Brumfield went from here this morning on the waggon. The school children went with him. A very good day. Jim and Ben worked on tobacco. I got Ben to go to Renan and pay my taxes. That bothered him some but I am glad that it was done. Henry and John Ward got up the sweet potatoes. We made a good crop. They should of bin got up sooner. I am sure they won't keep. The children has played out doors most of the day. The day has seemed long to me. I have bin busy all day. A good day. Jim and Ben went to Gretna with tobacco. They are very well pleased with the sales. They got off and I did not hear them. I got up about two oclock and made a fire and made coffee. A rainy morning. Cleared up by night. The men stripped tobacco all day. Tonight we all went to the school house to a play. I think the play was fine. I met with several of my children and grand children and friends. They tried to rais funds to pay for the school house. The clock has struck eleven and we all should go to bed.

A cloudy colde day. Ben went for Thomas Brumfield. He painted the roof of the house. Ben helped him some. Ben carried Thomas to Gretna this evening. We paid 12 1/2 dollars to get the house roof painted. Jim graded tobacco. John Ward tied. He brough [sic] several gaskets full of potatoes to the house and put them up. I got dinner and played with Mabel the most of the evening. Edna is at home. I was glad to see her back. Jim and Ben has colds and coughs. I hope they may be well soon.

He had a letter from Kate Harvey. She is visiting Virginia Thomson at Welch W. Va. I was surprised to hear that she was there. Franklin said I must write that Henry caught a hawk in his steel trap this morning. The children are all bathed and want to go to Marvin's tomorrow. I am a fraid the day will be so colde that they cant go.

A good day. Ben and the children and I went to Marvin's. Carrie had a good dinner. Fried chicken and tomatoes and macaronie and chees caned peaches and fruit cake. It was all good and nice. This evening Carrie and I and Henry and Reese went to see my sister Nannie Bennett. She has bin sick and looks bad now but I hope she may soon get well. All of Nannies daughters was there. I was glad to see them. We come by Tims[or Jims?] and talked with them a minutes.[sic] We got home in good time. I got supper. Ben and Henry has gone some where. To St. Andrews I guess.

A good day. The men worked on tobacco all day. Ben went to Altavista and carried some tobacco. It solde low. He was not pleased with the sales. Thomas Callans died this morning from a lick that Will Dickerson hit him. I am very sorry that it happened. This evening after Henry come home from school all the children and I went to Strait Stone dealing. I could not get any land. Little Avis Emerson is staying with Edna to night. Ben has gone to Mayhews tonight. We are bringing all the water from the spring up in the field.

A good day. Jim and Ben stripped tobacco. Finished a cureing and loaded the car ready to start to Gretna in the morning. Thomas Callans was buried today. The children went to school. Edna went to Mr. George Emersons tonight. I think the Emerson girls are fine. Hattie Gilbert stoped here a few minutes today. She looks badly. I hope she may get well soon. Mabel is bad off with colde. I let her get out two much yesterday. I think Mr. Mayhew and the girls has come to play carrums[?]. I guess Ben and Henry are glad.

A good day. We got up early this morning. Ben had gone to Gretna . I was surprised as I had not heard any thing about his starting up so early. Jim and John stripped tobacco all day. Ben come home by eleven oclock. Heard today that Bruce Reynols wife has a son. The Emerson children has a lot of school children with them tonight. Two of the Worsham children one Milam one Brumfield. Henry and Jo Edmons has gone down there to night. Jim sent off an ax helve today. I sent some goods to make Edna[she stopped in midsentence]

A beautiful day. The men stripped tobacco. They are going to load the car tonight. Mabel and I went up to the barn this evening. I could not be any help so we come to the house. Had not bin here long when Millie Reynols come. I was so glad that she come. She brought a few apples. They were very good. The children went to school. Jim and I got a letter from Nellie. They were getting on fine from what she said. We had a foot washing here tonight Mabel Franklin and I. The children has gone to sleep. Mabel is much better of her cold today and I am so glad.

A rainy morning. Ben had his car loaded ready to go to Gretna. Did not go until this evening. He went and come before sundown. He was pleased with the sales. Jim and John stripped tobacco all day. I sewed a little. Cooked three time and washed dishes and churned. I make all sorts of mistakes such as cross the wrong letter. The tobacco that Ben carried off today was mine and Johns. I was very glad to get my part of the advance. Mabel has bin cross part of the day. She is not well. The children went to school. Did not get wet much.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco all day. I got dinner. Then Henry and Franklin and I went to Gretna. We done some shopping. Then went to see Carrie a little while. Found them well enough to be about. I was glad of that. We got home in good time to get water and wood and get supper. Henry drove the car very good I thought. I am so glad that he can drive the car. I hope that nothing wont happen to make me afraid.

A good day. We all staid at home except Henry. He went in [camel?]. some where we don't know where. Carrie and the children come to see us. I was so glad to see them. Carrie helped me get dinner. She said that Marvin was not well. I do hope he may soon be well. They think they have a hard time and they do in some ways but if any thing sould[sic] happen to Marvin serious then they would see a hard time shure[sic]. Jim and Ben caught a squirel this evening and put him in a cage. Will try to tame him.

A clear morning. Cloudy this evening and rain tonight. Ben went to Gretna this evening with tobacco. Got home a while be fore night. Jim and John stripped all day. The children went to school. Mrs. Booker went to Lynch Burg yesterday. Come home this evening. Ray Booker come with Franklin home and staid until his mother got home. I have bin up all day but have not felt good all day. Ben got me a pair of shoes today. I got a card from Hellen Brumfield today wishing me a good Thanks giving day.

A good day. Cleared up last night. The men has shucked corn all day. The tobacco was dry. I had cabbage for dinner. I stewed a pumpkin that Carrie gave me. Think I will make some pies for Thanks Giving dinner. Hattie made soap here today. I hope it will be good. The children went to school. I am a bout a sleep and git[?] and go to bed.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco all day. The children went to the school house. They [sic] school broke up at noon. Some of the teachers li[?]ve a good distance. They went home for Thanks giving day. I dressed a hen for our turkey. Carrie gave me a pumpkin. I have cooked it. Guess they will work here. They can be as thankful at work as they could and not work. Ben and Henry has gone to Mr. Mayhew's to play games. Mabel had a bad cough. I wanted to go to see Kate Hubband this evening but did not get off. Henry come by Renan and got some meat.

A cloudy day and rain this evening and tonight. Jim worked on his tobacco all day. Ben and John Ward and Henry cut and sawed wood this morning and stripped tobacco this evening. John Ward brought two little baskets here this morning. He made them for Carrie Smith. I cooked a hen for dinner and baked pies. Carrie gave me a small pumpkin, all that I have had this fall. We have got the water to drink from the spring up in the field. The Children hate to bring it so far. I hope that they will dig out the branch soon.

A rainy day. Clear tonight. Ben moved the cureing of tobacco that was packed in the house that John Ward lives in. Put it in the barn ready to strip. They stripped what they could today. Mr. Mayhew and two of the children was here tonight. They played games. Mayhew said he heard that Will Dickerson had bin caught. I hope is the truth. They children has had a good time playing with paper dolls. Franklin tryed to tie tobacco. Jim got a letter from his folks. They were well.

A beautiful day. They men stripped tobacco except Henry. Ben has gone some where tonight. I hope his car did not give him trouble. We think the children has [deletion] chicken pox. It is not hurting them much yet. Ben got a letter from Kate Harvey today. She is at Welch yet. I would be so glad to see her. Alma sent the baby dresses by mail today. They fit he[r] nicely and are very pretty. She wore one of them to the barn for her father to see. Well it is eleven oclock . I think I will go to bed.

A good day. We all was at home for dinner. Then Henry and I went to Johnson Reynols. They were not at home. Then we went to Clack Hubbands. I was glad to go. I had wanted to go for some time. They seemed to be getting on fine. They have a fine little baby. He is not named yet. Mr. Booker come while I was gone. I would of liked to see her. Think I will go to see her soon. I am so glad that Henry can run the car.

A good day. Ben and Jim got up this morning at 4 o'clock loaded the car. Henry and Ben loaded Ben's car and Mr. Booker and Jim loaded Mr. Bookers. They eat breakfast and started to Gretna. They went and unloaded and was back by nine o'clock. Loaded and went back by twelve o'clock. Ben got home by ten[?]. They are stripping on Jims last cureing. I talked with Effie B. this evening. She has bin to Black Burg. She said that Willie B[a?]rns was sick. I am so sorry. Hope se may get well soon. Mabel and [I] went to Mr. Bookers.

A clear morning. Rain this evening. They men stripped tobacco all day. The children went to school. I was sorry for them coming home through the rain. I have spent what time I was not cooking or washing dishes mending the children's clothes. Henry and I was going on a trip to see if we could find some body that had butter to sell. The rain prevented. Mabel has bin very good today. Played with her paper dolls. She is a lot of trouble to look after but a sweet childe. I am glad that she is here.

A very bad day. Rained all last night and most of to day. Edna and Franklin staid at home. Henry went to school. Jim and Ben stripped tobacco. They want to kill hogs but can't. The weather is so bad. I killed a chicken for dinner. I wrote two letters. Got no litters today. Don't know any thing to write this time.

A windy bad day. Jim finished stripping tobacco. This evening John Ward went to Strait Stone. Went on the wagon and carried his family. Mr. Booker come and got the scalding tub fixing to kill hogs. Henry come home to go to Strait Stone but I would not go because it was colde and windy. Mabel has bin very good today. Ben is not feeling well today. I am so sorry for him and can't do any thing to help him.

A good day. Jim and Ben and Norman Booker killed hogs. They killed 7 hogs. Lots of others killed today. It is most two warm but I hope that it will keep. Mabel and I eat dinner here today by our selves. The men folks eat at Mr. Bookers. Mrs. Booker had help and I have none. I took the fat off the entrails by my self. We did not get any mail today except the news.

A beautiful day. Warm for December. We have worked on the cleaning up after hog killing. Lelia ward and I cut up the lard and sausage. I dried up the lard. Ben and Jim ground the sausage. I seasoned it. Ben made little bags and Edna and Ben filled the sacks. Ben washed off the table and washed the dished[?]. Henry and Franklin went to the mill at Cedar Forest. Got some corn meal. John Ward washed the chidlins and cleaned the faces and feet and that was a great help. Ben helped me get supper. I was glad.

A beautiful day. Jim and Henry and Franklin and I went to Marvin's today. Found them fixing to come to see us. Carrie gave me a nice cake for Xmas and some butter. I was glad of all that she gave me. She gave us a good dinner. Ben and the little girls staid here. Ben got dinner. I think they enjoyed getting their own dinner. We stoped at Mr. Rowland's and got some oil. The got on fine.

A very warm day for December. Ben went to Gretna and got back before light. I did not know that he was gone until he got home. He eat breakfast and loaded and went back. He went to Danville today. He has just come home 8 o'clock at night. Jim went with him to Gretna. He solde his last tobacco today. He come home with Ren Worsham and Emmet Craddock. I was glad when he come home. He brought the children some apples and the baby a rubber camel. I fried meat and sausage and caned it. Hope it will keep. Made scraple. I have hardly set down today. Do hope it may get colde by morning.

A very warm day for December The [wen?] cut wood. for fine wood all day. The children went to school. I done all day what I could and noone could tell any thing had bin done.
Mollie & [Dessia?] come to see me I was very glad that they come it had bin a long time since [Dessia?] had bin to see us. She said she thought that Isla was feeling better than she had Mollie said that Bruces wife was in the Hospitle she had a tumor removed I hope she may get well soon

A beautiful day. The men cut wood in the woods and Ben hauled. They put some tobacco in the pit. The children went to school. I got a card announcing the birth of Virginia Thomson's baby. I have bin very busy today. I boiled meat and made scrapple. I brought some water, cleaned out the range, buried my pech seed. I could not get any way to plant them like I wanted to. Hope I may live and plant them. I want them to do some body some good. They were fine peaches. They come from Marvin's.

A cloudy day. No rain to stop work. Ben hauled wood all the morning. Jim graded tobacco. They all worked on tobacco this evening. The children went to school. Henry went to Gretna to play basket ball. He has not got home yet. Ben worked on his chairs last night and is at work on them tonight. I will be glad when he gets them finished. Mabel and I have staid in the kitchen most of the day. I cooking and washing dishes. She cutting out paper dolls and coloring them with her pencils. Cutting paper is her daily work. Bless her little soul.

The ground was covered with snow this morning. The first of real winter we have had. They stripped tobacco most of the day. A load of tobacco passed here this morning through the snow. They seemed to be making it fine. The children went to school. I think some of them has a colde from going in the snow. Henry got home last night some where a bout midnight. Said he eat supper at Aunt Caries. Said Reese fell and hurt his arms. I hope he may soon be well. Ben went to Mr. Allen's this evening. Will Allen and his wife moved to their selves to day.

A clear cold day. Jim started to Lynchburg to see his wife and daughter. I hope he may find them well and doing well. Henry drove the car to Gretna. Ben sawed some wood. Mr. Booker helped John Ward and Henry. They got what Ben had hauled. Mr. Booker eat dinner with us. I cooked hog chidlins. I was a shamed of it as Mr. Booker was here. Hope he did not find it out[?]. I have bin chilly and sick some this evening. Mrs. Booker sent me some butter by Ray this evening. I was very glad of it. Henry has gone to Mr. Mayhew's.

A good day. Ben fixed heater in the dineing room. Henry went to Lee Brumfield's a little while tonight. He said he was going to Strait Stone. Edna and Mabel has the chicken pox. The baby has bin cross all day. I have bin most sick all day. Lelia come and washed dishes this morning. I made out to get dinner. Mr. Sam Owen come here this evening. Wanted Ben to go and see if he could do any thing for his car. Ben has not come back yet. Hope he can fix the car so he can run it. We miss Jim very much.

A beautiful day. Ben went to Gretna with tobacco. He staid about all day. We thought Jim would come home with him but he did not. I hope that there has not any thing happened to him. The had has bin a long one to me. Mabel and I here by our selves. She is broke out with chicken pox. Did not rest good last night. I do hope that she may sleep tonight. I had a card from Floyed and a letter from Alma. I am always glad to hear form any of them. Ben had his teeth worked on today. They are giving him trouble to night.

A fine day. The boys shucked corn the most of they day. Hauled up one load. Oscar Brumfield com to see Ben a bout sawing their wood. Lee come for the saw. The horses got to the corn pile and eat a lot. I hope it won't hurt them. The children went to school. They had a game played against the Gretna boys. Renan beat. I got a new year book today from Lynchburg. Will and Effie sent it. It is very nice. I got a card from Ervin Harvey and Mrs. Kent. I am glad to be remembered.

A rainy morning. The men folks did not do any thing of any account until evening. They picked up some corn and put it in sacks. The children went to school. There is a play over there tonight. Ben and the children has gone all but Mabel. She is a bed and a sleep. Edna eat supper at John Hutcherson's tonight. [E]Ula Mayhew and Gladis Owen was there two. I wrote to Kate Harvey. Wrote part of one to Carrie Smith. Nat passed so early that I did not get it in the mail. Jim sent a box of turnip greens to Ruben's today.

A very warm day for Dec. They cut some feed at Booker's and here. Did not finish. I got dinner. Though[t?] Mr. Booker would be here. He did not stay. After dinner Henry and I went to Gretna. I bought a pair of shoes and stockens. Come home and put them on. Ben and Jim went to Mt. Airy. Ben bought some paint. Henry and I come by by Marvin's and got some cakes that Carrie had made for me. Marvin's folks was going to a play at the school house. A part of the school building was burned last night.

A good day. Very warm for December. The men hauled some stalks and cut some feed for Mr. Booker. The children went to school for the last time this year. This evening Henry went to Mt. Airy and played ball and got beat. Come home so mad that he cried. Then he went to Strait Stone to meeting at the church. He has not got back yet I don't think. Mr. Mayhew and some of the children come tonight to play games. They seam to enjoy them. I am glad for them to come. Ben and his children like to play.

A warm cloudy day. We all staid at home. We had a nice mess of turnip greens and did enjoy them. This evening Mrs. Booker and Ray come. Alma and Lonnie Bennett come. Alma brough[t] me a fruit cake and a box of candy and two pounds of butter. I am so glad of all of the things. We did not have any butter for several days. That is so little that we did not want to eat it. I am so glad to be remembered by the children. Wish I could see them all once more.

A good day. Ben and the children and Jim went to Strait Stone this morning. Jim and Ben and Henry went to Renan tonight. I boiled a ham and dressed two chickens this morning. Ben swept the parlor and hall today. I got a cake and several packages in the mail and the children got several things. I am so glad to be remembered. Every one is so good to me. Jim gave me a pitcher. Aluminum. Very nice. I am invited to Ben Easts to dinner tomorrow. Guess I won't go. Would like to go but some one will have to stay here.

A good day. The children had a good time with their dolls and toys. Ben gave me a nice bowl for a Xmas gift. Ben and the children went to Jim Powers today. I am sorry that it has turned colde on account of the children but hope that they may get home ok. Jim and I eat dinner and then we went to Mr. Booker's or near enough to see that they were not at home. I went to George Blains. They had all of their children and grand children and sons in laws and daughter in laws there for dinner. Mrs. Bar[k or b?]er and Mr. ??lleent and Mrs. Collen? ana [or and] H[or 4] okens come this evening.

A good day. Jim and I staid home last night. Ben and the children was at Jim Powers. They went to Role Hubband's and spent the day today. Come home late this evening. Irvin Harvey come to see us a while this evening. I went with him to Johnson Reynols'. No one was at home. Then we went to Lee Brumfield's. No one was at home but Oscar. Then we come to Norman Booker. Lee and Grace Otho and Sallie Odie and Lottie Jim Booker and Julia was all at Normans. I spent the evening very pleasantly at Norman's. Jim wants (deleted) Henry went to Strait Stone with Jo Edmons. He is at home now.

A rainy day. Jim went from here this morning. He was going to see his people at Lynchburg. I have felt all day like something serious was the matter. I can't tell why. Jim went with the Edmons boys to Gretna. Ben's car is so out of fix that it won't go like he would like. Floid Reynols was here a few minute to day. He said that Julia Fergeson's baby was very sick. Reubin and his mother was going to Danville this evening to see the baby. I hope it is better by now. I got a nice box of candy from Clifton and Jane today. I have got more nice presents and cards this Xmas than I ever did be fore at Xmas. Ben is at work on a picture frame to night.

A good day. We have bin at home all day except Henry. Marvin and Carrie and all the children come this morning. I was glad to see them. All of them staid all night except Reese. Henry went with Reese home to feed and milk. Ben and Marvin went to Mr. Mayhew's tonight and have not come home yet. 10:30 o'clock. All the rest has gone to bed except myself and I will be in bed soon if nothing happens to stop me. Heard today that Caroline Fergerson was better. Reese and Henry went to Ren Worsham's a little while this evening.

A beautiful day. Carrie and her family went home this evening. They went to Ren's this evening. There was no one at home so they went home. Henry and the other children went with them to Worsham's. Then we went to Ernest's and staid a while. Then went to Reynol's. Mrs. Reynols had not come home from Danville yet so we come home. Ben worked on a picture frame all the evening and tonight. We certainly did enjoy their visit. Carrie['s] children and Bens can have a good time playing together.

Cloudy all day. No rain yet. All the children and I went to Mag Brumfield's and spent the day. Mag had a nice dinner. Had the first turkey that I seen this Xmas. Ben staid at home all day. Mrs. Kellie was at Mag's. 11:30 o'clock Sunday night. Lee and Grace and Elsie East and two children and Hugh Brumfield come and have just gone. I was glad that they come. I enjoyed their company ever so much. Hildah staid with Edna tonight. Henry and Christenia Reynols and Doris Brumfield and Jamie and Delma Owen went to Ren Worsham's. None of them were at home.

A cloudy day rain this evening and tonight. Lightning and thunder tonight. We all have bin at home all day. Ben cut the aspen that I wanted him to. The children carried most of the brush out for me. I washed some few things this morning. I had rain water to use. Hilda is here yet it was so bad she could not go home. They all have tried their [best]. Seven today had to stay in the house most of the time. Henry & Ben are at the dineing room tonight studying [puzzles?]. The last [entry]for this year. Mabel says she is glad Hilda did not go home.
